Item flood
TomD22
Is it just me, or are the new chests going to flood the game with gold items? During today, just by buying 5 keys (and having one dropped for me) and opening 6 random chests i have acquired 4 gold weapons and two blue. Only one of those was a 'worthless' one that combined unlikely bonuses. In addition, i have picked up endless white and blue max damage weapons (mainly staffs), some of which are roughly equivalent to the weapon my character is using, which i had to search around ppl selling to get about a month ago. Surely availability like this is going to drive prices down, and mean that every newb in ascalon with have a max damage, and everyone after then will have a gold weapon.
I mean, from my experience today, it seems that you can buy a key, walk for about 5 or 10 mins at the max before a chest shows up, and be pretty sure of getting a gold weapon out of it. I would have gotten even more today if i had been buying enough keys to open every chest i found.
Thinking about it, though, i suppose that this effect is gonna be offset by a new level of even better weapons - the green ones.

The idea behind the good item flood is to promote cooperation (rather than solo farming) through the storyline, a push towards tactical skill use, and promotion of pvp. The second point pushes both storyline and pvp because it enforces teamplay. As many, many people have said, this is ANet's ideal - a relaxed, cooperative experience focusing on skill and tactics.
At least, I thnk that's what they want....

Solo farming is something that some people enjoy. A perfect weapon does not make up for lack of skill and a large number of people don't like PvP.

if they dont like pvp, they should not be playing guild wars, because it is not even a mmorph, it is much more of a pvp game

Not only that, but they are tricking you into PAYING for your unlocks, where before you could just quest for them. Now you're "guaranteed" a good item (not really true, but whatever) for your money. It's a form of gambling.

That would be true, except that a) They drop IDed, which means no unlocks and b) you can't salvage them. They have some max stats, but that's it.

I won't be... not until they fix the items coming out of these things. Again I say a purple max damage weapon with a 10 req and no mods is NOT a purple. It's a waste of a good key. Gambling is one thing... but that doesn't belong in the game at all.

At least, I thnk that's what they want.... Yes and they are jackasses for doing so! They are twisting people arms trying to force them the play the way they Anet want them to play. They do not want anyone to solo, not even with henches, the drop ratio is deliberately poor with henches for that very reason. Forcing people to group sucks because PUB groups suck, never stay together for long, either get dropped or just quit, argue with each other, do stupid stuff like agro more than one group either by accident or on purpose, in general make playing in PUB groups miserable. I think maybe 1 out of every 30 pub groups I do go with is actually ends up being good and that is pathetic. Forboding Angel

I went last night with henchies (not doing quests) to sorrows furnace, and killed about 1/3 of the things in there (60% dp sucks) and got tons of great gold items. Try it before flaming. PLUS chests is where the real loot comes from. Anything else is just gravy. Loviatar

I think they should put in some soloable areas (or adjust some existing areas) with very rare but cool looking weapons, maybe with special effects. People who want to farm could farm these all day long and they could even sell them for big money.

I just "talked" to a guy at the Lion's Arch with a green bow: max damage, health +30, regen +1... Jeeez. I wish I had found this item. It was not in a chest, he told me, but on a dead foe.

All the green items drop from the new bosses in Sorrow's Furnace. They drop with the exact same stats every time, so yes, you can get one too. Wait a week and the game will be flooded with them.

Well if you think about it, if all the drops went to you when you played with hench, that's hardly an incentive to go with a group is it? more people would just play with hench only to get the better drops. PUB groups are for the most part crap, but if you have a good leader with a sensible selection process you can cobble together a good team with a little time, and if you have a guild then the problem is usually non-existant. stumpy
i hate travelling with the hench because they are higher up in Anet's drop determination ... (maybe cause they do more damage, heal more players, and utilize their skill) ... I just sit there and smile, and have a beer.

This update definitely accomplished their first agenda, and that was nerfing the farming bots. There is no need for anybody to go and buy E-bay money, so now they can have that weapon they couldn't afford. Second, new players can now afford to buy a decent item because the value is much lower on decent 14%>50 type items. Lastly, all the solo farmers are now grouping to find these new elite green items or chest farm. They definitely accomplished everything in one shot. My only problem is that unless ecto drops are dramatically increased they will be nearly un-obtainable in a group. Haven't been there since the update, so I'm not sure how it's been.
I haven't found a perfect 15%>50 low req. weapon from the new chests yet (I've used almost 35 keys so far), can anybody confirm if they drop? If not, the perfect gold item market should still be strong. Exarch0
If the ANET's goal is to increase teaming and cooperative play, fiddling with drop rates and access to quality items seems like a very inefficient way to do it. Wouldn't it be more logical that they would make teaming with other players mandatory (i.e., no henchman, and you can't leave town or be in explorable areas alone)?
It seems to me that increasing player access to gold and purple items through the chests is to create a gold sink through the purchase of keys, limit the ability of bots to farm chests, and make the chests something of value. Prior to the update, I hated finding a chest or wreckage that gave me nothing, a few gold coins or a weapon that was worth more as salvage, and I never had a chest or wreckage give me more than a blue weapon. Ex Animo
lol , before all complain about how they dont get drops , now its too much ,, it will be hard finding the midle ...
n0b of doom
Actually keys are a gold sink. Why do you think they also decided to give us more skill points but charge 1 plat to use them? Cause they want to take mass gold out of the economy.
TomD22
The points about encouraging co-op play, and about the chests being a gold sink are valid. What i was really whinging a little about is the fact that very very good weapons will be easily available to all...which takes the pleasure out of getting them. I know GW is not a traditional mmoRPG, but even so, a lot of the fun has been developing you character, and getting them to the best state possible (IMO not much other reason to play once the storyline quests are done and you are lvl 20 - i'm not really a PVPer). Getting the best weapon possible was a big part of this, but now getting nearly the best weapon possible is going to be easy right from the start of the game. For me, that detracts from the pleasure of actually owning one.

Logical maybe, if they wanted large numbers of players to leave the game..

Not exactly;
I have seen the green shields and green axes go for 500k-1 freaking million already which is absurd but will keep Ebay gold sellers in bussiness. MSecorsky

Logical maybe, if they wanted large numbers of players to leave the game.. Hey, the fight to Grenth's alone netted me over 2K gold in a full group on gold drops. The whites in the new areas sell for at least 50 gold at the merchant... it adds up fast. There's plenty of gold out there for the taking. You just need to take it off of things. The high prices on greens will crash quickly, the market will soon have plenty. Talik
Not be sound out of place, but I'm clueless as to the cost of these keys ..
Ive been stuck of GW for atleast a week due to computer repairs .. Shitty timing.. Thanks in advance. Kaospryx
There's different keys for each area. Shiverpeak and Ring of Fire keys are 600 each, Miner's are 750, and I think UW and FoW keys are 1.5k each.

The box says it will be based on the player's skill level, not hours played. We were playing for hours trying to get money to buy a good weapon or what not, but now that we're getting them easy, just pick up a few keys and go around and you'll get something really good. I've unlocked a lot of runes in the past few days aswell. Keys are like the PVP alternative to faction. I completely love all the new changes, it's made this game more of what I thought it should be. In Grenths Footprint the area isn't just walking along a path and killing stuff, but it's a playing field that weaves in and out of itself and then connects to the new Sorrow's Furnace which is like the dungeon we've been waiting for like the Catacombs were. This game is really shaping up to be great, and having the rarer items more common is allowing this game to be fun for once.

i buy my keys 3 at a time. I know that i have a 99% chance that the item i get WILL NOT be worth as much as i spent on the key. but i must unlock all chests, its an obsession! i dont care if the item is worth less then the key itself. i will make it up in $$ from monster drops on the way to the chests.

If Anet is trying to force people into the PvP arena I would guess they are going to lose about 80% of the guys playing the game now.
PvP stinks unless you are already well established, any newplayers that try to get in quickly see that. Even when they join a supposed great guild they are not allowed to get on the 'A" PvP team, they are force to the JV squad and unreated GvG battles. The people that are in the Tombs and HoH are the same exact teams over and over again, Hell I can even identify the Korean symbols now because I see the same ones winning over and over again. That is why PvP sucks for a lot of people. They can't get a gold(good) weapon, they can't get on a good team. Same story different plot. Anet is basically trying to make it fun for the newer people. Unfortunately they fail to realize that the newer players are clueless to the hierarchy of the game as a whole, most are happy to quest and do the story line the first time thru. What they need to do is something to keep the players that have done everything happy. This update was a decent first step, but I have already done most of the newer quests already, so it tok be about 2 weeks less than I thought it would. So once I do the very last quest then what? BAck to the same old same old. Solo farming was what I used to do. But if I am not going to get any coloered drops what good is it going to do? Not even talking about making money (I have almost the max amount now) but talking about the excitement of having a nice drop and iding it. I know the chest do that, but I KNOW I am going to get something there, and I PAID for it. Granted 700 isn't much, but I still paid for it. Not to mention that 75% of my chest drops are armors now. I probably will buy up all the jewels I can and sink my gold that way. Put the game away for a few months and buy the expansion pack when it comes out. I am sure that will be the M.O. for a lot of players that have a few hundred hours into the game already. Enigmatics
That's the relative post I've read.
Pandora's box
I've only seen crappy purple items from the new chests yet. Of course I'm not buying tons of keys. Even gold items I find on monsters go 99% straight to the merchant. It would be interesting if the drops were with fixed suffixes and prefixes, but random items for so much gold...
Batou of Nine
Lol. The very first chest i opened gave me a gold staff. Hale Fire Staff of Fortitude, Max dmg mods werent too shabby +4en and +27 hp...
