Pet attacks should be categorized and one slot should be for each category. As it is now, there is not reason to use more than two or three pet attacks because you will basically be reliant on your pet.
Since you are the owner, not the pet, you should not be the one that has the pet attacks. They should have a seperate dialog box for pet attack sequences, so you can actually control your pet. For example, attack at will, prevent enemy from escaping, defend owner.
Peehaps the ctaegories should be:
Defensive Pet Skills --> anything that boosts their defenses
Attack Pet SKills--> anything that is an attack interms of damage
Pet tactics Skills --> anything that does something other than boost armor/reduce damage or deal damage

Good Idea.
Also, Why not have another skill bar above the main one, w/ say.....four slots. Then maybe more people would use pets.

With all the ideas for new GUI items, I don't think I'd be able to see my character anymore.
I personally think making Charm Animal an innecessity would solve most of the problem. Some people use them as throw away tanks, but a pet with no beast mastery is just a waste of a skill slot put to better use. The pet skills are more a variety of items to choose from, not really something to invest your whole skillbar into. I personally think having ANY pet skill in your bar should carry your pet with you; in addition, make Charm Animal, in addition to its worthless effect of taming an animal, also have the ability to resurrect your animal with 1 HP or something, with the same cast time as when it's used to capture.

i think a better idea is to have the pet have his own skill bar with limited slots maybe 4 at the max. to balance it out elite skills cannot be used on his bar. then i think you should be able to set a preset AI like defensive, offensive, balance, all out, conservative, and ect..... make the AI accually learn from the presets and skills most frequently used. i loved the AI system in star ocean 3 because you could control the character and use the same attacks and fight styles over and over and the AI would copy it.
AI advancement for pve should be increased alot seeing as pugs are becoming less and less apealing (leave it to the 1 dumb ass war to tank a mob of 8 with poison and phantasm).
