If I understood correctly, you were selling an item for 20 plat but accidentally accepted his offer which was 20 gold? Sorry, but there isn't really anything you can do.

Everyone, pay attention when trading, there are a lot of people that like to do this.

There's no cheat that changes traded gold value after you accept the trade. He just changed it to 20g right before you pressed accept, happens =/

if you hit accept and he changes it you have to hit accept again. so his trickery aside it's still ultimately up to you to make sure what you're buying. just like back when people would try to sell dye remover as red dye.

when refering to a computer never use the term "there is no"...there is always a way.

lmfao. That was spam, ayb.

Anyway, I think the original poster must have been mistaken. You always check before hitting accept right after someone has changed their items/cash value.

Yes, there are unethical, immoral people that play this game. That is why due diligence is key. The OP got taken because of lack of due diligence. It is his/her own fault. Learn from this.

Just posing a hypathetical...what if someone created a mouse/key macro that would quickly hit "modify offer" then type in 20g, then "submit offer" and "accept offer". If the macro went quickly enough and they timed it right (got lucky), then after you had decided it was okay and moved your mouse towards "Accept", they might hit the macro, causing the screen to flash for a sec but you might not see it happen or might not be able to tell your hand not to click in time and you click and presto you just go screwed.

Maybe it only works 1 in 50 attempts? But that is plenty for it to be a lucrative thing for a scammer to do.

So, yes, what the OP is claiming would indeed be possible. Whether or not this has happenned is something that cannot be proved given the evidence he has presented.

This would not be too different from the scam where they would try to cancel the trade just as you were placing an item in the box, causing it to drop to the ground and they would then scoop it up and run.

First you would need a 1gps Internet connection, and a mouse tracker on the trader computer, not happening.

Its hard i know, its anoying too...

but "live and learn". Next time you are gonna be more carefull. Also look at the glass half full. You traded a 20k item and not a Crystal Sword.

I was selling ectos the other thay a pack for 35 plat. The first buyer did the "change" offer move to 35 gold. I kindly told him he was mistaken, and canceled the trade.
Before i could count to 3, he was gone from the district lol, and i was on his ignore list.

There is no rush in selling, if its a real trader, it will leave you more than enough time to re-check your trade. If the guy is rushing you, you are better finding a new buyer/seller.

It's a pain to be scammed for sure but unless the scammer is using some illegal process to cheat you then it just comes down to his word against yours. At least you can learn from your mistake and that is something the scammer will most likely never do and as most of us know: what goes around comes around.

Well ANet fixed that scam. Try it out sometimes. Open a trade window with someone out on a mission. Then close the window and try to drop something on the ground. You get a little popup message asking you if you are sure you want to drop the item.

No you wouldn't. Regular ol' modem or broadband would work. I'm not saying the scammer would track the other person's computer. He would just do something like "wait 2 seconds then activate macro!" and hope that he does it just when the victim is going for the Accept button. 49 out of 50 times it won't work and he says something like "sorry just kidding" and moves on to the next potential victim. But if he did this for like an hour, eventually he would get lucky and time it just right and hey waddya know, he just made 20k-100k! Not a bad haul for an hour's scamming. Given what is out there, I would not be surprised if this sort of thing is being actively practiced today.

can you get banned for scamming anyway? Maybe somepeople like to Roleplay as a sneaky thief. Is this not allowed in guild wars?

I think she's refering to making a guess as to when the scamee would be moving the mouse onto accept; hence her reference to a 1 in 50 chance. Which makes this possible rather than probable, as she said. All you'd need, as pointed out, would be a proper mousing macro; which would make the change nearly instant on both sides, appearing to be a hiccup.

no one ever gets banned permanently for scamming, thats why they keep doing it, report whoever you want with whatever evidence you have, from what ive read the most that will happen is they may get temporary ban of a day or two

Personally, I'm not against any of this. What say someday a game comes out where things are as close to what real life may be, in a period style game such as GW, and things just happen.

- you go to trade, they drop out, the item drops to ground, they pick up and run (then you pull out a throwing dagger, because you are an outstanding member of the Thives Guild and a dagger is a tool of your profession, and make a nice throw catching the scammer beween the shoulder blades. Better get to your item before it runs off again.

- complete open country from end to end of the 'map', real life WTF, and picture you step into a tavern, join a group to go seek revenge on the Baron who stole some guy's sster away and has placed her into some slavery bond

- you wander, make friends, enemies, fight monsters in hordes and small groups, or solo, hide behind bushes to shake the demons following you after that battle at the mouth of their cave where half your party was killed.

- magic is everywhere, but you must learn to master it - LEARN, not just run to a Wizard, click a button, protect for 2 minutes from enemies and POOF! you now know magic.

- become aknight with the king's army to advance on another king's country, only to get lost on a recon mission - ending up near some cave where a bunch of bones are scattered about, hearing strange noises coming from within and succumbing to the same demons you barely escaped 6 months earlier

- you then find out that whe you die, you really do not die, but end up transported to another part of the known map (keep dieing and you just might get back to where you first started) - every where is a new learning experience within the same world

I could keep going, but you get the idea - an actual alternate world where crap happens and you deal with it. GW is a great game and until the kind of game I dream about comes around the bend, playing this is great fun - I just tend to mind my p's and q's while paying attention to my p's and g's

Besides ever salvage a gold item instead of ID it, by accident, twice - yup, that's me!

The thing that makes scamming suck and that we should not have to "just deal with it" is once the scam is done, you have no recourse. There are no police to goto. You can't grab the guy and physically force him to give the item/gold back. You cannot follow him out of town then ambush him. Basically the scams being worked take advantage of the limitations of the gaming constraints--these constraints exist so that towns are not full of a bunch of griefers running around and hacking down n00bs and stealing their meager posessions, which is what I understand happened in the PVP shards of UO. Heh that must have been a sight to see.

Check you screen before acceting. I highly doubt it magically switched to 20g. However the guy ripping you off should be banned. Dont need that kind of scum in the game.

There are low-lifes everywhere without morals. Don't be surprised if you get scammed. Scammers only care about themselves and never consider others in their actions. What goes around, comes around. I'm sure they will live long fulfilled lives [sarcastic].

As in real life, in gw you have to freedom to do whatever you want. And then pay the price for your actions. So you can roleplay a thief if you like, ripping off ppl but then there is a chance of getting caught. And the punishment for a thief is banning the account("death sentence"). Simple.

If I'm making a big trade, I ALWAYS take a bunch of screenshots during the process. That way if I do get scammed somehow there is a little bit of evidence to show with the report that I WILL make. Its against the EULA to do that crap. It might not make any difference I guess, but it gives me a sense of security. I've been lucky though, and have never been scammed, so I'm not really sure how it would work, lol.

Heh you're pretty much on your own in these games: screenies are meaningless as they can be photoshopped and the CSRs don't spend time carefully verifying their authenticities to settle disputes. Just don't get scammed, and take solace in the fact that at least you're not someone who tries to steal fake money in a computer game.
