Algren Cole
most the other secondaries don't make much sense for the ranger. Ranger/Warrior is probably never going to work. You put a sword in someones hand and all of a sudden they think they can tank. you'll find yourself being the monks worst nightmare. Elementalist spells cost too much mana for you to ever really use effectively. Necromancers sacrafice life for almost every skill which you can't really afford to do as a ranger since it's your job(after the tank) to make sure the casters aren't being targetted. The Ranger is pretty much the jack of all trades and can function without a secondary for the most part. You might want to think about going Monk secondary so you can heal yourself and have a reuseable ressurect skill(for pve)...or Mesmer might be nice for interupt/shutdown combo.

I find the most useful secondaries are monk for self heal and decent res and mesmer for an awesome shutdown ranger.

depends on what you want to do as a ranger. Since you're starting out I'd spend my points in marksmanship & expertise. Always keep expertise as high as you can without sacrificing your other attributes. Expertise is easily the best primary attribute in the game. It helps the ranger maintain energy management by cutting the mana price of your skills for every point in expertise...which you will learn to love later in the game if you run a trapper or quickshot build. Then you need to decide whether you're going to be a marksman or a beastmaster(don't try to be both) then later in the game you can rebuild as a trapper if you'd like. If you choose to go the route of Interupt/Shutdown I wouldn't bother putting anything into marksmanship as the amount of damage you are doing isn't important.

I did R/N, mainly because the bone midgets tend to be a bit more effective than pets, and they die off instead of ruining your pulling..... I still have my pet though, and will eventually level him up high. Its just for the storyline, I'm not gonna have him around.

Though I have personally have just started on making a ranger, I couldn't agree with Algren Cole anymore.
My R/El is only lvl 10 and I can already tell that I must have made a bad choice with choosing my secondary as I never use ANY of the skills. As Algren said, I too am also, for now, just throwing points into makrsmanship and expertise.
I know, at least I am pretty sure as of now, when I lvl up to 20 I am just going to be using all ranger skills, and prolly change to a R/Mo instead of R/El so I can, as said before have a res other than a sig.
Man those were run-ons.

A Ranger Ele is more of a choice for a changed profession than one to start with. My guildie was a Ranger Mesmer through the entire game, and then changed to a Ranger Ele after I informed him about a Fire Spiker build I had thought up for him.
He seemed to like the damage he could run.
