Axes (with high axe mastery) > Swords (with any mastery) 
I still can't say swords suck because at low mastery they do more DPS than axes at low mastery, and I also started out with a sword.

Dragon Slash ftw. Being able to deal +40 damage on every hit > Axes. However, axes work well with kiting foes as well as being able to spike better. They both have their cons and pros.

What I meant was that having a high amount of attributes in axe mastery does more critical hits and more DPS than a sword, it has nothing to do with the requirement on the weapon.

Actually, in terms of DPS, it goes like this:
Hammer > Sword > Axe
