Well, farming I feel is based on luck. However, there are certain factors that I've been noticing as well.
Theories, truth, personal specification. These are my thoughts on farming.
1. Area. Obviously, the most hardest items you want, are at the most hardest places. Easier items, easier places. It depends if you want to take time killing hydras 2 at a time outside augory, or doing the Nolani Acadmey mission over and over, pulling the lever and hoping to get a silver dye every now and then. Remember when farming, you can always set a goal for yourself. You can either a. Sell the items you get and get cheap gold, or you'll want to be in the trade business. ie. Getting gold/purple items and selling them at least for 1k.
2. Melee or range. Going back to area, where you choose to farm is important. Either you want to deal with melee, or you'd think you'd go against range, or even both. Easiest place that I farm with a warrior/elem is N. Shiverpeaks. Casting firestorm on the sage, while fighting off melee and using phoenix. If you were to go out destiny's gorge and do the same thing with those centaurs, go right ahead. All melee, and you feel really confident in knowing what to do, the griphs outside droknars forge.
3. Using a skill for a last hit.
Now, I've been told that if you use a skill on the last hit to kill an enemy, your chances of getting a better item is raised. I've been doing that for awhile now and find that to be true. Most people will say its coincedental, or that's too iffy, but I say why not? It doesn't hurt. One, you get to finish off the enemy faster. Two, you get the item if they drop one. So it doesn't hurt to try.
Edit- Places where I farm
Outside yak's bend
Hydra's outside of augory rock, or fighting griphs
Centaurs outside Destiny's Gorge
Nolani's Academy (Mission) (Yah, if you want to discuss to me about it, I'll explain)
Around Droknar's Forge sometimes w/ henchies.

Actually, I feel that it's not the greatest
Because it takes a long time to get there. Nolani's Academy if you push the lever to open the gates is faster.
Just to let you know, there is a glitch to that, for more explaination about it, pm me.

this really shouldnt take more than 5 minutes per run depending on your build. what class are skills are you using?
Mavrik
I've found an awsome farming spot I can do with my lv14 warrior/monk but I fear if I tell, it will get nerfed. But I average 1-2k in money drops per pass through, have gotten many blue, purple and gold items and most of the enemies I kill, do -0 damage to me. And each kill gives me 64exp to 100exp. Easy leveling.
Little Thom's Bro
dont worry bout farming at augury for they drops are shits like griffon wings and minotaur horns wtf not even gold

I believe Nolani Academy got nerfed. the drops arent nearly what they used to be...
Alone)
No, they aren't what the used to be. But when I'm bored I go to Nolani's and have fun picking on the charr. I've gotten 1 black, 1 silver, 3 purple dye, 1 blue, and 2 red from that. But I can assure you, that was NOT in an hour. More like.... 4...helping people there.
And a lot of luck.
Gorge
sometimes i farm outside ventari's refuge

Another good place if you really want to is Henge of Denravi
Dualinity
Now with the new places and stuff, ppl think it is not possible to solo-uw, i am not going to tell anything about how, but it is still possible. I think smite crawlers and grasping probably have good drops (i havent farmed much yet). I have also done griffon farming which take about 3-5 minutes, but it is kinda boring. UW is most fun, and i found a gold icy falchion +15>50, enchants last 15% longer, (for those who dont know it, worth around 125k) that was after the change
Toad Healer
how about farming outside of Elona reach i fu go out side of there. the only bad thing is that thay have WAM so i smite. i like it there because theres almost no devouorers there and with smite w/mo its to hard to kill them.
Alone)
Elona's reach is great to go farming at. The only problem is if one accidently catches more groups than one can handle.
Any mission place is good to go farm at. Of course, some harder than others. Play it smart. And as usual, based on preference. If you like killing a whole lot in a short amount of time, but less likely rare drops, Ascalon. If you're up to it, farming griffs outside of DROKNARS FORGE. Now that's what I find hard to farm.
Edit: I meant to say the actual Elona Reach MISSION to farm. Outside of it? Bit boring for me.

Well, if you configure your 55 monk right, you can do the entire circle of augury rock and kill over 70 hydras in about 20/30 minutes. I can do about 10 at a time, and the hardest part is aggroing them into a decent group. The drops are ok, hydra claws sell for a decent amount (30 hydra claws per run isnt uncommon, and sells for 900 gold
) and theres often gold and purple items along with chest keys to pop open the occasional chest. Works out very well.
Note: After doing the first half (i take the northern half first), take the teleporter to get to the east most part of the southern half, and work your way back from there.
Often i go back to town before that because my inventory is full :P

Hehe. I can only take on max 3 hydras at a time with my warrior.
Shusky
I can totally own 3 minotaurs on a good day with my Ranger.
Mavrik
I take on 5-8 minotaurs at a time with my warrior outside Ice Caves on way to Beacon Perch.
Taking into account of what some people were saying, I decided to perform a little test. Taking on one herd of minotaur, I decided to kill them all with just my regular striking, no skills. Out of the 6 of them, 4 dropped money, one dropped a horn and one dropped a hide.
Next group of minotaur, I fought them one at a time, using Final Thrust as my kill skill. Out of the 8 of them, 3 dropped money, one dropped a purple hammer, one dropped a blue bow and one dropped a white shield. one horn and one hide. Way better then the first group IMO.
Thinking it might have been luck, I tried again against the next group of minotaur. There was 6 of them. Using Final Thrust again, I got one purple bow, one horn, one blue sword, one white sword and 2 dropped gold.
I've decided to make sure I can use a skill for the death blow from this point on. From the money and drops I sold, for small time farming I made almost 2k. And it only took me an hour. I'm going to wait till I get more skills, then head off to the desert for some farming there.

As I've stated in a previous post before, that I feel there is a higher chance of getting an item when using a skill to finish off an enemy.

I remember someone posting an image on his day of farming griffs. Showed all items gold. And I'm sure he just dropped a bunch of his things.
Now, since the update, they have nerfed a lot of things. If that person did have all gold items from about 8 griffs, won't be happening anymore.
These are pics of me trying to aggro almost everything I can find while staying away from Devourer's:

I feel this is wrong. Just because we don't post it, doesn't mean Anet doesn't know about it. Hundreds of people know different places, and it doesn't have to be posted on here to be nerfed. The places I've been farming and I've never told before have been nerfed before.
