My opinion: State of the game
MarkyX
SUPER DUPER EDIT: I added my Anet below
Warning: If you dislike people whose opinion's are different then yours, leave now before your virgin eyes become violated.
That being said, I've been a long time advocate and fan of Guild Wars. The idea of private areas, mixing classes, unlocking skills, and not relying on items really made this veteran RP player interested in this game.
Fast forward to the present, Arena.net has been bombared by the vocal minority with insults, threats, suggestions, and praises. Some of these suggestions have been taken with a grain of salt, while the very few actually made it into the game.
Now we face two current problem: End game, or lack of it. In other words, the PvP aspect and what on earth is Arena.net doing about it. The second problem is the community.
Let's get started with the community first, shall we? There has been some talk lately about some of the major guilds leaving like Sissy Boys and Blood Eagle. To them, I say...so what?
Yes yes, you guys are very good at the game and spend lots of time coming up with new strategies and exploits to own the Hall of Heroes and GvG. It's great that you have some wonderful ideas that may or may not benefit the community...
But when I saw the rebuttal to Arena.net from the 'big name' guilds, and a list of people leaving, I laughed. I laughed because they thinkt the community and Arena.net should ***edited*** and cater their demands due to their amazing 'talent'. It's almost that they expected the entire game to crumble and everyone to repent their sins and say "ARENA HAVE OFFENDED THEE GODS. REPENT REPENT!"
Please, if you guys leave, you know what will happen? Few weeks later, someone won't notice you disappear and another guild will take your place. They might not be better than you, but at least they won't be babies who leave when things don't go their way.
I'm not done yet though. Tombs has gone the toilet. A place that was once where unique and strange buidls took place to own everyone else, is now filled with only three builds: Smite, Spirits, and Spike. Notice that they are all start with S. You know what else starts with S? *&%$.
The funny part is that these builds aren't that great or can be countered easily (except spirits). Yet despite that these builds are poopy, people use them. Is this the best the community can offer ? Hundreds of skills where you can mix and match classes and the ony thing you can come up with is three team builds?
How do you people manage to breathe properly?
For the record, I have won the HOH several times using a random PUG group on the American servers, using NO smite, spirit spamming, or air spikes. We didn't hold it for more then three rounds, but RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO we faced spirit groups and smite groups, yet we still owned.
What really annoys me is that the community doesn't respect people with different builds. I have a necro/mesmer that I can use to make an anti-tank dude (who can still be used on other classes, somewhat) yet everyone expects me to bring Tainted Flesh and putrid. Another build I use with my Necro/mesmer is cursing and enchantment stripping. Why go for an air spike when those two warriors could enjoy my Rigor Mortis or Defile Flesh more?
There is more to the game than using an overrated smiting skills and spamming spirits...
Speaking of which, my main character is a ranger. How on earth do you guys find it entertaining to spam spirits and fire oath shot all day?
NEW PART OF THE RANT
Moving on, we will now gaze our thoughts to the mighty militant empire where the elders control the peons to do their bidding. No, not the Bush Administration, but Arena.net
Joking somewhat aside, it seems Anet has lost touch with the common player. Despite that PvP is broken, Hall of Heroes is down the crappy, community can only come up with their builds, they instead use their resources to build a PvE area.
I know some of you are saying "Well they are doing it FOR FREEEEEEEEEE. RESPECT THEM."
One of Anets hype marketing tools was how the entire game was streaming, that you didn't need to download new content, and bugs can be fixed pronto.
I paid for that. So in a sense, the area isn't free. It's generous, but it shouldn't be their first priority when there is many bugs to fix.
I'm a highly competitive PvP gamer. I play Battlefield 2, Quake 3 (still), Neverwinter Nights, NFL 2005, and Fifa 2005. I'm a guy, so anything involving violence and a scorechart interests me.
My beef with Anet is that they can easily fix the PvP problems, but instead waddle to do "brand the boss" contest and some explorable area that will take ten minutes for the players go through like bloodhounds on a sunday foggy morning.
For starters, the whole spirit thing. Why oh why did they allow this even THROUGH the beta? I used to do beta testing for Tactical Ops, an Unreal Tournament mod that got published and even landed the programmer of the said mod to move from France all the way to New York to work on Unreal Tournament 2005. One thing that I learned from my experience working for this big-time mod was that if a bug was found, it would be fixed as soon as possible.
So why did spirit spamming make it through? Does Anet like the idea of people's computers chugging while some lame guild is blocking the hero?
I can give an easy solution right now: Whenever another spirit of the same type is casted within the radius of another spirit, the old one dies instantly. This includes the other team.
The big reason for this is because spirits are bascailly the global enchantments, thus there should only be a certaint type.
This doesn't mean you cannot use all 6 spirits, but no two fertile seasons can be together. This eliminates the use of spirit walls but doesn't destroy the use of spirits.
The sad part is that this will probably take a day to do.
Smite groups don't really need to be changed. Smite groups are easy to defeat...just get an enchantment stripper or nature's renewel and they are good as dead.
Faction is yet another interesting tidbit they added recently. I like it, however I think the prices are way too high for it to be useful.
I say we cut the faction price in half. When you PvP for several hours just to get a skill or two, it just isn't worth it.
I know some of you are thinking "But it would be too fast"...do you know how much crap there is to unlock? The runes? The skills? The items? It would take forever to unlock everything by using faction. I have no interest in playing PvE anymore, so why should I be forced to play it again just to be competitive?
If more skills are unlocked, the more variety the community is allowed to use for their builds. One of the reasons why the big three builds are so popular isn't just because they are pretty powerful (if the other team is stupid), but because they are EASY TO SETUP. While we are at it, why not put a trainer in the PvP areas so we can actually use those skill points in our PvP characters?
By allowing more skills to be unlocked at a faster rate, players may be more open to different builds and trying them out. Problem is, Anet seems to love the concept that the big reason why people play their game is so they can grind for endless hours looking for that one rune or that elite.
Let me tell you a little hidden secret Anet: It's not the unlocking or the lack of equipment importence that made the majority of players get into Guild Wars. It's that with your skill system, we are allowed to experiment and create our own unique builds. Builds that we can create ourselves and use against other people in a game of egos and points. When I use my axe warrior, it is MY axe warrior, not "a axe warrior". When I use him in tombs or arena, people call me a cheater or invite me to their guild. I like him because I created his sweet metal ass using my knowledge of the game and the tools available to me. He rocks more than Rolling Stones.
Go to tombs today and try to form a group. It's almost like you are shopping in Walmart right now with people spamming their products: Necro tainted, axe warrior, KD/AS, prot, heal, smite, and air (congrats community, I just listed all the builds in PvP). You might as well put up a sign in tombs saying "Smiter clearance sell, half off! Get em before we nerf em!" Hell, you have the streaming technology for it. Use it for something else besides a frog.
Whatever happened to the early days where people would try something unique and wierd in tombs, or just form up with a random group? Forming a group now is like waiting at the doctor's office: Thirty minutes to an hour of nothing. This is pretty much why I sometimes leave for either random arenas or Battlefield 2. Quick and painless, kind of like office sex.
Anet, you could have a real gem on your hand. I played in your beta and was hoping the game would be somewhat similar. It seems to me that you totally rushed it, because this is not the same thing I played in the BWE. You said that time spent in the game woudln't make you a better player, yet people spend endless hours unlock runes or skills. You said that there would be no grinding, yet that seems to be the only way to get invited into a tomb group for a 5 minute battle. You also pounded your chest over your streaming technology, but the only thing you've managed to do is put up a frog in Lion's arch. Whatever happened to the raining gnomes and fireworks at the end of your betas?
Anet, you rely on the community for your business. You need people to buy your expansions to get some profit. It's time you start thinking about salvaging your reputation here and start listening to people. We might be the vocal minority, but we are the ones that buy your guide books and expansions in the end.
Warning: If you dislike people whose opinion's are different then yours, leave now before your virgin eyes become violated.

I have to agree, the one think i do not like is the community, most people seems childish and greedy, however i do my best to ignore them... its quite a hard task though
As for the builds, personaly im sick of seing everyone flock to one kind of build, totaly takes the fun out of everything, the box said this game was supost to be about skill, but people using the same skills over and over completely takes away that aspect
aside from that this kinda just sounds like an everyday rant..
PS: Sissy Boys left? when did this happen?... and who is Blood Eagle?

I have never heard of, nor care anything about "the uber best godamndest badass guild of the world".
I simply play the game, and continue to assimilate a badass assortment of players into my own guild.
Go on, leave you sissy boys, never heard of you, won't miss ya.

Is "State of the Game" the new secret word for "Rant Thread"?

Actually i agree with damn there everything this guy/girl/vulture has said.

Another moronic thread whining about people whining, and also whining about how noone likes your builds and don't want you on your team. Boohoo, people play what works, and if some skills are overpowered and others are trash, what's people going to use?
So, you rant about the guilds leaving the game due to issues, and how you don't care, and then you turn around to bring up some of the issues the serious PvPers you don't care about if they leave have been complaining about, smiters and spirit spam (not spike), in an effort to make the game more diverse and balanced. Of course, according to you they can all leave and let people keep exploiting broken skills, while clueless noobs have no idea why things are broken.
You're a hypocrite, this thread is stupid, and I'm tired of people like you. If YOU go away, noone will care. No, actually, they will be glad to see you gone.

You used "suck their dick" (real quote) as an argument. Case closed.
If you are happy that people are leaving a game they invested in and used to like - then you have some serious problems.
Also, anyone who plays a game for over 200 hours a month is the true "sucking dick" person. The majority have a life. The majority don't want to spend 6 months grinding for full unlock.
You're foulmouthing people who took a stand for faster unlocking and imbalance fixed and left having realized that ANet doesn't listen.
The Top guilds were the first ones to discover the Smite and Spirit imbalances and report them. Their Alpha members reported directly to ANet, and there were community posts. These people vere valuable to any balancing efforts and now they are gone.
Your opinion was noted and ignored. Join the long line of assholes that advocate for grind.
P.S. Wipe the brown off your nose.
P.P.S. This thread should be deleted. It has no purpose but to flame and flamebait.

Overall I agree with the OP, even got a laugh out of it (because it's the truth, not because I think it's poorly written bs, quite the opposite).
Honestly, I remember guilds like Sissy Boys and the lot that used to hold the HoH very frequently, other guilds as well. Then I read threads like "Oh Anet shouldn't have booted us out of alpha or ignored our opinions we're the top PvP players!" Yeah, you and hundreds of other guilds who've won the HoH. I see new guilds win the HoH everyday, I've won the HoH a few times with just PUG, a few with my guilds, etc. It's not really a big deal, in fact winning the HoH isn't a gigantic show of talent anyway, I mean hell there's so much bullshit on the way to and in the hall itself that sometimes no matter your talent you won't be able to win.
I don't care if some of the top PvP players leave, in a week or two new "top PvP players" will show up, some even better than the old. The game grows (and shrinks) every day.
As a whole, the original poster's got some good points, there's an aweful lot of bs goin' around.

Sissy Boys was at the air spike times. They left at same time rangers spirit builds came out. Strange isn't it?

I've yet to see the quote where the guild leader and/or representative of Sissy Boys have said what the OP and others claim. What were the exact words?
Know the S word for unsupported accusations? Thats right:

Honestly though, everyone knows that no group of people in this game is without a group out there just as good, or better than them. It's the way things work, if one group WAS better than all the others, they would win every single time, the fact that all guilds (even the "top" guilds) lose like everyone else does at times, shows that there are already groups just as good as them. Don't make things up? I'm not making them up, you can't argue that their won't be better groups anymore than I can argue there will be better groups, I can only say that...well, it's already happening, and it's happened in every single online RPG I've ever played. Another question that comes to mind is...why the hell does it matter? So what if the top players at the present time leave, it's just text on a screen that supposedly makes them "better", but everyone loses, and nobody and no build is "best" in this game. Which is why it's fair to say that new players and guilds can, and will replace the ones lost.

You know, rant threads are really entertaining. They make the original poster look like he's bending over to put both feet in his/her mouth, while the rest of the community lines up behind them for a real good.....flaming.
What bugs me about the usual "Complaint" threads is just that. There is no offering of a potential solution to the grievances. It doesn't benefit the forum community to just say something like "blahblahblah UW Soloing builds blahblah Nerfed Farming drops blahblah Traders blahblah [insert chip-on-shoulder here] blahblah is so unfair. How about a few more "Wouldn't it be a good idea if Anet did [insert potential solution here] in order to fix [insert grievance here]?" postse?

Well it is true that GW community just cant shut up with their complaints, they all yell for a update and then once its there everyone screams how it sux.
Anyone to the builds, those 3 build are common and used because u can find a group that way in 5 minutes. As for the pet Build and Necro build it takes 2 hours to get a team together.
And for those who say some of the big guild left, go to guildwars.com and look at the ladder or get a rank +100 guild because you can meet Sissy Boys and War Machine all the time Playing GvG, I just met them last night.

I can understand the OP's frustration, however, he would have made a better impression if he cleaned up his grammer. Simply cussing to get your point across weakens your postition.
You want people to play nice? Then one must lead by example. Same for trying to get the game developers attention. Taking the time to make your point in a more professional manner will get better results.
I have met some new people lately in PUGs. We have traded. I always treat people with respect. I traded some decent weapons and other items to some of these new people I have met and I sold them at a song. They were very appreciative. They needed the stuff. They were not scamming me just to resell it. Why do I know this? Because later on they would whisper me with things they thought I might need and they wanted to repay my kindness.
If you go on the 250 People rule (Dale Carnagie, Reaching ONE person will inevitably reach 250 other people) you will be amazed at the response from people that you do not really know that well. They will remember you and your fairness/kindness/honorablity and so forth. Of course there will be immature people. There is no real way around this, except at some point in their lives they WILL grow up and see the light. Why do I know this? Because I was a little stoopid selfish jerk at a point in my life. Responsiblity really helped cure it for me.
All in all there are good people out there. Make it a "Quest" to find some of them. I firmly believe that Arena-Net/NCsoft is made up of good people. They really TRY to make this game fun for all. However, there is no way to make everyone happy. So count your blessings at what makes you happy in this game(or anything else for that matter) and run with it.
Remember, Misery LOVES company. So when one pisses and moans they will find others will gravitate toward them.

So Guild Wars is finally getting stuck in the mire that I said that it would months before it was released but no one would believe the few of us detractors.

Updated the post with my rant towards Anet.
I've talked to the recruiter of Sissy Boys, The Roflcopter, and he said that most of them play BF2 now.
Hell, they have their own server and I played against them. They could use some practice.
It's a common thing on the internet. Someone says "OMG I am leaving this forum/game", disappear, and people move on like nothing happened.
The gripe I have is that many top guilds seem to think that they are ambassaders for the community. Sorry, but they don't speak for me. Never will.
I'm glad that they want changes, but there is a difference between 'suggesting' and demanding. What some of these guilds are doing is saying "Better give into our demands, or we leave the game. EVERYONE LOVES US, SO THEY WILL LISTEN TO US"
As I said already, they don't speak for me. And I couldn't care less if they leave. In fact, if a guild is so arrogant as to think they any clout because they happen to have a Vent/TS server up and have a good record, maybe it's best that they leave.
Fine line between being helpful and being selfish. And I don't agree with unlocking all skills in the game for PvP.
I'm just showing an example that it is possible to win without using those three builds. Another guild that I respect greatly is Nuclear Launched Detected, that didn't also use spirit spamming, smite, and spikes, won HOH several times.

I agree with the opinion that the good guilds won't be replaced.
Take a look at KOR. They left a while ago, and there aren't any guilds that are even near their level of skill.

Most of this thread is bs, people jsut talking without knowing. Sissy boys havent or is going leave anytime soon, we however have stop pvping because we dont want to play the healing ball spirit build that is not us! We have alot more fun just gvging. Btw sissy boys is not an alpha guild or has any privilages over anyone here, we are just like any of you, before this game we dint even had a guild.
Btw let me reply my feelings on the KOR thing. War machine has always been better that KOR since day one, they had rule the ladder and beat KOR many times. Their level of skill was never that high, they had a year of practice that most of us disnt have. Today the level of skill on gvg is much higer than what it was when the game started, you got guilds that are leading the ladder not because they were alpha players but because they are good.

Oh God. My poor, poor virgin eyes.
Look, everyone seems to treat this game like it should be absolutely perfect and should be hands down the best choice for an MMO out there. IT IS A FREE MMO. IT IS NOT GOING TO BE PERFECT. Although I do think it is pretty damn good game, and I'll say it again, it's not going to be perfect. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but if you don't like it I really don't care. Nobody does. You whiners need to get it into your head that we don't. I'm sorry about this being a little bit of a rude post but I'm really sick of seeing half the threads on these forums being whines, and I just had to let this out. ^_^

Then the other half is people who whine about others whining, which is just dumb.

It would appear some of you guys have Sissy boys confused with other guilds. While some of us are indeed annoyed with several issues (spirit spam/heal ball making HoH incredibly dumb, overpowered natures renewal, long waits to find GvG matches, ect.), we are not one of the guilds continuously posting on forums like TGH threatening to leave all the time. I think the guild you're thinking of is Nuclear Launch Detected, or more specifically, Kunt0r, one of their members (of course, Nu is far from the only guild with players posting similar statements).
Not only are we still here, but we are better than we've ever been. Just yesterday, we reclaimed the number one spot on the official guild ladder. The fact that people don't see us around nearly as much anymore is due to a number of reasons, none of which involve us having quit. We're often playing as one of our secondary guilds for things like build testing, screwing around, and being able to actually find a match. Another big reason we seem to have disappeared is because we almost never tombs as a guild group anymore so people don't see our name flashed across the server for HoH wins. For us, tombs just isn't fun anymore. In addition to ganking, tombs is just full of healing balls/spirit spam builds that sap so much fun out of the game. But don't think that it is an issue of us not being able to defeat those builds that keeps us out. Quite the opposite, we take those builds out back behind the shed and beat the crap out of them. So I must say, it was quite satisfying yesterday when we got #1 back since the guild we defeated in GvG that put us there was none other than the current kings of the HoH holding build, marvel superheroes.

I really don't want this to become which guild is better than which guild... but I just want to say one thing in response to austin...
KOR is a fairly large guild, which means their 8 best players aren't always playing, or playing with each other. Their 8 players, from the BWE's, are insanely good.
That is all.

Some of us(like me) still do tombs....but we all hope Anet will do something about the lame spirit builds that make you stay in one map for like 30~60 minutes without killing anybody and making HoH a game of killing non players but spirits...and if you get to 1v1 and a spirit build is holding it its imposilbe to take it giving the other team absolutelly no opportunity to win.
Until Anet fix the spirits i don't think we are gonna go tombs with a full sB team again because is boring.
And we are not gods that they have to do what we want like you say...we just play what is fun for us to play just like everybody else.
What i do about this is just not playing with lame spirit spammers guilds like superheroes and not talking to spammers that are makig this lovely game boring.

Let me give you a quick breakdown: funny enough on its own, this is a hidden insult. disliking people is legal. disliking ideas is democratic. insulting people you dislike is neither. Next time just start your threads with "1. I am always right. 2. If you think I'm wrong, see #1". Sounds promising. ANet was 'bombared'? Beautiful. ANet's private forums are doing fine I think, constructive and safe. My roof is being 'bombared' by rain. Woo hoo. The what? How can a Minority 'bombared' anything? Misleading. The first two on your list result in forum bans and closed threads (except this one). The latter are always welcome. I read, most of what this 'vocal minority' is 'bombared'ing ANet with is being ignored. Situation Normal? End-game. You stop playing untill an expansion/ extra content comes out - or you repeat content - or you try PvP. According to ANet PvP is mostly fine and balanced, and all that is needed is Observer Mode and further bug fixes. All the key problems outlined by the 'vocal minority' are not considered serious by ANet according to their public statements. I read this as a selfish insult to the members of the 'major guilds', who are also people, and have an equal right to enjoy GuildWars and get what they were promised. They weren't bad people. They contributed to the community as alpha members and bug reporters. Whatever the reason - people leaving is never something to be happy about. Besides... "Of the dead speak well or not at all." "Exploits to Own" sounds more like 'n00btalk' then something a veteran would say. The top guilds spend lots of time coming up with new strategies to win and have fun. When they find an obvious exploit, they are also the first to report it. You see, only the n00b wants 'ownage', the true pro gamer wants a 'victory through struggle'. The outcome alone doesn't matter if the process is boring. We are not worthy of your wisdom! Oh All-knowing-one, please enlighten us poor souls with your finite judgement of what 'may or may not benefit the community...' That was a great accomblishment. You deserve a Medal...and a statue! This is your masterpiece, the apex of the rant. Good job. You really showed them. Bam. I bet you had a nerdgasm typing that. Red Alert. Enemy Shields Down. Launch CAPS LOCK torpedoes, full spread. Speak to us oh prophet! May the foam coming from your mouth quench our thirst for enlightenment! Knowing when to stop is an elite you should unlock. (Me too perhaps, but this is fun). Stupid? Spammer? Senile? Suckup? Sucker? Many are the S words. Reposte. Umm, remember that 'vocal minority' you 'bombared'? They were pointing out that without faster unlocking, people have less incentive of experimenting when known working builds are around... Tao Te Ching works best for me, though this reply shows I don't follow it well. How about you? Our Majesty the All-Knowing Prophet of Uber Enlightment has decided to resort to the 'I own' clause to support his case. Thrilling. First you bash the people that promted build diversity and faster unlocking... and then you complain about people being uneducated about alternative builds? Hypocrisy prevails. Somewhere deep behind the walls of skillgrind and imbalance there might actualy be a good counter for both. True that. Many ignorant posts to counter. One life to live. This was fun. But I should stop. Have fun folks! P.S. Pardon the cursing in the quotes. I feel your pain. |
[We didn't leave but exactly, the most of us quited tombs....making spiking teams(of any type) or smitting teams or fight against them was really fun because the battles only lasts few minutes and them required lot of skills, hability in the game. The spirits builds made so much boring that it was no more fun so the most of us just do GvG now...not more in sB cuz with sB we can't find opponents before 20~40 minutes. We create other guilds and fight there like Bravo Squad, Sparkling bubbles, etc.
