New Races...What's Your Opinion?

As everyone who plays Guild Wars knows, so far you can only play as one race... human. However, in other MMORPG's - actually I'll change that to other fantasy games - you can choose from many different races to play. Orc, Dwarf, Halfling, Undead, Tauren, Gnome, Elf, Half-Elf, Troll, Rat People, etc.

So why should GW be so limited in it's scope of races when other games have such a broad range to choose from? There's already plenty of good races in the GW universe that could possibly be used, so new races wouldn't have to be added. You could play as a Charr, or a Centaur, or maybe Undead. Also, depending on your race, maybe you'd be new skills, or prehaps different unique class attributes, or maybe some new sort of bonus system altogether.

I know already that the odds of this idea actually coming into play in the game are close to nothing, but I still think it'd be an interesting change of pace.

If you have any ideas for playable character races in Guild Wars, I'd be very interested to know them. And if you would give them anything different from the human race in the game, what would it be?

I'm very fond of the human only style. This may be just me, but I remember when Halo 2 came out and I had to play as a friggin' Covenant bastard. Screwed with my head for weeks.

No. Absolutely no. Let's not try to get them add a bunch of Tolkien-ripoff cliches to EVERY single fantasy game. Again, no.

I'd rather see more professions instead of some minor appearance modifications that do nothing to make the game more interesting. Stop it.

I'd like some new races. Humans are boring.

Playing as Mursaat would rock.

new race could be cool, but as long as its race that are already in the game, like dwarfs or Krytans.

I would much rather see new professions than races. 3 or 4 new professions is much more important than the typical cliche you get in fantasy games;

Dwarf (short and fat human)
Halfling (even shorter human)
Elf (tall human with big ears)

You see what I mean, it's just padding/eye candy. Much rather have real professions with skill sets. In fact I would rather see new weapons and armor than races.

But each races could have a specific bonus for a specific profession. But again, i dont think new races like elves or D&D stuffs should be used. Just keep the existing races. In fact, just adding ONE race like dwarf could make a huge difference. Sure, its lot of eye candy, but lot in this game is about that, i.e. haviong a nice armor, dying it etc etc

Wow. You definetely said "no" in some way or another a few too many times, but I am feeling your point there. Too many times "races" are just added to a game to make the appearance of the characters look different. Nothing really exciting is done in terms of gameplay, so it really is just eye candy. Not that I have anything wrong with eye candy, as so much of Guild Wars is just that. I often times take pictures of the gorgeous enviornments that GW has to offer just because it looks so darn good. I also feel that the character models in GW are the most gorgeous of any MMORPG out there.

But I digress. Firstly, they wouldn't have to the a-typical Tolkienesque races of elf, orc, dwarf. GW offers plenty of races as it is that are original and different from the status quo. Suggestions for the mursaat and charr have already been made, and I think that'd be pretty tight.

Further, new races could have new bonuses to them. For example, currently human warriors have the bonus attribute of "Strength", which gives them armor penetration as a passive ability. Maybe a charr warrior could instead have (umm...think think think...) "Fury", which affects how quickly they get adrenaline and allows for adrenaline to reduce the energy cost of certain warrior skills. By giving different races different class specific bonus attributes you could be creating almost an entirely new class! Almost...

As for your adding of classes, I couldn't agree more. GW's current classes are great, and almost perfectly fit into every concievable class there could be. (after all, there are 30 different class combos) But still I want more! However, this is neither the thread nor the time for discussing new classes. PvPX has begun! Wohoo!

I would like to see more skills, equipment, and another continent/world than more races.

EDIT: Yeah, people want more levels, but as A.Net has told, they want every player be equal in power, but in skills, is the player's decision.

On topic:
Personally, I don't see how being able to play other races would fit into the storyline. We're supposed to be from a human kingdom now defunct fighting for the survival of our people. There may have been stragglers and settlers of a few other races living in Ascalon, but the lore clearly states that Ascalon, Orr and Kryta were human kingdoms. Maybe Anet has some really interesting plot twists to make playing other races pertinent to the storyline, but right now I don't see it.

My personal wish is for the story to take us into Charr territory to kick some butt for killing Gwen. On second thought, maybe we should join up with them for that. We change allegiances every other mission anyway, why not join the Charr too?

Because Anet doesn't charge a monthly fee and they probably didn't have the resources build all that. You can't get something for nothing.

New races would just complicate the game further and mess up the storyline. Like, why would dwarves start out in Ascalon city? And to all these people wanting elves, gnomes, and other WoW ripoffs do you see them current in GW? If not, Anet will have to make new countries, new cities, etc. etc.

I agree with swampgirl, if you were to add more races to the game you would more than likely need to add in a whole new storylline - unless of course it was dwarves or Krytans or something else in game that could potentially be carried into the game to be consistant.

As for actually potentially adding something else in future expansions, I absolutely think they should. I agree with many of the people above - have race benefits/disadvantages. I guess I will just go off saying that I liked the whole different race aspect that DAOC had. But I love Guild Wars so and don't necessarily want it to be a copy of another game. So, I will hope for the best and just see what happens I guess....

You guys are making me laugh. I'm only talking about two people...but seriously...Krytans? You realize they are HUMANS! Thats not a new race...its a different skin color, which I might add, you can already change. You don't have to be a white person in this game...

Anyways, no, keep other races out of this game. Until some strange plot twist causes the Stone Summit to launch a powerful magic spell into the sky that turns all of Ascalon into Dwarves, no. And even then I'd find it stupid.

Just because other games have things does not mean this game should.

The problem with adding racial bonuses "to make it interesting" is as follows: If, to use the most sickening of RPG cliches, elves had some bonus to make them more effective archers, Rangers would be stupid to not pick elf as their race. If humans made better Warriors, anyone with a functioning frontal lobe would make a Human Warrior. Maximizing effectiveness is the smart thing to do if you want to win.

Therefore, having racial bonuses is a terrible idea in a competitive game. The corollary to this is that having different races is also pointless, since they do nothing other than look different, waste hard drive space, and cause ArenaNet's art people to spend their entire paychecks on Maalox. You may be thinking, "BUT BATS, WUT ABOUT TEH 1%K ARMOR THNE NOOB!!!!!!!!!11111eleven," and I will respond with the obvious fact that making an entire race is exponentially more work than making a new skin for an existing model, or modifying an existing model slightly for another armor design.

Races = bad idea.

It always seems that when a new game comes along that right away the requests for features other games have begins. It's no wonder most games seem all alike. I like the fact that GW took their own path and I see no need to copy the other games (that apparently most of us are tired of because they are the way they are). Let's end the EQ clone habit.

if any of ever read anything on the gw website they have always said they will probably have more races/classes as the expansions come out, and you people talk about stuff just being eye candy???? why is it the price of black dye went up so much?, or the reason a crappy dragonblade was worth 3k the first couple months?, most of the gw population desires eyecandy, and another thing, elves and dwarves were around in things long before EQ and WoW were ever thought of, so dont say GW would be copying them, because they certainly didnt invent them.

One thing this would allow is for any added race to have a natural +1 to one of their attributes. For example, a dwarf might have a +1 in hammer. In order to keep the cap of 200 attributes, they may also place a -1 on another attribute as default.

i don't think that new races would have any extra abilities over or above humans.

any new race, i think, will simply be the dominent race on Cantha (or wherever Chapter 2 is set) and will really just provide different models for people to look at.

i would be happy if you could play as the other intelligent races (like dwarves, centaurs and Tengu) however any race with a special ability would be a nono... so no Mursaat.

that would please me.

if they want to add new races.

not that it needs it.

Just my opinion....but I don't see it as a problem if we have races that have the same models as things already in the game. There are already dwarven models, charr models (although they a little on the large side, advantage + disadvantage), Mursaat (which are some of the more unique creatures I've seen) Undead, and you could even differentiate between human races (Krytans and Ascalonians).

As I think about it, you could make the racial parts of the race have something very basic...possibly good in many situations, but bad in others.

I understand the consequences, but for example: Charr size. Charr are bigger than other races...easier to hit, however can more easily body-block targets too. Honestly, they could even have a slight modifier to hp too. Yes, so far this makes them better for Warriors, but the hp increase would be good for anyone.

Also, weapons with +20% damage mods to Charr would suddenly be useful again (a creative way to more quickly take down someone on your off-hand)

small note here, the problem with having charr, and undead as usable characters is it wouldn't really fit in with the current story. like an invading race walking around in ascalon city before the wars been won?

and yes, i understand they could possibly add in a story to compensate for this, different starting locations, but alot of work for just eye candy.

Yeah i reckon it would be awesome to be able to invade charr country a little bit

I agree, we don't want this to be like eery other MMORPG, as soon as they Add elves evry man and his dog will want to be a pretty boy.

The one race I would love to see if Charr. This would be great for PvP, also it could be used to offer access to other areas of Pre-searing, as well as a way of offering differant ways to play the game.

Hey, a lot of like to dress up our characters. Having kewl looking characters is part of the fun of GW. That's why the dye trade is so profittable.

But as for your point about racial bonuses, I can definetely understand your point. In a lot of games, the racial bonuses are made so that one certain class inherently benefits from playing as that race. However, it is possible to make it so that every race has a different bonus for every class. For example, right now every class has their own unique primary attribute (Warriors: Strenght, Monks: Divine Prayers, Elementalists: Energy Storage, etc.) so one could view that as being the human player's bonus. Different races could have different primary unique class attributes that still give them some degree of power, but don't make one class the obvious choice for that race.

Yeah, that would be fun. Many players so far have pointed out that having seperate races would be difficult, as there is as of yet no seperate storyline to incorporate these other races. However, many of GW's missions already contain two or more other races besides human. It'd be very interesting to see the Great Wall mission from the Charr perspective, or maybe play as the undead in Divinity Coast. But still, the problem of a new storyline for the new races would remain, but I have faith in the good people at Arena Net. We need a new campaign to play anyways.
