The "3rd axis" is already there. It's already being used by spells and missiles and emotes. I'd like to see how that discussion went down, would be good for laughs.
The only thing in your post that was close to correct was
being stuck, and yes there might be some issues with people getting wedged in places when they jump the wrong way, at first, over time those problem areas would be fixed (say during the beta like every other game with jumping, too late now though).

I'm quite sure he either was not being serious, or this was just one of many reasons he might not like the game. Nobody would not buy a game because it didn't have jumping. 0_o
