Dreaded disconnection problem
Pelias
Firstly, I'm not on my own computer and I don't have spellchecker here. Please bear with me.
My perfect solution for game disconnections is genouely simple:
Leave player where he was. He won't gain any exp, fame, mission completion, items, gold, etc. Let him stay there and get killed by monsters/other players. When player log onto his character again, he'll simply join the game(if it's still in progress).
That solves all the disconnection, dsl reset, PC freeze problems we are all having (my ISP like sto disconnect me ~10 times a day, isn't it cool?). You just log in minute later and rejoin with your PvP/PvE party. You'll probably score death, but who cares? You can still help your guildmates or continue that mission.
Thing is - I don't see any issues here. What are the obvious flaws, why isn't it already implemented?

What if you're disconnected for say an hour?
Pelias
If the mission still last, you get back to where you were left. Otherwise, back to nearest town. There isn't anything better that can be done; let's face it - long disconnections aren't A.net or players fault.
johnnylange
I think the best the option is if someone get's disconnected, then replace them with a henchie.
Pelias
I asked: "What are the obvious flaws, why isn't it already implemented?", so do not go offtopic.
johnnylange
I haven't gone off topic and I stated the obvious flaws. If you're disconected for a longtime then there's nothing you can do and they should replace you with a hench. Why hasn't this been implemented? I don't know, you have to ask the GW programers why it hasn't been implemented.
Kai Nui
Yeah, replace with henchmen of the same class and skills. I mean you're not losing anyone really and doppleganger does it.
Como Fort
Yeah but Doppleganer ganks people as well ^^

ArenaNet said in one of the FF interviews that it is a technical nightmare (words to that effect) for such a system to be implemented but never said it was impossible.
I doubt it's high on their priorities since they have so many things to be doing right now.

just about every MUD out there has implemented a "reconnect" feature
and there is no reason why Guild Wars shouldn't have such a thing. This
is, without a doubt, the most bothersome aspect of GW.

Though johnnylange has sullied this thread with his irrelevant off-topic naysaying, I think this post has the best idea for a resolution that is crucial to this game. I'm not sure why this idea isn't in the sticky list, because it adresses "the most important flaw of this game." Pretty much every other suggestion contains things that are conveniences and minor improvements, but nothing compares to how detrimental disconnects are to Guild Wars. This game is supposed to be marketed to the casual gamer who only has a few hours to spend on the game here and there. As such those hours should be well spent in accomplishing something. But as it is now, hours can be wasted with a simple disconnect.
I was 2 hours into the tombs PvE area, when I disconnect just before finishing the hall of heroes. I only had a few hours for recreation that night, which were wasted due to a random disconnect. Sure these don't happen very often, but when you have a team of 8 people on a mission that lasts over 2 hours, it's likely to happen to someone. Yet have the devs even given a thought to how they are disenfranchising those that value their time? How can I convince a proffessional friend to spend 2 hours playing a game that has a chance of crashing and wiping away his efforts?
And now with factions, they want to introduce highly competitive cooperative missions over resources. I hope these will be short missions, because I have no interest in investing much time into a game that will likely drop members and not allow them to reconnect.
In addition to the above suggestion, there are many ways that the devs could allow reconnects, any of which would take away the one thing that can immediately kill all interest in this game.

Just throwing ideas in, no way am I supporting this idea just YET. Would need some more refinement.

I think just letting the leader of the party have the option of replacing the missing party member with a henchie would be more than fair.
Flyte
How about the second you disconnect you are replaced by a henchy of the same class as you? The second you log back on you replace the said henchy.

Is a "Rejoin Mission" option going to be incorporated into the game? The "Rejoin Mission" function is probably one of the most difficult things to program into a game. And yet, we know it’s a popular request with fans, for a variety of reasons. In the long-run, some sort of functionality of this sort will be added to Guild Wars. We'll continue to investigate the possibilities and will weigh the merits and drawbacks in the context of several ideas we have on the table. It seems nearly certain that we will incorporate this option in the long term, although we can't provide a timeline right now. |

A few of my guild mates are having problems with the game, and strangely only during Guild Battles. We have one person whose screen goes completely black, another white, and a third who is simply dropped from the game. And in all cases, they solve the problem by simply closing the game and starting it back up, in a matter of maybe thirty seconds. It's rediculous how many battles we have lost because of it.

Thanks for the quote Loviator
At least they're aware of the concern, but I wish they had a little more concern and focus over the problem. Maybe it's one of the most difficult things to program into a game, but it's the most -important- function to any multiplayer game. Who wants to play a game with their friends when if someone crashes or drops for some reason, they can't rejoin?! I would trade every improvement, every fix, from release until now for the ability to rejoin.

I'm thinking another reason is, if this was miscoded, you could leave a mission go to town and come back with new items\skills\ect.

This could be way to easy to exploit.. especially in PvP... don't plan on it happening any time soond..
I funny understand the LEGITIMITE want for something like this, but there is really no way to control others from abusing it...
I useto want the same thing, but as I started to think more and more about how it could be exploited I figured out it was too eazy to exploit in PvP and PvE for that matter.

I don't think a henchie replacing you is a good suggestion. Imagine some of the perfect interrupts the enemy get on you in PvE happening all the time in PvP when the other teams mesmer drops out...
