Card Heating Issue

Am I the only one that's still seeing a 15 degree celcius increase in vid card heat for this game only. I run EQ2 at high detail settings and don't go over 75. With guild wars, I can crank everything up and it runs 30+fps, but I hit 90 on the Nvidia temp tests. I know that's not good for the card (a BFG 6800gt OC). I run Unreal, Doom, WOW, EQ2, and lots of others with everything cranked and no temp issues. And it's not like it slows the game that much... Even turning everything to the lowest settings with no AA I hit 80-85 degrees...

Interesting, I have a 6600GT OC'd as far as possible, and my temp only hits 42c.

Well, I'm using stock fans (everything that came with the unit). But, the weird thing is that it only happens on this game. Nothing else goes above 75... I've already burned out two Radeon 9800's in the past couple of years (different PCs), so it would be bad to blow this one too...

Those 9800's are bad when it comes to heat. You say you have already killed 2, so I guess its not just this game, but other games aswell?

Have you looked into the aftermarket heatsink and fan for the 9800 cards?

Are you talking in farenheit or celsius, moon? If that's celsius, that is really hot. How about getting a slot fan (assuming you have a PCI slot free directly under the AGP slot)?

No, I don't use a 9800 anymore. I have a Nvidia 6800GT. The 9800s were in other computers, and they both died due to faulty fans, not heat naturally generated by the cards.

I have had my 6800GT for 6 months now, and Guild Wars is the only game that pumps over 75 degrees. I watch all of my games very closely, and have gone back and rechecked Doom 3, Half Life 2, and EQ2 over the past 24 hours to ensure that nothing has changed with my graphics card. I even dusted the thing. It only goes over 75 with Guild Wars, and WAY over 75 at that. At the high settings I have now (only shadows are cut down and AA is off) I pull average 35 fps in large outside zones. Inside I hit 75 fps. Either way, I top off heat at 92, which is in the red for the 6800 cards. That's 17 degrees hotter than ANY other game...

Celsius. I have 6 case fans, and my processor is running fine. I'm going to see if I can pick up a slot fan from Best Buy... I hope that helps. It's just weird that it's just happening in this game.

Wow, yeah, that is really hot. And very odd for a 6800 aswell. Try the slot fan and see how that goes. Good luck mate. Let us know if anything changes.

Will do. Had to order one since they didn't have anything in stock. Should have it Monday. Just took the side off my case and moved some stuff around (away from the card). I'm down to about 80 max in Guild Wars with the side off. Hopefully the slot fan will get me down to 80 with it on and 70-75 off. Then I will be happy... I did notice my exhaust fan is not really kicking out that much heat. I'm guess it's time for a replacement there. Still, it's strange that GW is the only game doing this.

The BFG cards come with a lifetime warrantee, so if all else fails...

I have the same issue.

I have a ATI x800 XT PE and while playing any other game, HL2 and Doom3 included. I always run at 1280x1024 unless the game wont allow it with 16xAF and 8xAA and all settings as high as they go.

Highest Temp that I have ever hit was 71c with 50c external temp, normally runs at 65c with 48c external during games. During Guildwars i have peaked at 82c with 54c external. Almost the same jump your getting. I wasnt really worring about it since ATI warrenties the card, also ATI says the normal op range for mine goes a little into 100+c (boiling, ouchies). Never seen it go above the 82c with guildwars tho

my x800 pro gets kinda of toasty i am thinkging about gettting a PCI slot fan to put below my agp card

Keep in mind there is a difference between CPU temperature and case temperature. The CPU typically runs significantly hotter than the case, and shouldn't effect the longevity of the 3d accelerator card.

I'm assuming that the people here are talking about video card temps and not CPU temps, correct? How do you monitor the card temp? After market thermocouples? Or do you have video cards with built in sensors? I don't think I've ever seen those. But then I don't have a high end video-card. Just curious. Add on temp sensors are notoriously flaky.

i have the same problem as you moon; i have a 9600xt, and it's only guildwars that cranks the temperature up; not only on my vidcard, but my entire system (you can actually feel it when you touch the case). It only happens when i play guild wars, and most of the time in summer, i have play in a/c or else i get the overheating error.

I'm having issues as well with my 6800GT, I can't play the game on full screen with all settings high. My cards temp will sore to 80-87 C. If it's full screen after some time (within 30 mins) the screen becomes scrambled. Other games I play do not have this problem. I'm using stock cooling.

You are kidding right? Geez, 87C should fry the card. Both mine only ever gets to 50C max with everything up full, and that's on any game including Guild Wars.

You have to remember video cards have a much higher tolerance to heat unlike cpu chips, my 7800 has a shut off temp of about 106 degs celcius, now dont get me wrong temps that high would alarm the heck out of me, but anything up to the shut off should cause too much bother.

Although OP's temps are in the 70's it wont damage the card, you could also replace the cooler on the card with an arctic cooler set up, very cheap, and quite easy to do, not only will it reduce your temps dramatically it'll also reduce noise levels too.

Im having the same problem as abacusn only now ican't even start my game it just crashes as soon as it loads and im running the 6600 GT OC is there a way to turn down in game graphics of something without loading the game or is my card screwed??

just curious - what kinda pc is this 6800 in, and is it the 128mb model?

i had my 6800 in my compaq pc and it worked fine but temp was up around the mid 70s, when i tried bf2 - no dice wouldnt work

moved card to other pc - an e-machines temp never goes over 60 now-

seems to be an issue with some MOBOs and these cards . . ..

the 6800 series has been known to run hot. normal temps are around (depending how well your case cooling is)
45-55 idle
55-75 load
