So, it was my first time to post a message in this forum to try and see how much I could get for a +1 death (20% chance) staff wrap. Some guy was buying it and I told him that I have it if he would give me an offer (since I had no clue how much it goes for).

A few hours later, I get a message from a different guy who must have seen my post and wants to buy the staff wrap. He repeatedly asks me how much I am selling for when I repeatedly said I want an offer. I dont want to scam him by asking too much nor do I want to be scammed for getting too little. Eventually I just started saying what he was saying to me, but instead of saying "how much" (what he would say), I would say "what's your offer?"

Eventually he put me on his ignore list and started bad mouthing me and calling me a retard. Apparently I should have known how much I wanted to sell for but he doesn't have to know what his offer is...

Clearly, this people had tonnes of gold in the game (after he said ask whatever you want and I'll give it) and felt he had the right to be disrespectful to me. So just to play on his words I asked for 250k and he started laughing. So, I can't give a price and I get called retarded, but if I give an unreasonable price (just for the sake of seeking his maximum price to buy) I get laughed at. So how does it actually work out? His IGN is Warlord Gornak. He also felt he had the right to call other people (the guy who I originally messaged regarding the staff wrap) "gay".

well next time if he asks how much, u should tell him "i don't know how much this is worth, so give me a number and we'll go from there". and if he's so disrespectful, you should have put him on ignore list before he did i find these kinda people very annoying and irritating also... sigh...

so yeah, all you hoes out there that think u're the shit because u got a few million gold in your account(s), you can all go f**k yourselves..

We all agree that one's in-game gold has no relationship with their IQ let alone people-skills. Only wisdom and/or a gorgeous wife will fill in those gaps.

EDIT: just to stay on track, I always do some preliminary research here on GWG to gain a price range or guestimate, then take offers from there. If the guy insists on a buy-out price which you're not prepared to give, tell him that you'll get back to him after checking in these forums first. This should take you a few minutes. If he's legit, he'll be happy to wait.

To be honest, I hate it when people say "make an offer" or whatever. As soon as they say that, I normally end the transaction. I generally feel that people who do that are hoping that they can scam someone out of more money than they feel the item is worth by not setting a price. In my mind, if you intend to sell something, you should know how much you want to sell it for.

Now I realise that you don't know what your item is worth, and that's fine, I don't know what it's worth either. But rather than trying to coerce people into giving you higher offers than it should be, why not just say something like "I've set a buyout of X plats, but I will consider lesser amounts as well" or "I'm auctioning it off for the next X period of time (a day or two for the forums, 15 mins or so for ingame), minimum bid is X" something of that effect. At least give your buyers something to go on.

I particularly enjoy the people who waste my time by saying "make an offer" then saying "no thanks" after I make a reasonable one. It really makes my day.

In other words, don't play games, or you'll make people mad.

dunno about the price really but i saw someone searching in the buy forum and willing to pay up to 100k not too long ago

The problem is that I did say to wait a day or so when I DO get a price check on the item so that I get an idea of how much it's worth except he insisted in me just giving him a # and said he doesn't want an auction (specifically). I honestly don't know a minimum or max for this item. It's my first time selling, I would have just said 500gp and would probably have been "scammed" horribly.

I asked for an offer because someone else wanted to buy the item, not because I want to waste their time by saying "no thanks" after. In a sense, I'm trying to get the better deal, obviously.

I was told a couple of days ago someone posted to buy it for 200k actually. At least now I have some idea of the range in value...but still I do not think it's necessary to be disrespectful to people who are ignorant/noncompetent as not everyone can be expected to know everything. =|

I do have to agree with some of the comments above... if the seller only replies "offer" followed by "no thanks," then the buyer is lead to believe that the seller only wants to sell at a rip-off price. My suggestion on a reply as a seller is "I'm hoping to get at least x-amount for this item, though I'm open to suggestions" -- once you know the item's general price. You can haggle further from there.

I tend to be straight-forward and sell at retail/suggested forum prices.

Well, first, if you don't know what it's worth, and are waiting for a price check, don't try to sell it until the price check comes in. That's just common sense. The item isn't going anywhere, and the price isn't going to change much in a few days (unless a new patch is coming), so take the time to do the research yourself first, before you go to market. As soon as you say you're selling it, you should be prepared to sell it that day, or not at all. Your solution of asking for a bid and hoping they offer you something reasonable isn't really any good if you don't have any clue what its worth. You said you would have sold it for 500g; what if you had been offered 10K? That may seem like an awful lot to you, I don't know how much money you have or at what point you are in the game, and you might have taken it, but you're STILL losing out on ~90-95% of the item's value based on what you've seen in these forums. You're getting "scammed" either way (although I wouldn't call this scamming at all), but that's a different argument. My point is, if you don't know what it is worth, find that out BEFORE you sell it, and be prepared to set a price that you will sell the item for. Otherwise, you're either foolishly gambling, or you're trying to "scam" the buyers.

Ignorance is not the problem here; that can be fixed. I've only been trading seriously for a couple weeks now. I don't have much money, and I know I've lost a lot in the past by selling items for a lot less than they are worth. So, since then I've come here often, have spent time buying and selling items around in the towns, and am now pretty confident about trading. If I find something that looks good, but I'm not sure, I always get it price checked, either by my guild, or here at the forums. You don't need to become a savvy trader, necessarily, but asking for a price check isn't very hard. It can take awhile sometimes, but I find that often if it takes awhile, it means either 1) it is on the "Weapon Mod Baseline Pricing" sticky (top of the forum) 2) it is something that should be pretty easy to run in a search or 3) it is worthless.

That's a great suggestion Lord Shar, I think I would try that next time.

I was waiting for a price check, Rico, the person said they just want a #. No auction, no PC, no bidding...he was giving ME the terms instead =|

Where were you asking for a price check?

As I said, if the person asked for a price, that would seem to imply that you were offering to sell it. For instance, if you say

"Price check on item X"
and he says
"How much do you want for X"
then he's an idiot.

But if you say
"Selling item X"
and he says
"How much do you want for X"
and you say
"I'm waiting for a price check. Make an offer."
Then you're an idiot.

Rico, the time he messaged me he was basically making me sell an item that I only was starting to consider selling to another person (who seemed to need it so I thought since I'm just holding onto it for now I could just sell it to someone who could make better use of it) in the forum and so I asked him to make an offer. So I didn't even know who this other rude fellow was was to begin with. When he started asking me to sell and the other guy hasn't responded to my "what's your offer?" message yet I started posting PC at LA and in this forum but he kept insisting NOT to get a PC and just give him a #.

Wilheim, I didn't want to sell it to him considering how rude he was so in the end I just kept saying I didn't know how much I would sell for and he snapped and put me on his ignore list while he started to flame me =(

Thanks Akhilleus, I think I would ask you next time if I need the PC.

Your story still doesn't make sense to me. Either you're selling the item or you aren't. If a particular person is giving you a hard time, throw them on the ignore list and move on. If you are indicating publicly that you are interested in selling the item, it is only fair to your buyers that you have a reasonable expectation for what you think it is worth. Really, not only is it a reasonable expectation for your buyers, it is a reasonable expectation for yourself. You say that you didn't want to get ripped off, and yet, everything you did in your transactions with BOTH buyers indicate that is what would most likely have happened. Do the price check first, then ONCE YOU GET IT, try to sell the item. Otherwise you're ripping yourself off. You're also being more courteous to your buyers.

Yeah, that's sad Caldebog. I feel your pain...just having to talk to him =(

He's rude...and his way of trying not to be seen as a rude player is by saying "I don't want to sound rude", and continous to be rude anyway...*sigh*
