Hi all.

Out here in the backwoods of New Zealand the only alternative to a dial-up connection over 30-year-old 'phone lines that can barely manage 2kps downhill with the wind behind them is satellite.

Until the end of August I was with a NZ ISP that provided satellite services which worked well with Guild Wars, but they've just been taken over by an Australian outfit that provides satellite via a proxy server called Tellique.

And you can't connect with Guild Wars through a proxy server. GW tech. support told me so and my new ISP doesn't care.

Before I could log-on to the game today I had first to download 8.5 MB of updates. It took 1 hour 10 minutes before I could even go to a location, with another 10 minutes to load files for my location. Chat is virtually impossible over a connection this slow. Loading major updates is out of the question.

So unless I can find a way around this poxy proxy it's the end of Guild Wars for me.

Someone's recommended using a program called Sockscap32, but this is way too technical for me.

Can anyone help?

Cheers.

KeeWee,

Do you have a link with more information about the nature of Tellique's network and service there? I am wondering if it might be possible to bypass their proxy. Be aware that doing so will most likely be a violation of their terms of service.

Alternately, you might want to look into buying sat service from a company located in another country. All you would need is a means to place the order (perhaps a relative) and get the equipment sent to you. Then as long as you have a clear view of the sky for that sat (probably towards the equator), you should be in good shape. I have heard of people in the US doing similar things with Canadian service providers.

H guys.

This is what GW Tech Support told me:

"Unfortunately Guild Wars does not support proxy server connections. In order to connect to the Guild Wars servers you will need a normal Internet connection such as broadband or dial up.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused.

Please feel free to contact the support team again if you encounter any other problems.

Kind regards,
GM Rithen"

Yeah, well. Kind'a fatal problem, ain't it.

The actual software is "TELLINET Client Proxy 2.4.2a". There's a help page with it which is probably comprehensible to a professional network manager but it's all gobbledegook to me. The firm responsible for it is www.tellitec.be, but I gather the ISP has to pay a licence fee for it, so getting access to the technical stuff is 'commercially sensitive"!

One of the great things about New Zealand is that it is a long way from anywhere else, but that can also be a pain in the butt on occasions like this. Before this year Ihug was a NZ ISP and the only one providing a satellite service here, and we the users of the service were sold like cattle to Bordernet in Australia, so Bordernet is now the only satellite provider in NZ. It might be worth looking to see if there in another Australian server as I guess I could access their satellite, but then I'd need a contract with a separate NZ ISP in order to tunnel through them to Aus.

And it really, really should not be necessary, surely?

Cheers
