Are they better, as in dealing more damage, or is it just a sort of status symbol?
Or for example, will a +30hp grip make me fight better then a +29hp grip?
question concerning gold & purple weapons

no not at all
I cant see it being a status symbol either.. if anyone said to me "HEY LOOK AT MY WEAPON ISNT IT NEATO!?"
I'd be like "uh, sure"

I dont Consider It a status Symbol at all, but u could call it what u want. If a player has a vary nice or Elite item, I like to see it. I have a couple of staffs that im proud of.
In this game people are 60% into looks. So if your going to tell me that when people Pay over a mill K for a item, that there not proud to be the owner of that rare item and want to show it off a bit, Then your lying to yourself. Thats y chaos Axes r so popular its kinda a "status Symbol" if thats what want to call it. Personly I like the more less commonly Used weapons. I may open a thread here called My Elite weapon. Where people can show of there Gems.

More collector's item then?
Some prices i heard are just outrageous, +1000K for a 'perfect weapon', while a 1k weapon could possibly do the same.
It's not about the game anymore.

jeah.. i have for my self a colector staff with this mods:
hale firestaff of fortitude.
energy+10.
fire dmg: 11-22.
improve skill casting speed usig fire magic skills (chance 20%).
improve skill recharge using fire magic skills (chance 20%).
heath +28.
heath +28.
damage +20 (customized).
so the thing is: i have a sup. fire rune so i have a -75 hp penaly making me week. there for i have a sup vigor that give me 50hp now this staff giving me 54hp.
thats a total of 50+54-75=29hp. thats means that i now have 511 hp in total on my charecter.
the point is: the extra 3 points of life can probably safe my life or just keep me alive long enougth to get healed. so for me its not a status question but a question about survavivel (or however it is spelled)

no offense meant, but 50 + 28 + 28 - 75 = 31hp, which indeed helps with survival
Collectors stuff is perfect and cheap, and therefore just as good as gold versions of the same thing. But if you have completed all the missions, quests, w/e and you have money to spend, you may aswell use it to buy something a little different.

The path of a GW player:
1. Using a weapon that has the highest base damage you can find.
2. Using whatever gold/purple/collectors items you find regardless of looks and wondering my people spend 100K+ on an item.
3. Spending 100K+ on an item because you want to look cool.

in the rpg version gold weps gives more of a chance for better damage mods.
white give no damage mods( unless quest item)
purple gives up to 12%<50
gold can give a full 15%<50 ( using over 50 as examples, there are differnet damage mods.)

beside the point, if you have a heap of gold why not flaunt it a bit? if you can replace your 12>50 longsword with a 15%>50 why wouldnt you? ... and the collectors are req 9 ... what if your using a build that you can only have 7 in it for some horrid reason
