Quite a Strange Bot - Perdition Rock
FengShuiBundi
Sorry for not having any pics. I know that it would validate this thread, but at the time I didn't plan on making a thread/thinking of taking pics.
I went to Perdition Rock yesterday to cap Echo. I got into a group, and we picked up another monk (the botter) before heading out. (I was also a monk, healer). We had no clue that he was a botter.
In town, he asked to invite him for some wanderings, and new experiences.
So, we did... he accepted the invite.
Once in the EA, we had decided on going left for a change. Well, the bot had other intentions. It veered right. It used the minimap to draw a safe path towards the first Flesh Golems.
The monk then ordered us to stay back, while it proceeded to smite the golems. He did this for the whole island (Fleshgolems), aggroing HUGE mobs, and smiting them.
He would first use the map to draw a couple thick lines showing where we shouldn't pass, told us to not go further, then would aggro the mobs, and smite them to death.
I thought this was very funny. The teammates started leaving, and I never did get echo (I got it in 5 minutes with a hench team later that day) during that run.
Anybody know why somebody would make a bot to help out other people? Drops and XP are spread out, so this isn't exactly efficient. Was this just some creative/generous botter with a wild idea?
Anybody else seen him?

What exactly made you believe they're a bot?
With the influx of chinese players, it's easily understandable how any player could have limited mastery of English, beyond some phrases ("¿Puedo ir al baño, por favor?" does not a spanish speaker make.). Many brazillians, chinese, and koreans I've played with on numerous RPG's knew trade phrases, basic party phrases, the names of skills, items, and spells, and that's about it.
On the other hand, repetitive actions, especially things like casting PbAoE offensive spells when no enemies are around, are possible indicators. Of course, since this game has relatively fast energy regeneration, as opposed to having to spend money on potions, that's not nearly as strong as it could be.

The #1 way to ensure you are dealing with a bot:
They will NEVER, under any circumstances, speak except for:
They will only speak this if you cause them to die:
"why?"
Repeatedly. Over and over.

Doesn't sound too different to me, and I don't they'd make random arena PvP bots... Or would they? O_o;

Well, if he was an english/american player, the phrase "I want to touch you where the sun doesn't shine" would have touched a nerve or elicted a response. Sadly, my attempts at communication yielded no results.
Why would a player want his party to stay back, while he solos 15+ monsters? He only went after Flesh Golems. The lines he drew were repeated for emphasis. I told the whole party to stop drawing on the map, and yet "somebody" still did.
Phrases such as "Go Left" and "Stop" did nothing.
He wasn't speaking. He was entering a preprogrammed phrase every time we encountered a mob. There was no difference in the phrase, no random capitalizations or "Go leftwwwwwwwwwwww" even while he was moving, strong indicators of a human player, because running while typing isn't the easier thing if you use the keyboard for movement.
I'm gonna go hunt for him.

LOL, that is really weird :P

If it can smite farm flesh golems without getting killed it's even better than most players o.o;
FengShuiBundi
At one point I told the team to hang back and let him kill everything.
Lasareth
Well heck, I'd take this bot to just net me some free items. Maybe I'd get a gold or purple while they do all the work.
EverBlue
No kidding. Sounds like an awesome bot. Hey, buddy, solo everything, I'll follow you and LEECH!
DarkWasp
Sure beats the Shou Gou Ni crowd in the Ember Light Camp.
Serpreme
Even with sshots i wouldnt believe this was a bot...
one of the biggest botting rules is...dont get caught. You going off with a big party...is exactly what you DONT do. in a game where you can easily make a instance of every map...its a botters paradise.

At least you were capping. FengShui, PvE?!! WTF!, even though you are an elite PvEer
hobodude666
In case you guys dont know. lol. What he witness was truly a bot, that bot was meant for powerleveling/farming. just have 2 pcs. 1 to kill the fleshgolems and the other one to follow him.
spiritofcat
Definitely doesn't sound like a bot to me.
Seems too advanced. Maybe I just don't know enough about bots though.

Had something similar in the FoW before. This monk would stay near the group at all times, never responded, never did anything but smite. We let her die eventually, and she did nothing. Her body just stayed there for a few hours while we went about our business.
We all assumed she was a bot because she would never stand still, and would always try to aggro anything. But, it was designed to stay near the group so the patroling pattern could be seen.

It would be very difficult to write a bot that drew lines on the map where you shouldn't cross, or one that knew when to double the line for emphasis. It would be a horribly complicated but completely useless addition to a bot so why would anyone go to the bother?
What you encountered was just a non-communicative player.

do you not understand that bots does not have to be done thru macro? it can be made thru packets. all they have to do is allow packets to be sent to the server and if its encrypted they just decrypt it and put them all into 1 nifty program and have a bot

Umm dont ya just think it was a 105/55er?
FengShuiBundi
105/55er would get obliterated by the Flesh Golems. With a standard smiter, you stand a chance. But, most smite builds don't run remove hex, and this one used it.
Plus, read how I tried to get the person, if it was, to say something.
He didn't say a thing.
I dunno, thought it was wierd, wanted to post it and see if you guys had ever seen anything like it before.
I don't even think a real person would want to go ahead and aggro 15 Flesh Golems. The "person" didn't have ressurect.

Hmmm. Very strange indeed.
I'm curious: were the lines they were drawing on the minimap perfectly straight? If so, I'd say it definitely sounds like some kind of crazy bot, but if they were wiggly and different each time, I'd think that would be too much trouble to program into a bot (although I admit to knowing nothing about bot programming, so could easily be wrong).
Then again, it would be easy to program the bot to do everything else and just have an operator draw lines on the map, so that's not saying much. You'd think the person would have answered more to delay getting caught though if that were the case..

I've had some experience trying to program a bot. A simple bot is fairly easy to code, but once you get into complex interactions you're begging for trouble.
What I was looking for was a "follow bot" for Diablo 2. There used to be a bot that would let you run a pally behind your human controled toon, using his aura. He wouldn't do anything except follow you, and the overall bot was detectable.
So I tried to write one that would be undetectable. I ran a wind druid, and wanted 3 bots using various skills to enhance my prime. I would be using teleport, so they all had to have that as well. Then I had to code a way for them to follow me when I tele'd, and also when I went through a portal or stairway. But if they always ended up in the same position relative to me, I thought that might be detectable, so now I had to figure out a random patern that would stay near enough to me to not cause new problems.
Then there was the targeting of my bots skills. I mostly chose untargeted skills, but some needed to at least have a general direction to cast in.
It got so complicated, and the program got so long, that I ended up with something that started causing new errors every time I managed to fix something. It just never worked out.
The reason I bring all this up is because this bot sounds way too complicated to be workable to me. As others have mentioned, the writing on the mini map seems hard to pull off without causing lots of errors.
As to why would anyone make a "helper" bot? They're common in other games, why wouldn't someone make one here?

A bot as described by the OP is of the simplest sort. It followed a set routine that didn't require any input from the game, except the initial party join. Drawing on the map wouldn't be harder than anything else.
A bot this simple might be nothing more than a script that controls mouse movement and keyboard input, and only needs to look at the parts of game memory that would indicate party invite.

You don't need removehex to smite Fleshys - you can just leave the lingering on and use any coverhexes for damageboosts. Its not like the fleshes can either do enough damage even with lingering, or better yet that it affects regen at all.
Or if you're monk primary, run spellbreaker. Infact I'm surprised someone with enough knowledge of perdition rock to do it literally in their sleep and according to you write a programm to follow those steps to the t wouldn't have figured out how to get past the Soul Leech monkeys, its ridicously easy. The whole place is really smiters paradise

Do you not understand by what i meany by "Sending Packets"? Its so simple easier than using macros. Just record the packet when your attacking "Targeting a monster" once its dead. stop the record, and resend the packet but modified to search for other "Monsters" . With this method all you have to do is record and send packets over and over. this is one way how WoW had its teleportation explioted. Botters record the packet when they enter a near area and send it if they want to go their.
Ex: I want to Zone from Ascalon to Embers camp. So first i Warp to Ember while recording packet. Once im there i stop. go back to ascalon or anywhere else. and resend that recorded packet and you will go to ember camp.
This is the most simplest packet botting method commonly used to Diablo 2 and other online rpg games.
BTW Diablo 2 LOD all use packet sending to bot and hack. I've done it myself many times..Cough* 500+sojs from Charsi *Cough* and transfering Hacked Runeword items from Open B.net to Closed B.net.

by doing that...what if you started a new character...then replayed those packets or whatever....could you theoretically get a lvl 1 single profession character to ember?
of course...that would be useless...but you know...boredness

If GW is that stupid.
I hope it isn't and sending such fishy packet would only mark account and ip for deletion: :>

Come on, it wasn't a bot. There's absolutely nothing that suggests it was a bot except that it took on a lot of enemies and won. Which players do all the time. In fact, everything about it says it WASN'T a bot.
At most it may have been a guy using scripts.

If it's a bot I want to know the programmer. 10 years into programming and I wouldn't want to worry about drawing on minimaps!
Actually I run & type all the time: just press 'R' and then type. Short sentences are easy, long ones just get split up.

However the behaviour of the supposed bot is not consistent with a bot, whether they be using macros or a hook to spoof packets. What we have here is a character that shows numerous signs of cognitive thought that would be very tricky to program.
On the other hand, the only indication that it might be a bot seems to be that he ignored people. Alot of players are entirely unresponsive so that is hardly conclusive. It is also possible that the player knew the OP was trying to elicit a response and merely refused to do so.

Everything says that this wasn't a bot just an uncommunicative player who wants to do his own thing. It happens. I guess at the most it could be a bot controlled by a person (ie. bot does fighting) whilst human 'master' does other things. That might be possible, but certainly not purely autonomously.
