Help a noob
TimberOwl
Hi guys, new to GW. I couldn't believe my eyes when i first started. Such a good looking game. After about 4 hours playing, doing quests, i got to level 5.
But im starting to wonder what all these R5/Mo things mean, at the moment im R5? I guess that means "Ranger Level 5" But what are all the other mo thing supposed to mean?
Im also wondering, what i have to do to get these new areas and how im supposed to get game updates? Does the game download these for me when i log in?
Just a few questions, thanks for your time.

New myself.
The R5 is indeed Ranger level 5, the Mo bit means they are also a Monk on their secondary profession.

Kamatsu
the /Mo means that person has taken Monk as their secondary profession.
In Guild Wars you don't just play 1 profession at a time, you get to be 2 profeccion's at once! Albiet with some conditions. These being:
- you can only wear armor of your primary profession
- you can only use runes of your primary profession
- you only get access to your primary profession's "primary" attribute.
So when you see someone being a W/Mo or E/Mo or N/R what that is showing you what their Primary/ and /Secondary profession is. Thus a W/Mo has Warrior as their primary profession and Monk as their secondary profession. This W/Mo can only ever equip Warrior armors - they can never use Monk armor's. They can only use Runes which are designated Warrior Runes. They have access to the Warrior's "Strength" attribute, as thats the Warrior's primary attribute, but can't put any points intoi "Divine Favor" as that is a Monk's primary attribute.
to get a secondary profession you need to talk to certain NPC's in the game which offer you quest's which give you skills of a certain profession, and if you complete that quest you have the chance of making your secondary as that profession.
An example is "A Mesmer's Burden" - you get this quest from Lady Althea just outside Ascalon City. If you complete the quest and talk to Lady Althea again she will offer to make your secondary profession as a Mesmer. There are other trainer NPC's - Mhenlo for Monk, Master Ranger Nente for Ranger (which is your primary, so doesn't count for you), Mistress Munne for Necromancer, Elementalist Azure for Elementalist & ... for Warrior (he's the warrior standing by Balthazar's Statue.. can't rememebr his name, sorry).
---
The game will download any major client updates whenever they are available before you can log into the game. The game will also download any updated files for new area's when you access them - this is what they mean by "streaming" technology. You only ever download updated files for what you need and access - anything else never gets downloaded till you go to those area's.

Thanks guys, most useful. Good to have you guys around here to sort us noobs out.
Edit:
I have one more thing to ask. I did a mission in ascalon which sent me to the ruined ascalon 2 years later... This is a stupid question but can i ever go back to the old and better ascalon? I still had stuff to do. Or do i ahev to reset my account to complete all the stuff there?
If i do reset the account, do you think monk is a good proffession to take? And will i still be able to use the same name from my new character?

There is no going back...
I guess if you want to go back and do all the stuff, you have to delete that character or just start a new one. Overall any profession has it's plus sides and negative sides. The main thing is learning how to use our chosen profession properly, that is utilising different skill sets to suit your chosen attributes.
Personally, I am a Ranger so am a little biased...("stick with the ranger....!").
You will only be able to use the same name if you delete the existing character (I think - correct me if I'm wrong!).
Any more questions, just ask.
Gomezie
Yeh i would most definately go back and start again.. DO not do that mission yet.. its nice to run around in tele tubby land for a while
TimberOwl
Yeh, i asked a guy in ascalon city and he said no i can't go back, i figured that its just the next part of the game. But i hadn't finished the first bit yet. Damnit.
Anyway, yeh i am going to stick with Ranger, but im still thinking about what other prof i should use. I had monk before but im wanting to use elementalist, i think the powers that you get with R/E are cool. What are your thoughts on this.
I think its best to delete the account to start a-fresh. + I can correct some mistakes i made before, i just love the scenery of pre-searing ascalon.
A few more questions (I'll be an expert in no time)
1) Can you capture the black bear as a pet? (Green Hills country)......if so, then what other creatures are good for pets that i can capture?
2) Is there anyway to increase my storage space?

In answer to your questions, you cannot capture the bears in pre-searing. You have to wait until further on in the game, post-searing.
Also, in terms of storage for your characters inventory, you can pick up a belt puch and a bag which both hold 5 items each pre-searing, then you can get another bag post-searing. Also post-searing you can by runes of holding which allow you to increase storage in your inverntory BAGS (not belt pouch) by an extra amount.
I would say an ele is quite a good secondary to use. Basically try them all out pre-searing and see what you get on with.

Mr. Matt
1) No, you can't capture a bear in Green Hills County or anywhere else in 'old and better' Ascalon. There is a place you can capture a bear later on in the game, but it ain't an easy place to get to by yourself.
2) Yes. Right outside the gates of Ascalon City (the pretty beginners one) there is a collector who will give you a belt pouch in exchange for five skale fins. This gives you five extra slots. In 'new and crappy' Ascalon you can purchase two bags, which give you five extra slots each. Both of these bags can be upgraded with Runes of Holding to give ten items each.
Also, while you are in the starting area, a tip regarding experience: you can level up very quickly without doing any missions whatsoever. Just kill critters until you get to level 5 or 6 (you can go up to level 8 or 9 just by killing critters if you have the patience (or higher still if you move on to the Charr afterwards), but I wouldn't bother doing that if I were you) and then start doing quests -- you will emerge from the Academy with a higher level with little extra effort. And more money, too.
In addition, you know those quests that let you try out each profession before you choose your secondary profession once and for all? Don't just do one of them and accept the new profession. Do ALL of them -- at 250 experience points a pop they're worth it. Only choose your secondary profession after doing them all.
And good luck!

and dont forget, if you DO want to remake your character....
do it as soon as you deleat them, or you risk loosing your characters name.
we already had someone who left their character deleated overnight and lost the name, becuase the game only holds a name for a few hours for you, so remake them streight away, even if all you do is log them back into pre searing.

...and "Legolas Deathblade" is definitely NOT a good choice for an original name

OK, thanks guys. So the animal that i get with the ranger quest is the only one i can use pre-searing.
aismailuk, i got the belt pouch from the skale fin guy. But you said i can get a bag in pre-searing? Where can i get that?
What secondary proffession would you guys say is the best to use with ranger? Just a thought?
Also, where is the best place to level up in pre-searing?
Right, so i think im sorted now, thanks for the help.

and, no, the animal you get (the meladru's stalker) is not the only critter that you get pre searing.
talk to the guy next to master ranger nente called the animal trainer or some similar name, and you can dump your cat.
then you can have some of the other animals.
theres the Moa Bird things in Lakeside
Boars in the area you do the 'over the wall' quest-and you dont have to go too far to get them, just stay away from the high areas and dont go near the charr unless your with someone thats at least level 9
you can also charm wolves, who mostly hang out in wizards folly...the ones in lakeside arent friendly i dont think.
you cant charm the bears, the rabbit or the spiders in the catacombs.
you can get bears in post searing, and spiders in the underworld, i hear.
also white looking winter wolves in the shiverpeaks.
and theres lynx's in the maguma and kryta areas.

Whoops! My mistake!
And for your info, you are able to get rid of your current pet pre-searing. Can't think where he is off the top of my head though...hang on a sec...
Try Regent Valley - look for Master Ranger Nente. He should be the one you are after (although please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on this)

There are Wolves in Lakeside (near the Abbey) and in Wizard's Folly (several parts). All Wolves in Pre-Searing are hostile, but that doesn't make any difference.
There are Striders in Lakeside (there are a few in the village). Just so you don't go on a fool's errand looking for animals called Moa Birds, they are called Striders in Pre-Searing. There's no real difference, they will become Moa Birds as you level up.
There are more Stalkers (if you decide you want one after all) by the fountain you initially found yours at. They will still be there even after you have completed the quest.
There are Boars in Lakeside, if you are willing to look often. They are near the entrance to the Northlands, by the large bull in the pond (see: Mesmer quest), not very far from the gates to Ascalon City. You may have to check more than once, as sometimes there aren't any for some reason. Failing that, there are Boars in the Northlands (the 'Across the Wall' quest takes you there). Just look out for Charr while you're over there. They don't like you very much.
After Searing, FYI, there is a pet abductor standing not far from the entrance to Ascalon City. So if you want to change your pet again in the 'new and crappy' Ascalon, that's where you go.
Mr Jazzy
no, you can create characters with different names.

yeah, boars arent too hard to tame, i helped a ranger get one with my pre sear stayer char Lunitari.
he called it Destroyah....not sure if its a good name for a boar or not....BaconMaker would have been more my choice ^^ or PorkChop....since i cant fit PorkChopExpress....^^ lol.
yes, you can name your pet, too. i cant remember offhand if its /namepet<porkchop> or something else, though.
my necro ranger called her stalker Mica...after her Werelopard boyfreind ^^ if she could have more than one pet...a pair of cats and a pair of wolves would be super...
(Mica and Nathaniel and Jason and Richard, probably ^^ hehe..all her fave Furry people)

/namepet or /petname both works
Once you name your pet, the name stays with it, even if you tame another. you can rename it with that command, but you can never reset it to default (well you can name it Boar but it's not treated as "default")

Monk is a difficult class to play. And you will undoubtedly be the blunt of many many personal attacks. very Warrior from Ascalon to the Fire Islands is going to call you a noob and yell obsenities at you....That being said, playing a monk will make you a far better player at a much faster rate. You'll have direct experience with Energy management(in PvE the Monk is the only class that has to worry about energy management...the rest of the classes can just stop casting while they regen and nobody will notice)...and it'll open your eyes to what other classes are capable of doing. Fair Warning you will spend the majority of your time in-game looking at HP Bars.

Yeh, i got a boar for my pet after going to tamer to get rid of cat. Boar is great, level 5 now, kicks ass. Nice little dude, i think i will try and re-mame him.

Thanks guys
(btw, i chose Ranger and Elementalist..... Fireball attack is great!) I just need better healing.

Patience is the key!
Don't worry about your healing at such a low level, as you progress and put more points to specific attributes, different skills will become more effective (e.g: more in expertise = better quicker healing on Troll's Unguent).
And yes, William is the correct spelling!

Just a little fyi on deleting a char and keeping the name...
According to the manual it is reserved for you for up to 60 minutes, then you are s.o.l.

Btw, if i take the animal charm spell away from my skills rack, my little friend disapears? I didn't realise that, or is that not supposed to happen?
aismailuk
Yeah, you have to have charm animal equipped for your furry/feathery/scaly buddy to hang around!
Don't worry though, you won't have lost your pet, once you re-equip charm animal they will return the same.

"There's no going back."
"I'm willing to leave everything behind."
Besides, Anet gives you 4 characters why don't you start another character instead of deleting this guy?
You're learning. Good. I wish more players we're willing to learn like you.

Haha, im a good learner, and im also mature for my age, forgive my ignorance, but alot of players aren't. Just with any game.
I did realise that that mission was different, but i thought it was just a long one, not that i actually went to a whole different area, but i know that now.
Ive already deleted the account, did it awhile ago, and im already well on my way to Post-Searing, just going to get to level 10.

Dude, the enemies in Post Searing are only lvl 3. As long as you have a primary and a secondary, all skills available in pre searing and lvl 6, you are good to go.
By lvl 10 you should be somewhere in the ShiverPeaks headed towards Lion's Arch..

True, but some people like to explore everything and then move on when they are ready.
Everyone has a different style of play. I remember when I first got the game, I didn't want to miss anything in pre-sear, so I carried on until about level9.
Basically, you're not playing to a set timeline. If you are enjoying an area, spend more time in it, if you are not enjoying, try to move on as quick as possible.
At the end of the day, this game is about fun and enjoyment, so make sure you enjoy it!

Come on by lvl 7 what haven't you explored in Pre searing. What more are you going to find in Presearing at lvl 10 than you couldn't find by lvl 7?
What more is there to enjoy?

Whoah, easy tiger!
I was merely saying that everyone takes different amounts of time to go through different areas.
Each to their own. I got to level 9 before I moved on. Not intentionally aiming for that level, just decided that at that point, I wanted to move to the next part of the game.

Haha, why does everybody i talk to want to complete this game as quickly as possible? I can see why people become aggressive and addicted.
Im playing this game because i enjoy it, if more people did that then there wouldn't be so many problems in the games industry.
