I think I found the source of the problem.

I had updated the Marvell Yukon integrated ethernet controller on Windows Update on 7/20/2005 to version 8.35.

By rolling it back to 8.32 (6/27/2005) or any previous driver before 8.35, the crashing and freezing stopped. Ok ok so I tried everything I can do to make Guild Wars not lockup on me. I went through great lengths with no good results. Until I came across this info and I have been playing lockup free ever since. So if you ever updated the 8.35 on windows update try rolling back to your previous driver and see if that helps. I am even online still as I type this post! woot!

*EDIT*
If you can't rollback drivers try downloading from their website found here:
http://www.marvell.com/drivers/search.do

If you don't know how to check the version of your driver post can be found here:

What do you know, I completely forgot about actually installing that update around that time to fix an unrelated problem (which it didn't, and hence was useless anyways). I rolled it back to my last one now (.25) and will post how it worked.

Right click "My Computer", choose "Properties".
Now click on the "Hardware" tab. Once there click on "Device Manager"
Under the Network adapters; you should see a Marvell Yukon Gigabit Ethernet Controller.
Right click and choose "properties", under that window go to "drivers"
Make certain that you have the 8.35.2.3 driver installed. If you do just go ahead and roll back to previous driver. It will go back to the previous driver installed. Make sure to reboot after to see if it fixed the problem with your lockups.

This worked for me! I rolled my drivers back... they went back to 7.1... something, but I played for hours with no lockup!

What video card and drivers are you using? I have a Yukon chip as well, but I'm thinking the drivers for my Geforce 6600gt are to blame for the lockups (anything in the 7x.xx series). Also, I wouldn't trust ANY drivers on the Windows Update site.

This is all well and good if you have that particular ethernet controller, but a lot of us, including me, don't. Also, people like me who are running XP x64 don't have the luxury of simply rolling back to previous drivers, there aren't a huge amount of 64bit ethernet drivers out at the moment.

the link to get drivers is from Marvell's own site

http://www.marvell.com/drivers/search.do

You just select the corresponding criteria from the drop down menus to get the appropriate driver.

Hope this will help.

I am going to install the drivers and see if this solves my problem as well. Will post back with results.

Well at the Marvell site they didn't provide me with an older version of the driver for Win2K but they did provide the latest one released this month.

8.27.4.3 and so far it seems to be working.. I left the game on for 5 hours and it didn't lockup. Settings were at 1280x1024 with 2xAA at the second highest quality.

I believe that the problem for some players lockups would be their ethernet drivers.

Those of you running drivers that are 8.35 should definately try to update to newer ones or rollback to older ones.

I will try to run the game even longer on 1600x1200 4xAA and see how long it holds up.

Thanks to Wutda for posting this in the first place.

This should b a sticky as well like another Unofficial fix for locksups and freezes

Okay, so I am just reporting that at my second run of leaving the game on has been successful. Game has not locked up after 6 hours at 1600x1200 with 4xAA and highest quality settings.

I used to get lockups within the hour, 30 minuts or the max i could play as 3 hours. I was never able to get this game to run this long two times in a row.

wutdafeezi, I just saw this post and If this works I may hunt you down a kiss you.

I have nearly rebuilt my pc through suggestions from GW Tech SUpport, Friends, and the web to try and fix my lockups.

Have a p4 2.8 HT was told it could be heat (spent 50 dollars on a beetle cooler) and a couple more exhaust fans.

Was told it could be RAM went from 1GIG to 3 Gigs.

Was told it could be power went from 300 watt to 580.

Was told it was the onboard sound. Bought and audigy 2

Finally was told it was my 9800Pro overheating bought an ATI silencer cooler.

SO....if simply rolling back this driver fixes my lockups be looking for me

Hi when your game use to crash how did it crash? My game just freezes and then I have to ctrl-alt-del to get back to the desktop, so i was wondering if this is the same problem.

I have changed my drivers. On the main screen it shows the driver as version 7.21.1.3 date 19/08/2004, however if I go to driver details it shows version 8.32.2.3 built by: WinDDK

Is this right?

Thanks

First off, when my game crashed I couldn't even do a ctrl+alt+del. I had to manually shut it off by holding the power on button. Second off, after rolling back the drivers did you have any problems running GW? As long it doesn't display the 8.35.2.3 version of the drivers you should be set. Also curious what kind of motherboard are you using?

what kind of motherboard do you use? I hope this fixes the problem. I wish more people who did roll back drivers could post their results. If any of you are wondering where I got this information. I was browsing the ASUS forums thinking it might be my bios being out of date. Then I came across this info and well it's been the best thing to happen since I purchased GW

First off Systems do not come preloaded with Windows x64 so either you have a high end system that cost a wod or you spent extra money on something that will not help you at all. If you did well Im sorry to say that you are not going to get much of a gain, not even better compatability.

Secondly Guildwars is designed to run on a 32 bit platform not a 64 bit one. It is plainly stated that guild wars Does not support 64 bit windows enviroments. Read the Tech support page . . . help yourself.

Hi there,

silly question I know but is the Marvell Yukon an ethernet port? If so were you running Guild Wars on this port? If not and simply having dodgy drivers installed on caused the problem then what would happen if I simply uninstalled the Yukon drivers completely?

btw I am having the random blackout problems can't work out solution at all!!

Hi,

Im using a Asus A8N-SLi Deluxe which has 2 ethernet ports the MARVELL PCI Gbit LAN controller and a Nvidia N Force Network Controller.

Ive tried updating and rolling back both sets of drivers. Since reading this post and trying different things I currently have the Marvell uninstalled and Im using the Nvidia port, however the game still crashes.

I had a simular problem with mXo which went away with a game update. Ill keep trying different things.

I bought a new computer just a week ago and I loaded up guild wars on it and had this problem: goes to blue screen and says critical error update BIOS. I immediately thought it was the computer overheting because it was a laptop and I never once heard the fan come one, but the computer didn't even feel warm. I eventually sent it back to dell since it was new I figure they will fix it. But does it sounds like that could have been my problem? If so is it possible to roll back a driver if the only driver on there is the newest one?

My problem was different as my machine would simply "freeze"....lockup while in the middle of an action in guild wars and I would be unable to do anything: move, move the mouse, ctrl alt del anything. I would have to power down using the off button. The lockups were also very sparatic could take 5 min could take 2 hours. This driver rollback seems to have worked. 3 days now and not a lockup.

When a computer tells you you need a BIOs update then it is good to update it. Most of the time there is no real need to update the BIOs. Dell should have had your BIOs updated in the first place. Updating a BIOs is not hard, but it can be tricky. Why not have Dell update like you did that way if they mess up the update then they will replace your motherboad.

This is why I also pay extra for the Floppy Drive. To me it is the best way to update a BIOs. That is the only real reason I still have Floppy Drives on all my computers anymore.

I actually have this card, and it was at a lower version and disabled. I tried to upgrade to the latest drivers just now from the Marvell web site. I'm just wondering... if the card is disabled would you still have this issue?

My computer would totally lockup too.
