How does Armor Work?

I would like to know how the numbers related to armor effect the damage. Is a shield different from body armor? What do the numbers mean?

I was told that absorption runes only apply to the body part, is this true?

shield only counts for attacks u take from infront of you

absorption rune is universal wich means 1 rune covers youre whole armour

No. You need only one rune of absorption.
