Well, I don't plan on dancing with the Stone Summit, not even the women, so see no need to pay for the music.

That login was a one-time connection to download one of the DRM licenses for your computer, that's all. Once a DRM license is downloaded, you can play it on that computer an infinite number of times without being online.

And yes, I bought the V2 expansion, and will be purchasing the future battle pack as well.

And that's where I created this discussion to see where people stand with companies trying to tell them how they can use their audio files. I know how to rip these tracks to MP3 and such, but I don't feel that I should be bothered with it. It's a matter of principle. I'm opposed to this, because I look at the big picture and not just how a technology might inconvenience me in the short term. I must admit, the amount of people having no issue with DRM, even in this setting, is surprising. But that will likely change. So far, DRM only hurts consumers and not pirates. Some large corporations have been pushing for hardware DRM, as well. Right now, you have a choice, but if you keep giving in, you may lose that choice. And if companies are allowed to dictate the choices of consumers, who wins? Time will tell, I suppose.
Sadly, years and years of increasingly draconian (and equally useless) copy protection methods have proven that the companies are going to continue to produce it whether you actually buy it or not. They just blame the content itself for the problem. Nobody bought some game because the copy protection never recognized the CD? As far as the publisher is concerned, it's because the game sucked or wasn't marketable enough. Copy protection is not even considered as a possibility.

I have winamp and approx 4gb of mp3s, so I dont feel the need to activate the minipak, buy extra songs, etc..

I typically like soundtrack music, but this idea is kind of dumb.

Make a google search for "wav to mp3" should fix your problem

Dumb? Because they offer it on a different medium at a cheaper price? They will be offering game score music comparable to film score music on CDs at the stores, but at a more inexpensive price (as much as 1/3 the price!) due to no production costs in CD manufacturing. The license allows you to burn it to CD yourself. Heck, they even provide an image file for you to print out a CD liner yourself! Dumb? Riiiiight.

Pay for more in-game music? Yeah sorry but I don't think so, that's a stupid idea. I just signed up for an account there so I could get the free shit. (And the free mini-pack actually has some decent GW music in it), but PAYING for more? Yeah, don't think so. If I cared that much about new music for a game I'd find it myself for free.

I don't like the game music in there now, and I'm not bound to like it any more later.

Please read my original post, as I did state that this was not an issue for me. Forgive me for attempting to place myself in the shoes of the average consumer and begin to raise questions as such...

Would buy it but can't thanks to DRM. I am running GW under Linux, not Windows. I don't have Windows Media Player.

Why not just make a new account with a different email?

The only time I really EVER want to hear music in a game I'm playing is during the cinematics. During actual gameplay, I'd much rather hear all the great ambient effects and focus on the immersion aspect (and I've never been a fan of Walkmen, so I suppose the idea of carrying out one's day to day chores to an orchestral score just doesn't work for me, hence, not immersive).

During a cinematic, on the other hand, I'm completely the opposite. Music can really set off the on-screen action, and the composer can work with the cinematic to get the scoring just right.

Sadly, so few devs (ANet included) seem to understand that it pretty much spoils the effect of the cinematic if you let the user turn off the music. We wind up with these very awkward silences and pregnant pauses in the dialogue because from a 'directorial' standpoint, it was more effective to show a few scenes without dialogue set to the game's score... BOO! Just force it on during the cutscenes or give me a separate slider.

So will I buy this? Nope. But I actually really like some of the music from Guild Wars, so they'd sell it to me if these tracks were only for the cinematics..

nevergonnahappen :|

And I'm pretty sure the DRM nonsense would put me off otherwise. Got better things to do with my time than pirate my OWN music tracks just so I can play them where I want, thanks.

Allows you to burn to CD... (hrmmm what can you do with a CD??) Enlighten me... Bah 5.99 is peanuts for close to 100 minutes of music. Do you think these people work for free. This same sh*t happens to me at work, people normally assume its THEIR RIGHT to have things for free.

I just tried to register my FREE Dell Jukebox 9.0. Even though it was the FREE version they wanted me to put in my credit card in case I wanted to download songs in the future. Why can't I give them that info WHEN/IF I download music? I canceled the registration. That pissed me off.

Now for Guild Wars Free music. They did not ask me for my Credit card. I thought Arena-Net did NOTHING wrong here. They are giving you FREE music and a option to purchase more music if you so desire. The Music was actually pretty good. When we got to Sorrows Furnace it kicked in. I liked it. I have never bought any music online. However, I just might buy this. Why? It is a quality product for one. Also it is a good way to support Arena-Net. How many of you support Free-Ware software? Like Spy-bot? No different here. The price is not bad. $6.00...Big F'ing Deal!

You can not blame Arena-Net for offering something. It is a smart business decision on their part to make a few extra coins. It is totally optional. They are not making you put this on your computer. You can decline it, or simply just not click on it.

Why are people complaining about this? Is this all they do in life is Piss & Moan about every little thing? You don't want it on your computer, then don't download it. If you downloaded it and you don't like it, then uninstall it. Some people here take this stuff way too seriously.

You want something to really complain about, then call, write your Congressman. Tell Him/Her to Nerf the Head of FEMA. Get someone QUALIFIED to run FEMA!

1) The music is real cheap. If you like it, why not support the composer and buy it.
2) Am I the only one who find the new music horribly annoying? It sounds like the soundtrack from an action movie like The Rock or X-Men - completely inappropriate for a fantasy setting. IMO.
Me, I'll remove it & pop Dargaard in the CD again. _That's_ suitable & ominous music.
3) DRM is evil. The DRM of this music is no exception.

Most people here weren't complaining about the price, they were complaing about the DRM shackles that come with the music. Yes, I am perfectly aware that a CD can be ripped again and doing so is perfectly legal, too. Which makes me somewhat wonder why the DRM crap is in there in the first place.
