"WTB sigil" scammers

just ran into a scammer who scams money by saying "WTB sigils". then when people try to sell him a sigil, he puts the money in the trade box in normal gold instead of plat.

ie: if you are going to sell him the sigil for 45k, he would put in 45 gold instead of 45 plat

obviously for those who do every trade slowly, this scam would be very noticeable.

but sometimes you might make a mistake and trade too fast, and click accept by accident, thus giving the scammer a sigil for 45 gold instead of 45 plat

i'm presuming he had some success doing this scam because he was very relentless in spamming "WTB Sigil" even after i told him to stop scamming. then he put me on ignore for telling him to stop scamming.

if someone from Anet reads this post: would Anet do anything if scammers like this were reported? i've reported some other trade scams in the past and i got responses from Anet along the lines of saying that it was unfortunate but they're not gonna do anything about it

if Anet would monitor this guy and his scamming then i'll definitely report him, but if not i don't wanna waste my time making a report

Umm... I don't think ANet can be blamed for people not taking 2 seconds to check the trade window before they click accept. Sure this guy shouldn't be a jerk, but ANet can't be responsible for either his behavior, or someone else's lack of patience.

No. They don't have time to patrol the game for mean people.

Anet is not going to waste their time monitoring a scammer. It's your fault if you get scammed.

well sometimes that's not practical. ie: just now my party needed me. the scammer almost nailed me because i was in a hurry to get back to my waiting party and hence was not as careful as i usually am. yes that is my fault, however that does not excsuse the existance of the scammer.

yes everyone should be more careful when trading, but to be practical, sometimes you can make a mistake and lose out big time due to one dumb mistake. someone might be in a hurry (maybe school is about to start or something just before the trade finishes), or tired, or whatnot. there is a whole host of reasons why a simple mistake like that could be made. it's not simply a matter of stupidity.

scammers should not be given free reign to scam gold in this way. that is morally wrong.

Frankly, I am tired of people making mistakes. They should not be given free reign to ruin our missions and bring our HoH runs to an end. They always use the wrong salvage kit on sup rune armors and forget to bring rez signet. I hope Anet finds a way to grip on those mistakers.

Well, the trade window could give you a warning if you're trading something for less than 10% of its actual value (via traders) -- just to prevent scams like this.

it's traders' responsibility to check their trade before clicking accept.

if I go buy a slice of cheese pizza, I'll make sure I get a slice of cheese pizza, not a roll of napkins.

if I sell my used underwear on eBay, I'll make sure I get US $700 via paypal, not 700 japanese yan before I ship my underwear out to the buyer.

If you want morality, go to church... don't play an online game where there are no consequences for bad behavior. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but that's the reality of the situation. You cannot expect ANet to compensate people for mistakes that they make.

While I can understand and agree that it is morally wrong with trying to scam people, it is your responsibility if it happens in this manner.

You have a submit button in the trade window as well as an accept button. If you are in a hurry and don't take the time to check it out then you should save your trading for later when you will not be in a rush.

Anet is not your mother, nor should you treat them like that. They can't and should not be held responsible for your own mistake. Or perhaps we should just nerf trading all together, that would solve that problem wouldn't it. Play with what you find on your own, I like that concept.

Corrected the trade user interface in order to prevent a scam technique.

Before, it's very easy for an average player to miss the "coma". (ex: 100, if u miss the "coma", it would look like this 100.) NOW, they added 2 boxes that somehow looks like this (____) , (____) so peeps will have a place to put their hudreds or thousands. Im sorry if this isnt cleat to you guys, i'l try to post a lil screenie tom...hehehe...im at work right now!

The change was made so that dropping an item after opening a trade dialogue prompts you for confirmation. I've seen no change in the trade box itself... yet.

As far as him breaking any rules, no the person just has no scruples whatsoever. There's no law against that, just needs to be watched out for.

The Trade window prevents unnoticable item switching, which was a big problem in other games. If you're in too much of a hurry to complete a trade, then you should wait to trade when you have a little more time to give it. Just be careful.

Lastly this post wasn't entirely useless, while I'm usually careful while trading, I didn't realize that people were attempting this type of scam. It's nice to have this thrown out there so people can specifically watch for it.

Side note, anyone that can actually sell their used underwear on ebay for $700.00 (yen or dollars) is someone I look up to, and if I ever need a salesman, I'll definately holler.

This scam has been around for a long time, but you are mistaken. In beta, there was one slot indicating value for trading(now there is the Plat Window and the Gold window), and no one was trading anything of value for more than 2-3plat. In fact, drops were in the range of 1-2 gold.

Get your facts straight.

The 'switch the xx plat to xx gold' scam is the oldest scam in the gam...this is the same scam.
