Identify

I have several 'unidentified' items now but no idea how to get them identified. Is there a specific npc that identifies stuff for you?

Also, in my search here for that answer I see people talking about 'salvaging' items. What does this mean and how is it done?

Thanks

Identification kits and salvage kits, now available at a merchant near you.

Salvaging converts an item into a raw material (carapace into shell, for example), and the raw materials are used in crafting at the crafter merchant to make new armor and such.

Before leaving pre-sear Ascalon, it'd be a good idea to have a lot of raw materials for armor-making available. See the crafting and armor guides on this site for how much of which materials you will need.

Perfect, thank you.

These kits are expensive however. If you are salvaging and identifying everything you come across you will find yourself out of money quickly. Correct me if I'm wrong but is there anything even worth identifying in pre-searing?

I've found that roughly 25-30% of the identified items turn out to be "precious" and thus are worth 20 gold to sell to the merchants, and justify the investment in the ID kits, over time. And occasionally I have found an item that actually is better than what I'm currently using, and so I switch and sell off the old.
