How to live with PvE and PvP

When I started playing this game a few months ago, I was overwhelmed with the combinations of classes. After a couple of weeks, I'd filled up all my character slots. Spending so much time progressing through the game, gaining skills, and learning, I grew fond of my characters.

Now, all but one of my toons has 15k armor (the other one, a female Elementalist, has beautiful Fissure armor). I have invested so much time in these toons, I could never imagine deleting them. But now a new chapter has turned in my game experience. I want to play more PvP.

I've played a lot of arenas with my RPG toons. I love to try different builds, but I"m limited by attribute refund points, and buying new runes, weapons, et cetera. I refuse to delete my RPG toons. Thus is the grind with PvP -- attribute refund points and runes. Yes, there is a grind.

So I thought up a solution to the four character limit. Add another toon. "BUT ZEHLY, ANET WILL ONLY GIVE YOU FOUR LOL!!!!111." I know that. STFU.

The fifth toon is PvP only -- in the true sense. There are (so far) two stipulations to this character slot:
  1. You must have filled up your other four with RPG toons. (Yes, you can still use those slots for PvP if desired);
  2. You may not use the fifth slot for an RPG toon.

This allows for expandability to a certain extent. It also allows for RPG lovers to progress into the unique PvP environment offered by GW. And for those of us with four RPG toons, it gives a purpose to having faction and unlocking stuff.

I find this to be a fair compromise to adding more slots. I know a concern of ANET is server storage. If you add another slot for RPG characters, it will increase the amount of storage required by up to 20%. If that slot is for PvP only, then it will not add that much, since PvP toons don't require nearly as much server-side data as an RPG toon.

What are your thoughts on this? What could be better about it? Has someone already posted it? What are the negative impacts possibly resulting from this?

ANet has said that they might consider adding more character slots with new chapters. That said, a 5th character is unnecessary at this point. They specifically told you four characters before you made them, it was your choice. I made my choice; I'll have to delete one of my characters these days to go back into PvP. If you really must have more characters, you could get another account.

I do have another account. It sounds like you have little if no sympathy for those of us who love RPG, and then become attracted to PvP. No TRUE RPG Lover can separate with something he/she has spent over a hundred hours getting close to.

having 3 rp slots and one pvp makes sense, as 3 slots allows you to unlock all class skills. 4 rp slots is completely arbitrary. It might make sense to expand to 7 slots, so you can have one of each primary, but adding more slots can slow the economy. Forcing people to clear their inventories often results in generosity and trade.

That said, if arena-net ever adds more classes, we'll have to see a huge jump in character slots, or else there will be problems. For instance, if 2 new classes are added and only one new character slot to reflect how many you now need to unlock all skills, EVERYONE will be limited to playing a combination of those two classes, and PVE would be very strange for a while. I hope they don't do this .

Yeah, personally I think your PVP should be a different animal altogether. It shouldn't have refunds, it should have the ability to change armours, weapons, etc easily without swapping out and deleting your character and recreating it.

I do love RPGs. They typically have the best storylines and the best gameplay of any game type.
That aside, I think that there is not much of a difference between a PvE and a PvP character. About the only difference is the Quest Log, which wouldn't take a lot of space compared to items.

as somebody mentioned previously, the chapter 2 (ie. expansion, ie. connected sequel) should come with 100% more storage space and 4 more character slots minimum, since we are in effect buying a whole new game (albeit, one that connects to the predecessor). I love the idea of a PvP exclusive slot. A 5th slot that is reserved for only PvP. This would save a lot of trouble since I too want a fourth RP character but I can't because I now understand the importance of having a PvP character. (I deleted my level 12 mesmer because I needed a PvP slot... can't delete the others... too painful to kill them)

I am all with you in the begging for more character slots...

That said, I play both PvE and PvP. I only have RP characters but that doesn't keep me from playing PvP with them. RP characters make fine PvP charaters, too. Why shouldn't they? They come fully equipped and have all necessary skills unlocked. PvP characters are for people who don't want to play PvE or change their build every 2 minutes, that's all.
