Regarding Rubies and Saphirres

I hate to jump to conclusions, but all signs point to them having no use whatsoever, even with the new update. Having explored, what I believe, a vast majority of the Furnace, I didn't come upon a single NPC mentioning anything about rubies. There's also a rampant dash to the vendor to sell rubies, as can be seen by the availability and price of them now. So.... does anyone know if they have a use now or are they just merchant food?

Well that's the problem with speculation. You take a great risk for a possible great reward. It didn't work out for those people this time.

I saw someone selling Rubies for 9k each in Lion's Arch before the update yesterday. The irony would be if rubies would be used in a way that make the high prices seem silly.

I have 40 rubies and 33 sapphires burning a hole in my character's pocket at the moment.
Luckily, I also have 1 million gold doing the same ^_^ so I don't feel bad either way.
But really, I do hope that the gems will come in handy somehow, and in a way to improve gameplay, such as:
1) temporary blade tempering a la Legend of Zelda
2) custom item design (weapon, armor, etc)
3) consume one for a fast 200hp heal ^_^ during battle (in PVE). LOL hope they're not too big
4) use to pay for permanent skeleton keys for new chests
5) use to buy furniture and houses and other improvements to Guild Halls
etc.
So, where did they say you could get Halo Spartan armor crafted again? I've been saving up all my green dye ^^

Gaile already said they'll be used for something and to hold on to them. I won't be selling mine.

Yes I had none so I just now went to the merchant and bought 42 rubies and 28 sapphires while they are cheap so now I have my stockpile!

...I think they are just going to increase the market price to vendors just so they earn you more physical gold when you click "sell". I don't honestly see Anet doing anything greater than that just because the playerbase assumes that they should and will do something.

I thought Rubies and Sapphires were what you bought when you'd maxed out your storage. They're like erm... banknotes, or gold reserves, or... erm... that Swiss bank account or something. I mean, when you have 1,000 plat in the storage, and you're still making money, you need to somehow "store the wealth" and it seems the gemstones are the ideal way to do this.

I hope they are used for Mesmer armors, that would be cool. Watch its value go down to nothing even though they are for a very rare armor.

i've hoarded rubies and sapphires ever since i first found one hehe. i just like gems =) in game and in real life. started buying them when people would eagerly sell them for 2.5-3K each. w/ more than 250 total rubies and sapphires i don't care what they're worth. it's sort of like my aspiration to reach a pile of 250 monstrous eyes! only 30 to go.. hehe
