what is ascention?

ive just got lvl 20 and my platemail armour and im all happy, and people are telling me that i now need to 'ascend'. i dont get it :S
how do i ascend? and what happens when i do ascend?

Complete the 3 desert missions and return to Augry Rock. There you will fight your doppleganger. Once you have defeated him/her you are ascended

You continue with the story line... The only difference once ascended is you can switch your secondary profession, enter Underworld or Fissure Of Woe, and you can enter the Hall Of Heroes.

can you ascend your your lvl20? someone told me once you hit lvl20 you cant "ascend".

Bedlight, you can ascend if you're level 20. There is no upper restriction; the lowest anyone has ascended a character is level 3.

That's not true. You can ascend at any level if you have finished the 3 missions in the desert. I did ascended with my lvl20.
