Buying Gold
Slade xTekno
I just started college and found that I cannot play as often as I would like. I plan to buy gold off eBay, but I'd like to know if anyone else has done it before, who they bought from, and how it turned out.
How do they transfer the funds to you? What is the max gold you can have on your person? Your Storage?

Max gold is 100 Platinum per character and 1000 platinum in the storage I believe.
Bingley Joe
You better try to get as much play time in as possible before ANet closes your account.
dargon
As Bingley said, if they catch you, ANet will shut you down. All they have to do now is flag your character, which you've conviently given them the name of in your profile here, and should you sudden come into a huge sum of money without an equivelent item (ie sup vigor / absorption) leaving your character, they've got all the proof they need. Buy gold from eBay is only supporting the the bots. You don't need gold outside of what you earn doing the missions so why worry about it.
SnowCrash
I have a funny feeling that Anet is more concerned about people selling items on eBay than gold. Someone selling a few high end items for over $100US is more of an issue than some guy who buys it. Attack the sellers, not the buyers.
cagan
anet is quite content to attack both ends of the stick. Both partys are breaking the EULA after all.
SnowCrash
yea...but what's worse, they guy spending the money on items or the guy profiting from it? I agree with you, but I think Anet should choose the worse of both evils first

Oh please you guys...
First off, banning your account because 'someone gave you' lots of money and you had no equivalent item? LMFAO. For all they know ebayers could have helped them level or know them in real life to acquire the gold.
Secondly, I honestly doubt they can use a forum name with the character name on here in banning you. Just because he 'plans to' doesn't mean he will. He never put a screenshot of his 'winning item' on the forum and put, "MY CHARACTERS NAME IS X!"
You guys are a bunch of drama queens. Get real.

and for the record, it violates no agreement.
its actually technically illigal to sell in-game items, since the item is a product of arena nets hosting, and thus arena net servers, and since its illigal to sell what belongs to someone else, they can not legally sell gold and or items to you.
HOWEVER, as anyone whos studied law to any degree knows, the #1 rule of law is wording, wording, wording. websites that sell this crap and people who sell it bypass consumer protection laws by saying they are not selling you for the property of company A B or C, but they are charging you for the time they spend in game giving you the materials.
ah, the wonders of law...
that having been said, arena net holds the right to close your account for ANY reason, they could close your account because your character had the letter "q" in his name if they so wished. however, they can not legally shut down the people selling items, bar from shutting down thier accounts, but they dont do that. why? because in order to hold the amount of gold/items that they need to sell to people they need to buy extra activation codes to buy new accounts, which just happen to be sold at full retail price.

Its not really being a drama queen, its emphasising the risk he would be taking.
It wouldn't be hard for Anet to track large transactions, and we know that they do, it can be worked out who ebay sellers are after enough transactions, and then, banning then, followed by everyone the seller gave large amounts of money too would be a fairly simple process.
It IS against the EULA, and you CAN be banned for it, its that simple.
To be playing, you agreed to the EULA at some point, whether you read it or not isn't Anets problem
From the EULA
"(Section: 7. OFFICIAL SERVICE)
You may not sell or auction any Guild Wars accounts, characters, items, coin or copyrighted material." <- Buyers are guilty by being involved in the auction.

selling sites bypass it by saying they sell the time they spend on the game, not the item itself.
but they, again, have a right to ban anyone, for any reason. almsot all games have this clause.
in diablo 2, for example, they outright banned 375,000 accounts at one point, to cut down on botting, and noon could do a thing about it, even though close to 1/4th the accounts probably never botted.
example, this is an actual disclaimer taken form ebay from an auction for 300k guild wars gold:
"Disclaimer
All characters, items and Gold in "Guild Wars" are the property of NCsoft. This auction is not for the ownership of intellectual property owned NCsoft but for the time and effort spent in providing this gaming service, all items are and will remain the property of NCsoft. By bidding on this auction you are stating that you are in no way affiliated with NCsoft. "Guild Wars" is a trademark of NCsoft. All registered names and trademarks are perperties of their respective owners. "
furthermore, the agreement you posted states nothing of buyers;
"you may not sell or auction..." that is targeted at sellers, not buyers.
cagan
Reason for previous post.
Your other points of course, are quite valid and reasonable.

The thing is that their is no way that ANET can know how you acquired the money. It could be that a friend gave you 100plat (possible) or any other number of things. Their is no way to prove that you paid cash for gold unless they link your ebay account to your GW account and the Sellers ebay accout to his/her GW account. If they cant do that and ban you then it is not right.
EternalTempest
If you get caught, Anet will ban your account. I advise against it. It hurts the ingame ecconomy and will get people to really hate you. You tend to get the ebay fine, ebay the devil.
With the changes from the latest patch, just about everything you need will not be hard to get if you do the game normally.

Well the seller can just tell you to buy the time he spent getting the gold, and he can give you the gold for free... the wonders of wording :P.
Not that I agree with buying gold off eBaa. It just promotes bots and its a waste of money.

Dont buy any gold. Its stupid, spending more money on a game that you already payed for.
