New chest farming method [MERGED]
noblepaladin
I tried using my warrior monk with a running build and started to hunt for shiverpeak chests, because I wanted to try out using those keys that I can buy at the merchants. However, I found that it's very easy to run to chests and have a very good shot at getting a gold item. I already unlocked 4 different weapon parts and 5 runes, and salvaged some very useful parts. Seems quite abusive to me (unless questing in Sorrows Furnace can give much better stuff, haven't got that far yet). It's easy to farm enough gold to buy these keys and get gold items (and farming may result in gold items too), so farming may be back.
I stopped running becaues I want to check out the new content, but so far this seems to be the best way of getting gold items.

I agree.
To a farmer, 400g for a key is like nothing, and now the chests are guaranteed to have good stuff in them.
I unlocked one chest on my way to Grenth's Footprint with my team of henchmen and got a pruple armour piece which had a minor air rune.

But now with the new Green items, and alot more gold items for all, prices on trades will drop, making farming gold items, not as profitable.
One and Two
they just about killed the point of farming
knoll
I think killing it was the point to making thing more easy to get.
Kai Nui
They just made it more fun now that they added keys... now if only they just added a keyring to put all the keys on... like an extra slot that could hold only keys and stuff.
Aracos79
I think this was exactly the point. Sure "farming" chests may be easier, but now just about anyone can do it, and with a guarantee of a nice reward. I only did two chests tonight (gotta get up early tomorrow ) but one was a max-dmg gold axe that unlocked two mods for me. If I can get a reward like that one out of every 3 or 4 chests... that's an easy decision for me. No more playing the market, just buy keys and let the unlocks roll.
Phaedrus
Here's the problem: MOST times the item you get from a chest isn't worth the amount a key is worth. I've gotten two purple items with no mods. That's silly, why are purple items with no mods even in the game?
Right now the new items (keys, superior kits) aren't really worth the amount of gold we're being charged. They're sane if you were a farmer who has thousands of plats spare. Some of us aren't that, so chests are a serious crapshoot.

Notice this also temporarily kills chest farming bots, until they crack the random algorithm for chest distribution, if ever. Meanwhile, actual players are rewarded with nicer items.

It is a gold leak. As the new skill prices and so on...but I have to agree it is made damn well. :P

i just hope there wont be too much gold floating around...

and that was worth 600 gold?

I wonder how many people neglected to buy keys on their way to the new zone? lol
Kai Nui
Yes... I think it'd be wise to buy about 5 shiverpeak keys or so. Shiverpeaks and UW keys are probably the most used.

Lots I'm sure, first mission I did with a group, I was the only one with keys so I got the loot out of 3 chests all by myself.
A potential problem I see here though is what happens when more than one of your party members has keys and you are all running for the same chest? Kind of silly when you end up fighting over who gets the chest or it turns into a race to get to a chest right in the middle of a battle just because someone doesn't want to risk losing the chest to someone else.

:Edit:
Oh yeah, it's the link from the front page of GWG that directs you to the IGN preview. If you read this, it explains how the keys/chests idea works:

I had a buddy unlock a 3/1 vampirc tonight. I've been playing for months and not seen one dropped. It's worth it right there.
Kai Nui
What happens is once you use a key on a chest, it's looted for you. It closes back and then someone else can loot it too.

What happens to the key afterwards? Does it only last until you've unlocked your first chest for that area, or can you use it for all chests in that area?

Sorry... I could have bought the rune cheaper, and a purple item with no mods is not really a purple.
Luckly I didn't ID the armor the rune came out of and traded it to a guildmate. He got an unlock out of it that I already had. In exchange he gave me a so-so gold item... I've seen much better, and I would classify the item he gave me as a borderline purple.
I understand the purpose of keys, and I like the idea... but if this is what I'll get for my money, then I won't be wasting my time...

gold sink? look at guild invites...looks like all those people who hated those random damn invites got their wish.
TideSwayer
Also, rare armors drop from chests sometimes as well. So these chests can also be good for unlocking runes.
One and Two
true. although if you truly wanna unlock stuff, just play pvp.

Good for both unlocking and for those people who want their RP characters to have the max damage perfect mod items.

I'm a casual player. It took me, since launch till now, all this time to get up to 50 plat. This is with buying armor in between and spending on going into UW and FoW... buying a guild and capes... a few nice weapons...
At 600 a pop for, basically, crap items... it really isn't worth it. If the idea is to give us a chance to get unlocks, then that's what should be in these chests. Not no-mod "so-called" purple items. The items I trade with my guild mate for was gold, but it had no unlockable mods on it, only a casting speed mod.
So this is a gold sink, sure... and I understand and agree with it. It also keeps chest bots out of the game. The gambling aspect is even interesting... I may get an item I've already unlocked. If I'm going to be paying for it, I'd like it to actually be worth it... I don't care if the ITEM is worth more than 600 gp... I want the chance to get the unlocks this was supposed to be for...

Exactly... and of the two items I did get, only one had that chance. What I traded for from a guildie who spent his 600 to buy a key was ANOTHER item that had no unlock chances. He got the unlock that was originally meant for me.
So for our 1800 GP combined, we got one unlock chance. That's not helpful... that's a terrible gamble. If only 1 in 3 items are unlock chances, then it's really not worth the trouble.

I like the new setup and will continue to buy keys for the same reason I waste two dollars on two lottery tickets each week. I might hit the jackpot. And if I don't? New players who join our guild have awesome starter equipment.
The fact is, all of us who have been playing since release or even since two months ago, already have working equipment. My offhand icon for my monk? A regular old +12 white one. Why? It works, so why kill myself to find a better one for PvE? PvP is where it matters and they have the best stuff there already for custom characters.
Before you could farm and get all white items or blue items. Now you are guaranteed purple or better. That timesaver is worth 600 clams to me since I could possibly unlock new PvP stuff.
A-Net. Usually I'm a skeptic, but you guys really did a great job with this update that will only help the game. Somewhere in China some guy just lost out on profits big time.

The new method is fun, I'm pretty sure the old system wasn't even all there was meant to be as you noticed Anet continually tried to stop people farming monsters.

- What would other players have charged you for the same item should you have tried to purchase it? Is that worth buying a key and finding it yourself to you?
- Keys also drop from monsters, my guess is that for every chest a monster nearby will drop a key. Not sure but it would be a logical thing to do. This way you are sort-off forced to clear the area of monsters to open a chest ... which is good.
- What is the value of unlocking? Is it worth purchasing keys? Seeing prices of unID items i think for most ppl it will be.

Is it just me or do all of the items that come from the chests have a 13 req? I've seen about 20-30 items from chests so far and all of the non-armor drops had a 13 req...
Thunder Thyze
Dude.... the key cost 400g. And the minor rune is worth, what 25g? Unsalvaged...50g? Do the maths.... you need GOOD dropd to make a profit here!

At 10:33, right after I signed on from the update, I went and bought 250 of each key. I'm so horribly addicted to this game.
Numa Pompilius
Well, after a short run through the desert I'd opened 8 chests. There's tons of chests around, and they all yield a gold or purple item. Not a single one of which was worth the cost of the key. The chests are simply a gold sink, basically a one-shot weapons vendor.
But they will flood the player-to-player market with gold & purple items, which that farming basically is dead as a means of generating money.
As guild wars never had a problem with people having too much money, only a problem with people having too much & too good gear, the drastically increased drop rate was not, IMO, the smartest move they could have made. Well, not for us PvE'ers anyway.
In fact, I'm not sure just how one IS supposed to generate money now. It really was easy before, despite the whining, but now... I don't know.
