Ultimate newbie question: What is a signet "ring"?
generik
Why is it called a signet ring?
Lcount
cause I think it's supposed to be a ring you put on your finger (in game) probably.
I'm just guessin here, maybe all skills are meant to be like that and that's why you only get 8 skills at a time , cause it's one ring for each finger

I've often wondered why they call them rings too... the design is much too large to fit on a finger.
However, signet brass knuckles, that's another story

Serpreme
going with the ring around the finger thing.

The seal is engraved on the ring, which is used on official documents, pressed into hot wax.
Because of the various definitions of seal (which can refer to both a design/emblem, or to seal something shut), I'm not really sure on the specifics of the process >.<
Edit: That is, I'd always imagined it was used to seal envelopes, but it could also be used simply as a mark on a document as a sign of authenticity, considering in those times just how difficult and expensive making such a seal would be.
In any case, it's called a signet ring because signets are generally rings. Apparently dates back at least as far as (Dan. 6:8-10, 12).

it was used for both purposes you outlined above. to show authenticity for an official doccument or something, they would simply drip wax at the bottom, where your signature would be. then press the ring into it. for messages not intended to be public, it would be used to seal the document/envelope shut so that it couldnt be opened without breaking the wax seal.

EDIT: Assuming that you can wear signet rings on your thumbs...

Mkay... So they are actually rings.
Alright, maybe they should have a trader in town upgrading your rings to stainless steel, gold, silver, and platinum
Those would be some rust-immune rings!

Yeah, it does go back to the beta.
Let me explain in full:
Back in beta, you found skills in the form of charms, as item drops. You couldn't apply them to yourself unless you merged it with a skill ring, which were specific to the classes. Combining a skill ring and a skill charm let you permanently learn a skill, to put on and off your bar as you wish. There were also skill necklaces, which let you temporarily learn, and then consume a skill. I think it lasted like 3 days for an expert skill necklace.
...I think the reason they took it out is because it thusly made the game too much about grind and finding skills.

It's because the rings are made out of baby swans.

You know when 4 elementalists and a monk get together and combine their rings with the power of
Earth
Air
Fire
Water and
Heart
they summon the awesome power of captain planet:

Bahahahahahahahahaha j/k
Back in the day, you bought or got a skill ring as loot and bought a skill charm and learned the skill into the signet ring. You know, because keeping skills in your head isn't as cool and rings give an excuse to show a skill bar (pictures of your rings?). ANet weren't into thumb rings so that's why we don't get 10 skills at a time. Anything which you can partly develop by counting on your fingers FTW

well... back during the beta there were Rings and Pendants. Rings allowed skills to be permanent, Pendants allowed you to use just about any skill temporarily. (24 hrs) Those concepts are not completely lost, but the blank rings and pendants are only in the alpha build right now. The Signet Rings are preassigned rings is all. not customizable.
I think the main reason it was dropped was cause it allowed skills from classes you are not a part of to be mixed on a character build. Imagine a Elementist Necro with Monk skills... Thats what was happening... All anyone had to do was get a monk friend to drap a skill to a pendant or ring and then give it back to the other person. then that skill was essentually Dupped... and given to another player.
I used it with my buddy so he could get a pet with my charm animal skill (he was a warrior / monk)... It worked fine, but I could see abuse posibilities... and understand why they opted to pull it out of release.
