(Excuse me if wrong, but I think it was helping the priest mission, where you need to protect him while at the same time going out and gathering 4 crystals from 4 nearby enemy armies.)

I'm pretty proud of this one.

I started this with henchies only just to see what it was all about, and found out when I got to this part that I was supposed to split my group to both protect the priest and get the crystals one at a time. Well, you can't split your group when you have henchies only, but I tried it and completed the quest anyway.

Did it with a lot of running back and forth - halfway to the enemy, then back to protect the priest from wanderers, then back to aggro part of the enemy, then back again to protect the priest again while at the same time killing the aggro'ed enemy that followed. Then back to get the crystal. Did this 4 times! Lot of work, my char died twice but got resurrected by the henchies who kept on fighting in my absence.

So, anyway, it can be done

Hencheman AI improved THAT much that they learned to retreat without humans and without paniking?

That mission is easy with henches.

I posted this earlier:

"The enemies that attack the High Priest spawn when 1) you attack the mobs guarding the crystal, and 2) when you pick up the crystal. Fire your bow at the mob, run back to the priest; go back and kill of the crystal-mob, pick it up, run back to the priest."

I don't know if what Numa wrote is correct exactly. If I remember right (its been a week, I was on vacation) I ran back to the priest when only little over half way to the first crystal mob to find him about to be under attack. So I don't know if the mobs are timed or triggered or maybe a bit of both.

And it was longer and tedious! I almost gave up on the last crystal because I lost bearings and ran into a wall! Got pinned in and killed, but that was one of the times that my henchies were strong enough to continue without me.

No, Ollj, henchies don't retreat from you. They stick around and (at least from my experiences) fight to the death. At some point before the end of the battle you can get resurrected. This happened to me with the ROF mission with only henchies. One time only Aiden and one enemy was alive and I thought I would have to do the mission all over again. But Aiden stopped fighting momentarilly and resurrected me so that I could help finish off the one enemy. I had rebirth (Me/Mo) as my only Monk skill, so I could wake the rest of the party up and continue.

This is a common misnomer. Henchmen can and will retreat. As you are running away from mobs target yourself and call target on yourself, henchmen will disengage and follow you. There you go.

While I didn't do it with henchies, I could easily due to bug Priest ran to us from his camping location and just stood there, not moving at all, while enemies we're continually spawning where he was supposed to be Only happened once, dunno why - I had 2 other people with me, but full henchie team could do it as well .
