Any way to know one's pet evolution if it's already been renamed?
Someone posted it's possible to do this by counting pixels. Is there an easier alternative?

The only way to know what evolution they are on is to count pixels
Seriously though, you need to find a monster that you know will do x damage to someone with x armor (say 10 damage vs someone with 80 armor and your pet is level 20...) and then watch how much your pets bar moves while the creature is attacking it.. this way you can estimate how many hits it will take to kill your pet... which tells you approx how much hp your pet has... which will tell you it's evolution path.
It tells you because each evolution path changes the hp (except Elder, which is +/- 0 health).. so if your pet is level 20 and would take ~540 damage to die you know your pet is on Hearty evolution (-3 damage (or is it -6? I can't remember), +60 health).. whereas if it would die with ~450 health it's on Dire evolution (+1? damage, -30 health).
so basically to answer your question - no, the only way to know what evolution your pet is on if you have renamed it is to look at pixels and calculate it's health based on what it's loosing per hit on it..

Well I used a variation of the pixel counting by using comfort animal and proportion and it appears I have an Elder Stalker
I actually thought it was a hearty because it was bigger than the level 5 stalker at old ascalon, then realised that all pets regardless of evolution grow bigger as they level.

My last char, as a joke I got a warthog from over the wall in pre. He is now level 14 and about 2-2.5 phyical size bigger than he was. I renamed him when I got him, so I really dont know the name change.
He was knee high, now is chest high (I have a small Monk char)

Anyway all pets grow as they level up, regardless of evolution. So the physical size of the pet only tells you what level they are...which you already know by looking at the party screen.
To find out what they have evolved into, it's best to wait until level 20 as the differences in amount of life are more pronounced then. Then you do 'pixel counting' to figure out your pet's evolution.
