Changing Secondaries and the New Skill System
Plague
Lately I've been wanting to change my Warrior from a Monk secondary to a Necro secondary. I at first considered simply deleting the character and starting anew, but I wanted to keep my silver-dyed Platemail armor, and apparently even if you name a new character the same name as the original, that armor will not work on your new character.
Subsequently, the only way I can change secondaries is to have this done in the Crystal Desert. Buying all the skills I otherwise would have gotten through quests would have been simple enough until the SF update, but now that my skills are capped out at 1k a piece, this is hardly feasible. Even if the skills started at their original price, the amount of money it would eventually run into (and the massive amount of skill points I would need) would be tremendous.
Is there any way around this problem, or is there anything I'm not aware of that I would find beneficial? I've never changed my secondary before, so I found it possible.

Not sure, but what's this about being able to change your secondary profession?
Can you actually do that? How?
And by the way, not matter what secondary profession you use you only use 3-4 of it's skills and 4-5 skills of your main prefession. So just buy the ones you know for sure you're going to need.

You can change your second profession in the crystal desert. There are NPC's in the areas Heroes' Audience and Seeker's Passage that allow you change it once you have completed their quest.
To the original poster:
Sadly enough there is no way around it. I also feel that 1k is quite a steep price per skill but I guess we'll have to live with that for now atleast. You dont want necro as a secondary for PvE warrior anyways. Keep monk and do some farming, that way if you decide to change to a necro you will have enough gold for the skills you will require.
If you go smite as secondary attribte line as W/Mo, you can quite easily take down hordes of mobs in a short time. Try going solo into some areas, gain enough adrenaline to throw us balthazar's aura and symbol of wrath and watch the drop like flies. In quite a few places I can make about 5p in like 30 minutes easily.

My primary reason for changing over was so that I could cover all professions with three characters. Mo/R, E/Me and W/N
I currently have a N/E that I'm refusing to part with. I suppose after I UAS then I won't have to worry about using the characters.
~edit: And my reason for changingmy characters was that I got sick of looking for groups as anything besides a Nuker, a Tank or a Healer. That's all anyone wants, and I got fed up with it. So, holy trinity for me.

You may want to also note that if you do switch your secondary, you'll have to do another quest to switch back. In your case, it will naturally be Monk's Path. And just so you know, that quest can be beyond annoying.
anignna
No you do not have to do another quest to switch back. After switching if you want to switch back just go to the guy that you switched from and he will give you back your origina secondary. No need for quest.

How do W/M manage to have enough energy to use Monk spells (or any other spells come to that)? 2-3 spells and you're out of juice, and at only 2 pips regen it takes an age to make back enough to cast more spells, especially energy hogs like Balthazars.

I thought quests with skill rewards activated when you change secondaries so that you can simply go do them and get your new skills.
Is that not true? I've never tried changing..

Hmm.. well I guess that's something, but it seems kinda pointless not to simply turn them all back on (minus pre-searing, of course).
Guess they really wanted to get a bunch of gold out of the system ASAP

Actually, it makes perfect sense why they don't reactivate all the quests when you change your secondary. Think of it like this, the quest giver is your mom, the quest is to clean your room, the reward is ice-cream, the profession change is you putting on a new shirt.
Mom: go clean your room and i'll give you ice-cream
You: ok Mom, room is clean, can I have my ice-cream now
You: *eats ice-cream*
You: puts on a new shirt
You: Mom, if I go clean my room again, can I have more ice-cream.
sorry, nope

yes, but it still works.. npc's are easily conned into thinking your room is in need of cleaning up again
But.. are you willing to take your lvl20 char into Old Ascalon and deal with lvl3-7 creatures for a few skills?

Hey Plague, the only think I can recommend is have a spare 5k and only buy the skills you plan to use in your skills bar. When there was cheaper skills people would buy up massive amount of skills and not really read them or take notice of what they could do in combination with their current skills, then you hit a slump between Yak’s and the desert and things can get a little boring.
It's one of those fixes that works for some and not for others. :/

if you were trying to unlock those skills before the update you would be paying like 3k per skill at the end. i know some people unlocking all skills with one char. they had to pay more than 10k per skill. a 1k cap is a godsend.
shady_knife
go back to ascalon and do all the class specific quests, what i did. there are a fair few lying round.

There is also one more thing to think about. In the old system buying skills from the trainers made the price go up albeit slowly, the new one just raises faster. I switched secondary classes, and with the few skill quests actually remaining, you will end up at 1k per skill in no time, that is if you must have all of any given profession's skills (like me). Otherwise just bite the bullet, do your homework, and buy just the ones you will need

This really blows if you don't want to go through the entire game again
Arvydas
Old Ascalon, Sardelac Sanitarium, Serenity Temple. These places should have quests leftover for your secondary. Yak's may have some too...
Gigashadow
If you switch secondaries, and then switch back to your original secondary again, do you have to re-purchase all the original skills, or did they stay with your character in a hidden state?
Arvydas
they stay with you, as far as I know.
Kamatsu
All skills you have been giving stays with a character, even if unusable. Say your a E/Mo and play through and get all the monk skills but then decide to change to a E/R. You can then go through and learn all those Ranger skills that you want.. and then decide to switch mack to monk.. you'll have all your Monk skills that you had before.
You never forget skills that you have aquired. when you change secondaries they just become unusable untill you switch back to that secondary. Also if your secondary was Ranger, you would not loose your pet if you swapedc - you wouldn't be able to use it as your not a Ranger at the time, but if/when you swap back to Ranger secondary your pet will be the same name, level, evolution, type, etc that it was before.

So, how many skills will have to be bought with a prof switch? 5? 20? 30? The skill point aspect is what I'm concerned about.

Well it really depends on what you're after in changing, doesn't it?
If you're a 'completionist' driven by the nead to UAS for all professions no matter the cost, then I would imagine the answer would be "all of them"; lots of skill points and plats needed.
If, on the other hand, you just want to switch things up for a little variety, then I would imagine the answer would be "as many as you like"; figure out which skills you want to use from your new profession and ignore the rest. Maximum 8 skill points & 8 plat required.
The trainer at Ember Light Camp sells every non-elite skill in the game now, so it's ridiculously easy to spend a couple of minutes browsing through the skills and deciding what's worth picking up.
Herd
This will help you figure out which quests will become available upon switching secondaries.
