No, it's worthless AFAIK. I noticed a lot of quests would drop quest items - even AFTER I had completed the quest. I had like 5 bear pelts drop even though I had done the Thom's Cloak mission an hour earlier.

Ya know, when I was bumming around pre-searing, I was constantly wishing that something would kill that annoying little twerp. But if she really IS dead now, that makes me sad.

At least that's what she does for me, pre-searing. Consequently, I don't find her annoying anymore and let her follow me around everywhere.

there are two stages to the game. The "searing" seperates these two stages. You begin the game in pre-searing stage. Thats as much as I'll say without spoiling it.

I just found one broken flute. But, when I went to the vendor to buy her a new flute, I accidentally pressed the flute button twice and bought two of them. I was unable to sell one back to the vendor. I pressed the sell button (and yes it was enabled for selling) but nothing happened.

from a story aspect, I haven't seen anything as discussed as Gwen. I'm positive that if they don't do it in a streaming update then they'll definately have her play a key role in the new expansion pack.

To get into the underworld you go to the Temple of the Ages, form a party (no henchies), kneel infront of Grenth's statue, and talk to Voice of Grenth.
Alternatively if you are near a grenth temple you can access them there as well, just easier at the temple because you can warp to it.
EDIT --- oh yeah and Gwen doesn't strike me as the warrior type
