Gold Rush

I've been sitting in Lion's Ach for quite a while now and noticed one thing...
Everyone is asking for gold weapons while they don't see that there are collecter items or purple items that are just as good, if not better.
If they just stop spamming the chat channel for a moment and take the time to do some exploring they would have saved themselves alot of typing and plats.
Examples of good collecter weapons are the max damage long sword with +15% damage while in stance (which I also use myself), I've seen people asking for it, but in gold form.
Paying more money for a gold item, or collecting items and making money in the process only to find that you're better off like this?
What would you guys prefer? Or what do you think of this situation?

Some people want perfection, the best looking items, etc. When they have money, why not spend?
A gold perfect weapon compared to a collector's item is like Droknar's armor compared to 15k. They're statistically equal in efficiency, but one just looks better. Nothing wrong with paying more for that.

Yep, if you've got the cash, might as well get something that makes your little heart go pitty pat. It's academic and cosmetic but....meh.
KamikazeChicken
The majority of what I use is collector besides my Warriors Sword/Shield. I stumbled across a 16 def with str req [38 health (enchanted)/-2 rec dmg (8%)] shield, so that's more exciting to me than the collector shields. Shields are about the only items that can be found that may beat a collector version. I also found a 15% > rare max crystalline, so I use that since it's exactly what I needed.
People who want the gold items are in it for rarity and have nothing better to spend their gold on. If they want to waste gold on such trivial things, I won't bother trying to stop them. I just prefer my own drops and collector items.

Yes people are foolish. They spend all this time asking for gold items which are the same as any other purple or even blue item!
Take for example the Storm bow, which is nothing more but a fancy looking long bow. A blue or purple max damage when will got for around 3-10K... where as a Gold "Godly" (Hate that word) max damage storm bow will go for 30K+
Why are pople willing to pay that much towards a bow? Or anything for that matter.

I don't think it is a matter of paying more platinum for a gold item because it looks better.
For example, i had this happen to me:
n00b: WTB good shield...
me: come to storage, i have some max ones...
n00b: gold?
me: no, blues and purples
n00b: ok, no thanks...
That pissed me off, the items i had weren't bad at all... The guy simply wasn't interested based solely on the fact that the shields I had weren't golden
edit:: Somehow, it seems that the idea that gold items are "strictly better" has firmly implanted itself in the heads of many a player; a pity, because they're not doing themselves a favour

It's the range and speed I was looking for. You can't get that from any collector items (allas).
It's true that some things look better, but there are things that or special and need some extra plats to obtain, that I don't denie.
But I shan't be foolish to spend 100k+ on a weapon that I can make by buying the parts cheapely and a cheap sword that has the same thing. and voila, exactly the same sword, even though it's not gold.

Also, if someone says "WTB good _______" they somehow always mean rare. Whereas if someone says "WTS good _______" it almost always means subpar items. (Why exactly would I want a Cane with no mods?) I don't know, just my experience with trading.

results were totally negative, only other possibility is that each type of sword has another damage/type mod like with bows. Horn Bows for an example have +10% penetration.
The mods for all weapons can be found here

GOD if it was gold I would have put "WTS Gold max dmg Fellblade (with bonus or w/e)". It happens to me atleast 15 times a day.
Maybe it's better to just sell all good purple items to the npc or salvage them, and watch how people act like idiots by buying something that can be just as good looking and/or perfect.

ofcourse, I've seen those idiots asking about a Fellblade I was selling. I just say it in chat "WTS max damage Fellblade", and they come asking "gold?".

I know, I've sold weapons myself. Be more descriptive: "WTS max dmg Fellblade clean no mods". It's hard to find a weapon if all people say is "WTS max weapon" if you don't even know the stats on it. It takes a few extra seconds but saves you hours of non-interested buyers PMing you.
Also, I'm thinking you're aiming for the wrong crowd if you keep getting asked if it's gold. Try a smaller town with people who don't already have max godly stuff. There are plenty of other players who will buy purple, blue, or even white items; you just have to look in the right places.

A storm bow has the exact same speed, range, and accuracy as a longbow. It fires once every 2.5 seconds, has the longest range, and a normal arc (the higher the arc, the less accurate). So besides the look of a storm bow, you could pay less for a regular longbow, or just get a collector longbow outside of augry rock that is max damage (req - 9) and 15%>50.

Let me take a minute to think about why I shouldn't invest in an uber-godly bow with almost perfect damage (say ... 14-26), and ... woah ... 7% extra damage when hexed with a zealous bow string for ... LOL ... the bargain price of 250K and 20 ecto ... RIGHT!!! ...
Honestly, I don't care about the weapon look, it's not something you see in towns anyway, and I doubt people really care when they chop-chop for their lives ... so if you want to look, peek fast, I typically aim straight for the eye ...
I vote Yay for the collector bow.
Supervixen
I like collector bows as well, they take to dye well and I like the flexibility of just going out and getting another flat/long/short/whatever bow for testing/new build purposes whenever I feel like it.
As for someone saying storm bows have the same speed as short bows... Please just use this. http://www.guildwarsguru.com/content...ies-id1092.php

It seems a few people believe the Storm bows to be better then then all other bows... all they are are fancy looking lowbows.
Since I carry a half moon bow (Primary weapon) and a Storm Bow (Pulling, long range), I can tell you that their rate of fire is no where near the same.

The reason why people are willing to pay alot for "gold" and cool looking items is because gold is virtually useless after you complete the game, but it becomes ridiculously easy to get.

On the flip side there is nothing more irratating than when I am sitting in LA spamming:
"[BUYING} MAX GOLD SHIELD (str or tactics) +45/-2 (both while enchanted)"
And have 10 jackasses coming up showing me a collector's shield...

ummm... there isn't a collector 45/-2 enchanted shield with 16al... or is there?

Huh, Gold items do have great mods.
I have a gold Earth Magic Staff
+19% protection recharge
Fast Recovery from Dazed
Air Magic +1 (17% Chance)
+30 health
+10 Energy
You dont get this from Blue items, not those stats (Except the 20/20), and they are limited to 2 mods, occasionaly 3. Gold Items often have room for 4 mods.

AR12 +45/-2 Enchanted
FenrirOfSleipnir
To be honest, I haven't see nthat shield anywhere o.o;;;
Maybe the npc is in some secluded spot in the desert or something, but I haven't found him.
Anyways, thanks for correcting me on the Stormbow thing.

The AR12 +45/-2 Enchanted Shield is between druids overlook and the wilds. I think the Manmoon Jungle. The item he trades for is Ancient Eyes.

Going back to the original post:
Yes, there is a trend for people to buy gold items. So what?
It's like buying a pair of jeans from Walmart/Marks & Spencer, or buying a pair of jeans from Harrods/Gucci etc.
Both are jeans, both have the same practical use, one has an associated "name" to it, while the other doesn't.
Same thing with gold/collectors weapons, or collectors/15k armour. Both have the same practical use, even the same stats, but one has a "name" (if you will).
Obviously, your adventurer on a budget, who just wants a practical and decent weapon will opt for the collectors bow, while a richer player looking for the nicer graphic, or the gold text will not be too concerned about splashing out the money.
I don't see a problem in this. The rich, if they have earned their money, and not just bought off Ebay are welcome to the rarer stuff. The poorer, or shrewder can stick with their weapons of choice too. What there should NOT be is any amount of jealousy between the two. If a rich player wants to pay high prices for something, it's up to them, and poorer players bemoaning the prices, or accusing the owners of gold items is pathetic. Likewise, rich people displaying any element of snobbery over a player who prefers to go cheap is also pathetic. You can play how you want, and buy whatever items you want. At the end of the day, it's not real money you're using, and not real items you're buying. Bear that in mind, and you have a better perspective on things.

There is no 15>50 collector item if I remember correctly.
Rulke
There are for all the different bows, but not any of the other weapon types.

The 'AR16 +45/-2 while hexed' shield is give by Karl Jackobs (or something like that) on the bottom right of Vulture drifts by the entrance to the Arid sea.
I think he wants 5 jawbones for it which can be had, if I'm not mistaken, by killing sand giants. There are plenty of them close by.

Also another thing I've experienced is people getting scolded and insulted because they SELL an item that's "perfect" or "near perfect". I'm ussually the one saying to leave them do their business, but ofcourse that never seems to have any effect what so ever.
Maybe it's not really related to the primairy post, but it's a subject that's close to this.

Collector items rock so much. I can spend like 10 seconds getting someone to give me Azure Remains dirt cheap, and turn around and cash them in for a sweet item, that I can put mods on. Gold items mean nothing to me anymore, considering they are so popular now.
Ari Veyes
Some colector items have great stats and are cheap but they are UGLY and don't give the owner any pride. By the way, have you ever tried to upgrade you're colectors ascalon bow 15>50 with good upgrades?
kbealow
I use nothing but collector weapons and clean weapons...I like to put my own upgrades to them to personalize it more for what I need.
Mark Twain
collecting items are sometimes better. i dont know why people would offer 50k for a gold sword or something and then 1k for the exact same weapon just a collectors item
Elistan Theocrat
I'm often amused by some of the WTB ads I see in different places.
I've got a soft spot for "WTB GOOD WEAPON!!!"
Really? Are you sure I cant interest you in this crap weapon I've got taking up space in my storage? God forbid they take a second to do some homework and think about what they want beyond somthing, "good".

My toons run pretty much exclusively on collector items. Sure I stick some mods on them, but I'm perfectly satisfied with the stats on them. I certainly am not about to pay 50k+ for some "godly" weapon that might do 2 or 3 more dps.
Dreamcatcher X
forgive me if im wrong, but dont gold items carry more upgrade options?
Antilles
Yes that is true Dream.

Last week I was in a PUG when a "gold" cesta dropped for me. I picked it up and thought..."sweet, a gold item"...until I identified it....it had NOTHING on it. No mods at all, no prefix no suffix nothing....
Since then, I dont care what color the text of my items are....it's not like it does anything...

just to clarify things , there are many people who know that gold items can contain MORE and BETTER mods. you will never get anything above a 10/7 sundering on a purple or blue item. (same falls in line with all mods, like enchanting wont go above 14% on purple or blue, etc).
the reason you see people spamming for nondescript gold items, such as the fav' spam " WTB GOLD ITEMS AT STORAGE " is because they hope for someone not so knowledgable about weapon mods prices to come and sell them a "sundering short sword of enchanting" or something along those lines with perfect mods or something close to perfect for like 10k or so. Salvage any of those mods off, either the sundering 10/10 or the 20% enchanting pommel and wow. you have just made like a 90k profit. That's what most people do at least... some others are merely hoping to buy a good gold item. That's why people are instantly turned off when you say it's only a purple or a blue.

I have gotten perfect stats/upgrades off of purples before.. it is much more rare but possible.. did you know you can even find minor runes from plain white armors? its extremely rare and not even worth the cost of the id kit at all but still possible.. if you don't believe me, I dont care :-P
