I've been curious about this for a little while, and wondered if anyone else has similar experiences to me on the issue of salvaging items with two mods. Conventional wisdom is that you have a 60% chance of salvaging a mod on such a weapon, and this 60% is split evenly between the two mods; however, it has been my experience, and that of a few others that I've mentioned this to, that certain mods *seem* to be preferentially favoured when salvaged. Specifically, I note that this seems to be the case with both bowstrings and staff wraps, but it could just be a statistical anomaly or whatever. So, I'd like to know if there is any definite knowledge about this one way or another, or if this is something that might be worth testing.
Thanks in advance,
Rico

Salvage Odds - Are they actually equal?

So here's the way I look at it. As far as I can tell there is about a 1/3 chance each for mod 1, mod 2 or materials. If there is only one mod, then it seems to be 2/3 for the mod and 1/3 for the materials. The problem here is that you need a really large sample size (on the order of 1000 attempts) to begin to get an actual idea of what the percentages are, and even then you'd only be accurate to about 3 percentage points either way.
The key things to remember are simple though:
1) No matter what your personal experiences are, they are not enough to assume one way or another. Say you've salvaged 12 gold bows today, got materials 11 times and the string once. Mathematically that tells you basically nothing, except that today you are having some crappy luck. Don't go telling people that they shouldn't salvage bows anymore (which I've seen some people do).
2) It makes no sense for the developers not to make the chances of getting the first upgrade and the chances of getting the second upgrade equal. Easier to code, no real benefit either way. (This says nothing about the chances of getting materials, which could obviously vary.)
In other words, I say stick with 1/3 for the first upgrade, 1/3 for the second upgrade, and 1/3 for those damn wood planks (until the devs tell us otherwise).

If you want to salvage wood from every perfect bow and steel from every perfect sword, give it to me, I always salvage the material and not the mod (at least it feels this way)
