About half the vent servers I go to have extreme lag. My ping will go to like 27k and then my/everyone elses voices will cut out every few seconds. I'm using dialup which is probably why it happens but is there anyway for me to lower the sound quality or something so it stops doing this? Sometimes it's perfect.
TS works fine for me as long as the codec isn't too high.

Yeah, dialup is yor problem. I'm not familar with the various voice apps out there but I am familiar enough with the way data is transfered over the net. People's voices probably cut out because you are dropping TCP packets due to the high latency you have. Your system waits for the next packet in line and when it never comes it asks for a rebroadcast and with you being on dialup that ends up being the nail in the coffin.
If their is some way to decrease packet size or quality in the program that should help... but then again what you wanted to know is if their was a way to decrease the quality so that's neither here nor there.
Team Speak is probably either a better written program or you might be simply 'closer' (in internet terms) to the TS servers you use.
These sorts of voice programs were probably never designed with dialup players as a priority due to the bandwidth requirements needed to move voice traffic over the net while also moving gaming traffic along side it.
I was bored and just felt like babbling... hope osmeone can actually answer your question thogh.

TS uses very harsh compression, so it transfers much smaller amounts of data. At the other end of the spectrum is Skype, which has extremely good sound reproduction, but which will make GW lag simply by stealing so much bandwidth even on a 10MBit connection.
Ventrilo is intermediate in sound quality/compression.
Regarding the OP's question: have you checked the cutoff? All the voice-comms stop transmitting when sound goes under a certain threshold value, and that value must be adjusted so it always sends when someone is talking, but not else.

Yep I've got no clue what half the stuff either of you said just was. If there is a way to fix it and you know it you'll have to walk me through step by step.
I know it's like that because of my connection but you'd think there would be a way for me to do something to make it better.
All ts servers are fine for me I've never had a laggy TS server unless the codec was extremely high.
