[MERGED] How to: Make a good PUG or Find a Good Group

As far as PvE goes, I've had the best of luck with groups who talked the most to each other. Seriously.

It took me six tries to beat Ring of Fire (oh, I know), and with the sixth team, everyone talked to each other. We had a monk who was getting drunk (and the drunker she got offline, the better she healed. XD), a ranger who kept chattering at us like a ten-year-old girl on speed, a few sarcastic elementalists, and several rangers and warriors who lol'd and commented a few times.

The best groups I have been in are the ones where everyone has fun- and I don't mean best as in "touchy-feely" best, I mean the ones who operate best.

It's also the same in PvP, from my short excursions into random arena (Tatyana von Zarovic, if you've seen her). I think my favorite groups have been one with a prot monk who talked a lot and laughed and acted like a regular person, and another where we ended up in a 69-minute match versus a warrior who brought only running skills. -_- By the end of the time, I had two new additions to my friends list, and I also have been chatting with them when I recognize them in opposing teams.

So seriously, guys, talk to your group members. Talk to them about anything, other than things that are obviously TMI. And if you play random arena, talk to people if you remember them, please. You'd be surprised at how well groups work together after you spend some time socializing.

Yeah, I agree there are quite a lot of errors and some personal opinions in the original post which sound sort of like the way the game should be played... Sure, the way the poster describes might work very well, but be careful, completely marking some skills in a game useless most likely means you are incorrent.

Back to the topic.
I usually do not consider people to be bad according to what skills they use and how long they have played. As long as the people are friendly, I am happy with the currently group. I do not mind getting beaten by players/monsters, as long as everyone tries to have fun and do not curse and blame each other for aggroing the wrong mob or skills they use when we got beaten. Therefore, I agree with the talking method...
Try to communicate with people before the pve/pvp starts. In most cases, it's not hard to tell if a player is friendly. Sometimes, putting: "Looking for friendly and nice teammates only." might work pretty well. Even the same person can act differently(nice or mean) in the same team and same situation. People who send a request would try to be nicer hearing the requirement of entering this group. After all, I think the reason why a party with guild members seems better in most cases is that they are closer therefore more friendly to you. My method is just to try and make players feel warm towards the group.

Sometimes, "A group of friendly, helpful people looking for a monk." might work very well, since everyone would want to be treated nicely in a group(I guess).

I have to agree with Dumeka:
"What I care is respectfull, nice and helpfull teammates by my side no matter in PvE or PvP cause these people are the true blessing for me."

Nothing in this game is hard enough (and or worth it) to force you to lower oneself and invite an arrogant rank XXX pvp god instead of clueless but interesting newb. (in PvE ...)

As for mending: this skill is great if you play with incompetent or unorganised people and/or if you are very lazy - for everything serious, its a joke. You cant be sure that the 2 monks you invited are any good, so you take mending just in case. If you bother to ask for the monks skills, kill mending and take something good.

Mending is good for pve, how often will u get hit by an Ub3r attack. mending is good over time, and combined with breeze is great. Mending is shit for pvp

Lol - rank truly is meaningless, when you can gain rank simply by being an IWAY warrior (or previously, just a warrior to be smitten off of) and gain fame constantly. It doesn't take much to get the occasional point of fame, and bad players frequently flock to the FoTMs and rack up fame that way.

Is there a correlation between rank and good play? Most probably. Are there exceptions to that tendency? Most definitely.

Gee, I guess I need to throw away my gold max dmg 15>50 +29 health double adren on hit (10%) firey dragon sword and equip that stupid blue fellblade I picked up somewhere. If it's a firey dragon sword, it must be crap, right?

Oh, and my +34 health gold eternal shield, I guess that's crap too. Maybe I'll get 100gp from a merchant. Oh, my ranger's gold storm bow I just got yesterday in a UW run - must be just as worthless. Sniff.

I guess I'll go and change my secondary profession too, that rebirth spell I'm carrying (the only monk skill on my bar) must mean I suck hardcore.

I LOVE people that toss around generalizations like confetti at new year's eve.

Oh, and rank is a meaningless way to judge a player's capabilities - just like judging someone because they have a firey dragon sword, or FOW armor. Judging someone on appearance is silly and arrogant.

[QUOTE=Navaros]the thing is, most IWAY parties are easy-as-pie for any semi-decent party to counter. therefore i highly doubt that IWAY builds are as successful at farming fame as they are perceived

unfortunately, IWAY is a very successful way to farm fame. I PuG'd with a guild group that told me one of their guildies went from 30 fame to rank 6 in a weekend playing orders necro for IWAY.

You get some R6+ W/R's that spam "R6 W/R lfg (not target caller)". How do you think they got their rank!

IWAY can easily run in and win maybe first 4 maps as ana average, that's 10 fame. And they can just keep repeating it for about 50-60 fame a day.

I thought you couldn't mod the fiery mod on a fiery dragon sword?

My tactic is to get people to whisper their class and build and outright refuse blind invites (even if it is a monk!)
Once you get a semi full party (4 out of 8) you then start a dialogue of what other type of characters would go well in the group and start being a little more selective.
Then have a finally recap of group roles when party is formed, this is will help iron out impatient people who are all "GOGOGOGOGO" or the aggro manics and make everyone aware of their role.

Heck the last FoW group I had only one monk and 3 necros, an elementalist, a ranger and 2 warriors (I was one of the warriors).

... I have a firey dragon sword. I'd like to use the flameberg I have more.. but currently, the dragon sword has the better mods on it. Soo... my warrior runs around with the sword that is hated by all except the people in the lower areas, who seem to enjoy having them... Does that make me a bad warrior? I dunno, I seem to have a problem with dying.

And, from memory, you can mod the pomel, but not the hilt of the fiery dragon sword.

What's wong with paladins plz... do not stereotype. I as a paladin know my role and realize I can't do it alone thats why I'm in a group to begin with. whats wrong with mending. Its a very useful skill if done right.

Same here. I have lots of swords, but the FDS is the one with the best mods. I don't do PvP with my warrior (I am not the most experienced tank player, I have to admit), but I don't get why a FDS would be bad choice for PvE. I can see that it's crap against rangers due to their high resistance against elemental damage, but it's great against other tanks, IMHO. And we were talking PvE here, not PvP.

What is wrong with typing in all caps when looking for a group? It makes you stand out. E/Me LFG is easier to see than e/me lfg. Especially in a busy district, you may not even see the lowercase one. And I'm half blind (not really half blind but its not so good) so its easier to read so I dont have to squint.

"E/ME LFG EXP: 1.21 MIL. NO NOOBS"

Actually, sometimes typing in lowercase letters makes you stand out..

What's so bad out typing in ALL CAPS LANGUAGE...

... well, just read it here: http://www.onlinenetiquette.com/courtesy1.html

Talking in ALL CAPS LANGUAGE is the #1 bad thing listed there, along with reasons why it's bad.

If you're doing it because of some visual impairment, that's of course a very valid excuse. In that case I'd recommend typing in "normal letters" (if possible) if you're looking for a group and explain to them later why you have to switch to ALL CAPS. This way, all members of your group can do it. Unexplained, a lot of people will assume that you are either rude or immature, since they can't know that you're the only person among the 1,000 ALL CAPS typists who actually has a good reason to do so.

But I'm just talking about looking for a group. Once I'm in the group I no longer type in caps (on purpose).
