Customizing Weapons, etc

What is the benefit of customizing weapons, etc? Does it just make the weapons look cool or add damage?

Customizing your weapon adds +20% damage to the weapon.

But remember noone else can use that weapon once you customized it so if you want to trade dont customize it.
