if i leave the beastmastery attribute at 0, will i still be able to tame animals? or will the higher lvl animals be off limits to me?

I don't know. I've heard that the higher the BM attribute, the easier it is to tame animals.
I tamed a level 2 wolf with only a few levels of BM. I tried to tame a bear but failed, however I've heard that other people, with higher BM can tame bears.
With the way attribute points work in GW it makes it easy to just take all your points out of other attributes, put them in BM, tame the animal and then change them back again. Refund points build up so quickly that this is truly a viable option.

At level 2 with 0 in beast I tamed the level 5 quest cat on my first try. On all 3 rangers I've made. I don't think it matters.

If I remember right, the bears have a knockdown attack that probably interupts charm, so you probably just have to keep trying till you get it. Actually if you use the skill from max range you could prob tame it before it even gets to you.

The bears used a speacial interrupt skill, from a distance to interrupt me when I tried to tame them. It wasn't any sort of physical attack.
