Pacifism questions

I was wondering if pacifism wouldn't work on someone if they were already suffering from a duration over time spell. I guess it wouldn't make sense for it to work, but I wanted to know anyways since maybe the damage only gets checked when they first get hit by the spell or something along that nature.
