It's part of it, just a very SMALL part of it; sort of the initiation part. Once you go through the Academy, the bulk of Guild Wars will really begin.

Ahh... Ok, so is there a list of stuff I need to for sure accomplish before going on? Do all missions, side quests for people. What items to find, what skills to find for my elementalist/necro?

If i go on and dont get all my skills am I screwed?

No, at level 7, you'll do just fine when you cross over. And as long as you have what you've come to be comfortable with adventuring in the pre-sear area of Tyria, you shouldn't need to obtain anything more to stay alive in the post-sear area. You'll be buying new armor in post-sear Ascalon anyway.
