Changing Focus: Fire Ele to ???
Lance Goodthrust
Hi everyone.
I've got a level 20 Ele/Mo that is very fire magic focused.
14 points in fire, 10 in energy storage and whatever else in healing prayers. I'm close to ascending and want to deal with this before I do.
I've noticed that Fire is a very popular way to go, and I'm getting a little bored of it.
I'm considering switching up to another element. I've looked over the skills and found comperable spells in each one.
Before I get rid of my refund points, runes and gear... does anyone have any insight as far as a good offensive alternative is? I mean, there's probably a reason why there's so many Fire elementalists, right?
I'm leaning towards air, due to the lightening attacks, however, earth does have the group attacks and air has benefits for slowing people down.
I'm playing 99.9% PvE.
Any insight would be really appreciated.
Thanks!

For PVE, there's a reason fire is so popular (as you guessed). I dunno, it depends on what you want to do. Earth or water are both viable alternatives, but they are both more defensive in nature than fire. Air... sucks in PVE, especially with the recent nerf to chain lightning.

Well, so far I'm really enjoying the change.
I've got 15 in Air, 10 or 11 in energy storage and 6 in healing prayers with 4 points to spare.
I seem to be dealing some pretty serious damage still and it's not confined to one area, like some of the fire spells.
I'm curious, what was done to chain lightening to change it? It seems to work pretty good for me.

the best element for eles is smiting. You get all the good smiting ele/mo skills in the desert anyhow. For pve just put a bunch of smite buffs on your warrior tank (make sure to stand outside his aggro bubble when he aggros stuff, makes it LOTS easier). Balthazar's Aura, Zealot's Fire, Aura of Restoration, Ether Renewal, Draw Conditions (was nerfed, but still good damage with zealot's), reversal of fortune. That leaves you two skill slots for things like earth wards or some prot things like aegis or something.
If you use fire, go ele/mes and arcane echo meteor shower FTW.

Air's best for taking out single targets one at a time usually. There are some AoE spells like whirlwind and lightning touch, but they aren't as good as fire nukes in PVE.

for PvE, I usually go Fire for all the nice AoE's. I have done well with Earth using Eruption, Earthquake, Stoning, Wards, and Smiting from monk Secondary.
I typically would cast Judge's Insight on a warrior, then cast nukes on groups. If their tanks get to the monks I drop Ward against Melee, If they have Casters, drop Ward against Elements.

To the OP: In PvE, you shouldn't hesitate to try different lines. You gain 1 refund point for every 250exp, so it's not that hard to switch from line to line given ample playing time. Since you're a E/Mo, you have the option of really going Air, Water, Earth, Fire and as Iraqalypse Now mentioned, Smite. Also, don't get "rid" of your gear or runes! Just store and save it for later so you can always switch back.

Dito, i have been a fire and air ele in pve and now i wear a 15k geomancer armor and just use earth skills. So try thinks out and you will find your way

Your armor doesn't give bonuses to elements, just protection. So unless you are swapping every rune, there is no point in new armor (except for better ones like Droknar/15k/Fissure).
Thanato
go water
you'll get a nice spammable skill once you get around to the snow again.
and it has nifty area attacks that also slow targets down~

I have an E/Mo also. Fire is the best Ele class for PvE because of Firestorm and the other spells. It is on the other hand one of the worst (being in competition with water) in PvP. THe reason being people are going to move out of the way of your AoEs unlss thay are stupid. I would suggest going with air if you are really going to switch over. If you are jsut going PvE then I'd say stick with fire. I would suggest goign to air until Perdition rock where you can cap Elemental Attunment (spells cost 50% less energy). Then switch to Earth. Earth is the best class it is also the hardest class to deal with (if you are using it correctly) because the massive mana it requires. It combines water and air into a massively powerful class. With Elemental Attunment and Earth Attunment (I'm guessing there is one I play air personally) thats 80% reduced spell cost, and YES they do stack. That is my $.02
Mystic_Karnas
Personally, I find having a hydromancer around in PvE to be quite useful, ward vs. harm is really nice, maelstrom owns caster mobs, blurred vision isn't bad vs. melee mobs, and it's just an overall nice PvE class.

These are all very valuable suggestions and excellent information.
Thanks a lot guys. I'm working on getting the Elemental Attunement skill, I think it's a few zones away before I can capture it.
Earth was looking tempting, as you mentioned Black Forsaken, it's got some powerful spells and decent buffing properties as well.
So far, Air has been pretty sweet to play, I'm doing decent damage and getting the hang of the recharge times. The AoE spells are nice and fast, perhaps not as powerful as Fire AoE, but again, even the PvE monsters will move out of your spell range on those drawn out AoE spells, making them useless.
Thanks for all the comments guys. You've been very helpful.
