I think having a similiar system can help balancing without having a heavy nerf on a single skill making 1 particular skill useless in all skill set...
The idea is quite simple, instead of tweaking the independent skill... you make the skill having side effect when another skill is presence within the skill bar. This way, combo that is too powerful can have a combo nerf... while some skills can recieve a boost for being independent without this skill go unbalance after it carry a side effect along with the boost.
EX1:
When protective bond + essense bond + balthazar's spirit are present within the a skill bar, Protective bond's energy cost per hit increase by 2-1.
EX2: (lets say lightning javalin got a boost to always interrupt and air magic had a -5% armor penetration nerf and now is only 20% AP)
When Lightning Strike, Lightning Javalin, Engraving Charge, Lightning Orb are present within a skill bar, Lightning Javalin will only interrupt when foe attack, and all lightning damage increase Amor penetration by 5%.
an idea: Skill Set Side Effect

It's a nice idea but its not practical and doesn't really make sense in gw.

suggesting nerfs makes me sick

Arcanis Imperium

wow, are you guys nuts? what have you been smoking??
didn't you see the "EX"? that stand for example?? I am trying to help people to understand my idea, and the best way was an example... at least I thought it was.
Obviously the real thing wouldn't be like that, and how the system goes will be completely up to one's imagination... so saying that, it is almost as if it is saying you guys have no imagination.

sounds like an alright idea to me and he wasn't saying that they should nerf the air spells AP at all.
I can see this working with only new skills created specifically for this purpose and they should be called synergist spells.
maybe my example will come up better---for those of you that have played diablo II think back to set items, you put on 3 peices and you get an inherent bonus, same goes with 2 pieces, 4 pieces, etc. So apply this idea to skills, apply 2 skills get an inherent bonus, 3 and get another one. Makes sense because taking up 3 spaces in your skill bar of a limited 8 is a very large price to pay for an inherent bonus which in itself gives this idea its so called "balance."
