Theres been a rumor that these items will be removed as a reward, and there is still a way to do Smite runs in UW (solo monk that is) using these items.

this item was/probably still is worth 20k+. who ever said it isnt just never knew how much it was worth in the first place

They arent worth that much considering they are a quest item, just many people want them and either have done the quest and have sold the item, or they are lazy and would rather buy one (Not saying those are the only two types people).
