I don't think it is, cuz the OP is running Intel.

As for temps, I ran Motherboard Monitor and my CPU isn't getting any hotter than it does normally... it's actually a lot cooler than when running CoH or Doom 3.

I'm talking to Tech support too... we just passed phase one (send them DxDiag info about my computer). Let's see where it goes from here.

I have the Same Problem Everyone is having .. Can play anywhere from 5 - 20 minutes in the Field.. However, Can stand in a town untill the next game comes out. dunno why this is, wish i knew.
I have a Freeze at first, Cant kill the screen or refresh the screen so i can send a report.
restarting the game (Without Restart If I Can) leads to only a faster crash, resulting in a computer restart.
have hardware monitor for cpu/video .. neither which are hot.
side case cover - removed for awhile now.
did the update of drivers .. EVERYTHING!
computer specs almost identical as the quote -

AMD 2600+ (even underclocked it to a 2400+)
Giga-Byte GA-A7N400 Pro2 Rev. 1.00 Bios F11 (Nforce2 Chipset)
120 Gb Maxtor 7200RPM
1 Gb PC3200 400Mhz
ATI Radeon 9600 XT 128Meg @ 8x setting -1024x768 .32 bit color
SoundBlaster Audigy2
5 Case Fans <-- sounds like a Jet Taking off when starting up.. LOL
580W Power Supply

only last thing i have not tried yet, breaking out my 80 gig drive with no OS and loading XP. trying that with all normal drivers and only GW. if that dont work, then im totally clueless.

I also have the same problem, i baught it from the store.

Specs:
Amd Athlon64 3400+ (1mb Clawhammer)
ASUS K8V SE Deluxe
1GB Corsair XMS PC4400
Sapphire Radeon X850 XT PE
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Limited Gamer Edition
9 fans, including vantec tornado on top of the cpu cooler and most others are 35cfm.
550w PSU, Aspire I belive.

I get around 43*C with this game on for the CPU temps (have a nice HS)

Just crashes/hangs/bsod/dies utterly and painfully.
I can play HL2, CS:S, KOTOR, NFSU, W3, fine, max details and all, not 1 problem.

heat isnt the problem, and i tried without sound, the game runs and never lags except for the occasional network lag but then all of a sudden freezes up.

Hi, i too have this problem. Never had a crash in any other games, including WoW, EQ2, HL2, etc.

Athlon XP 64 3400
1Gb Ram
200GB SATA Drive
5900 FX 128mb (Latest Drivers - Also freezes with older drivers)
SB Audigy 2 ZS

The game just randomly freezes and forces me to reboot, this happens about once and hour at random intervals.

Everybody here with an athlon64 (in the 1 case regular amd) system is having problems. It's a glitch with the game when it messes with the processer. That sucks hardcore....

I have just played 8 hours straight without crashes. I disabled my second monitor, that somehow fixed it (though that makes little sence to me)

I am noticing a constant in a lot of these posts, a lot of people are running amd chipsets, and audigy 2 soundcards, as I am.......What I am disappointed in is the fact that this is a pretty widespread problem, and that the developers have not put out a hotfix for this. I spent almost 85.00 for a collectors edition game that won't run for more than 15 minutes at a time. Not to mention tech support is almost completely nonexistent. If this is not fixed or at the very least, acknowledged as a problem with a promise of a fix, this will be the absolute last game I buy from NCSoft and Arenanet. The same files keep crashing, the files causing this have been identified, and the reports to the DEV's have been sent repetitively. They can not say at this point that they are "unaware". They could at least have some reasonable communication avenues to address these problems........but they don't.................................I run every other game I own including EQ2 on high settings, with no problems. No reason this should be so unstable at release..................................

I agree there is so many ppl having problems they know!!! I want to play my game with out crashes. It's not my computer! I have no problems with any other games. They should have known this problem all ready. I like the game now only if I could play longer then 5-30 mins long and switch my weapons with out crashes, or delete my weapons or sell my weapons.... errrrr! What fun can a game be if all it does is crash

Well i just spent a few hours formatting my PC. Installed every driver from the net so its the newest possible.

10 mins into my GW session and bam, it froze up requiring my to pull the power again :\

Im 100% sure its a problems with GW, i've played EQ2 and WoW for 6 months without a single crash. I even tried taking out my SB Audigy 2 as some guy suggested, but no joy.

Im baffled now, i guess we have to wait until they patch it. Or at least reply to my support requests.

Hey all. I'm having the same problem as well: game crashes, PC restarts, a single tear rolls down my cheek, etc.

The bitch of it is, I jumped the gun and bought a new ATI card that I couldn't exactly afford, and now it looks like it the problems lies elsewhere... oh, woe is me. My wallet weeps.

Hope they get this problem fixed soon. I tried looking for information on it, but the official site doesn't offer much in terms of tech support. Hey, has anyone gotten any type of official reply to this problem? Or is it more of a general stonewalling?

Or maybe they're just really busy... I suppose that's a possibility.

As I said, I hope this gets fixed pretty soon. I logged in today for a minute, and before the game crashed, I noticed my poor Warrior/Elementalist was sitting in a rocking chair and knitting a wool afgan. My necro is currently in councelling; apparently, he has abandonment issues, and the session fees are bleeding me dry.

I have the same problem and I don't have an athlon processor (pentium 4). So I doubt that has anything to do with it.

You're absolutely correct, to an extent. It seems like the problem to me is the Sound Blaster Sound Cards. Trust me on this, here's my story:

I bought a Dell computer about three years ago and after around 6 months I upgraded the video card and sound card. Ever since I did, I've been having this same problem, I'll be playing a game, surfing the internet, listening to music...and my computer will automatically restart.

So a few months go by and I save up some money, buy a new processor (switched to amd), new motherbord, and new RAM. Same problem. A few more months go by and I purchased a new Nvidia graphics card and a new hard-drive.

And to my surprise...same ****ing problem. I've completely ruled out voltage issues or heat because the power supply in my old Dell case is the same voltage in my brand new Asus case. It's not heat because I can monitor it on my case and no matter what I'm doing it stays relatively the same.

So, ever since I bought a Sound Blaster Audigy card I started to have this problem....I replaced every single piece of hardware in the computer and I'm still getting the same problem.

Just a few months ago I finally decided to trash the stupid thing because the onboard audio is 5.1 surround and works just as well...and low-and-behold...the problem stops.

It is NCSoft and Creative's problem. Try buying a new sound card or keep your fingers crossed for a patch. If it were me, I would just buy a new sound card. Good luck everyone.

My boyfriend is having the same problem with rebooting, although the only place it is occuring thus far is in the PvP character creator screen. Both times he's been messing with armor colors, and it reboots without warning. I tried the same thing on my laptop (thinking it was a bug having to do with the colors he chose), but no crash for me.

He created an RP character and played for about 30 minutes without problems. We both work in QA and all our troubleshooting hasn't helped...he has latest drivers, meets the specs, etc.

Has anyone else had this crash in the character creator? Also, will the GW site have its own tech forum rather than just a bunch of FAQs in forum format?

Good thing we still have WoW....no problems there.

The problem for most of us isn't with a sound card, because I get the same problem as the OP and I'm using on-board sound.

The problem is with the client and AMD chipsets, it would seem... and it's something that they've got to fix.

Or not. The beauty of it is that we're not paying monthly! Although having this many angry people will probably decrease expansion sales....

Rememdium YOU are exactly right... it is the chipsets... I've heard that a few times... so you figured it out along with others... so why doesnt GW atleast let us know they are doing something about it. I hope they do soon. I love the game and I dont want to stop playing it. Id wait a week or more if they needed to fix it NO big deal just would like to know what's going on....

this is quite a good site if you put in your ***STOP number then it will tell what will normaly cause that error and offers some ways to treat it, it is not much but i am desperate, so...it is worth a try if you are out of options like me, i am at the moment backing everything up before i format my disk .

but to be honist i think it is a problem with GWs code so in case you have not done it go to support.guildwars.com and send in a report on it so they know it is happening to a few people and give them as much info as you can to help them fix it.

Which AMD chipsets are you all using?

im using the K8T800 Pro, and with the Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS card....

hmm, im going to try and disable the sound and then play, is there a -nosound boot key for GW?

The problem isnt with soundcards because I have an on-board sound, again, it seems that most of us have amd chipsets (i have nforce 2)

Anywhow, I tried many fixes and nothing worked, BUT, someone told me to defrag my HD, and I did that - no crashes since - and I have played a solid 12 hours. =) So, My advice, defrag the HD your GW is installed on and see what happens - it worked for me!!!

Also, I did change one other thing, and Im not sure if this is what fixed it or the defragging, but I ran my memory timings VERY tight, 2,3,3,8, and I changed them to 2,3,3,11 , So I changed teh last memory timing from 8 to 11, I was reading somewhere that AMD chipsets ran better this way.. Either way, since I changed that timing and defragged I have had ZERO crashes, and I used to crash every 30 minutes... Give it a try all and see what happens!

Ill try that out, but for ram timings...anything over 8 for the TRAS is over excessive. (TRAS is the 4th #)

Shade, I know it sounds counterintuitive, but do a google search on RAM Timings and nforce2 or AMD chipsets and you will find that many people argue that 11 is better than even 5... give it a try, see what happen

I don't think it's defragging. To tell you the truth, I have no idea why people suggest defragging to fix any computer problem (besides slow disk access, though more so on non-NT OS). Defragging should fix no problems.

well, the 11 on the TRAS is better for nforce2 supposidly, but what about the other chipsets such as k8t800, etc.

Same problem, intel chipset here, not AMD. Latest drivers all around, no issues with any other games.

Symptoms: BSODs, hard reboots with no BSOD, snap shutoff with no reboot.

BSOD's have referenced Win32k.sys (no surprise there), NV4_disp.dll (part of the GeForce driver), and the scary one (once) NFTS.sys (that's hard drive, nooooo do NOT roach my drive).

Not a virus. Not spyware. Not heat. Not a memory problem (at least nothing I can find with testing). Not an old driver. Not old hardware.

It looks like it's the game. Or possibly SP2.

Run a DXDIAG on every machine that punts, run all the tests, save the results, and send it in to the techs, perhaps they can track down what all these machines have in common.

AMD 64 3500+
gig RAM
ASUS A8V Mobo
Nvidia 6800GT
AC'97 onboard sound

All drivers shiny

Started crashing once the game went live. This has nothing to do with anything but GW period. I run a backup utility and restored to my previous config and I have no issues until I install this game.

hmm, i just defraged, and set TRAS at 11.
For the first time it worked for an hour and half (1.5hrs)...but when i changed a visual setting in the game it BSOD, but not a regular BSOD, it just shut off and went blue. I'm going to try it again and see what happens.

This is the output of a minidump that happened awhile ago- seems Nvidia is the issue, though its still exclusive to GW:

************************************************** *****************************

* Bugcheck Analysis *
* *
************************************************** *****************************

UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP_M (1000007f)
This means a trap occurred in kernel mode, and it's a trap of a kind
that the kernel isn't allowed to have/catch (bound trap) or that
is always instant death (double fault). The first number in the
bugcheck params is the number of the trap (8 = double fault, etc)
Consult an Intel x86 family manual to learn more about what these
traps are. Here is a *portion* of those codes:
If kv shows a taskGate
use .tss on the part before the colon, then kv.
Else if kv shows a trapframe
use .trap on that value
Else
.trap on the appropriate frame will show where the trap was taken
(on x86, this will be the ebp that goes with the procedure KiTrap)
Endif
kb will then show the corrected stack.
Arguments:
Arg1: 00000008, EXCEPTION_DOUBLE_FAULT
Arg2: 80042000
Arg3: 00000000

Our problem is with Intel.

Although I've had Ath64/ATI/Soundblaster + game issues on my other machine with other products.

After another defrag, I'm getting consistently longer times too, but the same problem persists...

kinda hard to find a group when you've got this hanging over your head, huh?

so how about defragging before each play! That would be horrible AND annoying...

I wish i could just defrag that 1 directory...

OK, those having crashing problems, try running the game with the -nosound command line option. For those that don't know how to do this, right-click on your guild wars shortcut, go to properties, and change the Target field to something like this

"G:\Games\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -nosound

You'll have no sound, but just put on winamp or something in the background If that seems to fix the crashing issues, report it to tech support, it'll help the devs out a lot. There was a similar issue a while back with onboard NForce2 boards sound (sound would drop out, game would crash soon after), but that's since been resolved I believe.

Hope that helps.

Heyas, I have the same problem when I play Guild Wars (it seems to be Guild Wars only, no other games, even Half-Life 2, WoW and Doom 3 don't do this) quite often I will be playing and my monitor will go black and the little light will go red. I thought it might be my refresh rate so I turned it to default in-game and back to 60 on my desktop but that didn't fix it. I also tried running in Windowed mode.

I can't even get back to my desktop after this happens and am forced to shut off my computer by hand and turn it back on...

My Specs are:
P4 2.8ghz 800mhz FSB, GeForce 6800 128, Neo2 Mobo, 512 Ram, 120g HD.

I'll go ahead and run with no sound until it's fixed, thanks for the support on the topic thus far.

Well, that was interesting.

I was doing a mission where I had to kill a Charr boss (who was one level higher than I am). I couldn't do enough damage (he could heal himself) so it was basically a stalemate. I went back into town and got some henchmen (I won't group because of the crashing problem) and we proceed to take on the boss... mid fight (boss still alive, mind you) the game crashes... I come back after the reboot and the contact has a ! over his head.

Apparently, my henchmen completed my mission for me.

Just something to lighten the mood in this thread a bit.

Also getting this problem on my computer.
I'm using a Radeon 9600 so it can't be Nvidia exclusive.
I have not had this problem with any other games.

It's too bad, I'm really enjoying this game, but having my computer restart on me every 10 minutes isn't a good way to play.

The Nosound thing did not work for me either... I tried installing the new Omega Drivers but that didnt help. Gah!
