Well if you want to deal good damage and be a ranger then you could be a warrior/ranger or ranger/warrior. I am a warrior/ranger and love it. I am strong, have a pet, and I can heal myself a little. Warriors best close-combat of course and rangers attack from far away so you have a little of both. I personally don't really like the ranger's bow attacks so I dont waste skill points on them. Hope I helped you some.

eh that's not really what i'm looking for thank you though

Ranger/Monk
You can go for a pet built and heal your pet, basicly use it as a tanker, while nuking monsters etc..
or
a healing built, so you deal ranged damage and heal partymembers/self
or
higher damage by using the Judge's inside skill to deal holy damage and +20% penetration to your attacks, works very well with barrage.
Ranger/Elementalist
Conjure an element to your attacks to deal higher damage, or use some magical attacks to trap monsters.
Pure ranger
Just go Ranger profession only, it has a lot of versitallity in it's skills.

I am (low level so far, relatively) Ranger/Elemantalist, I ditched my pet
I decided i needed the skill slots, so i gave up beast mastery and i am now marksmanship/expertise with a little wilderness survival. I am going fire elementalist mainly for the AoE.

Beast mastery can also be used for tiger's fury only lovely skill that makes your attack speed go up by 33% for a certain amount of time (the time depending on how many points you have in beastmastery)
Willowisp
I'm playing Ranger, love them. I'm gonna go pure ranger, go for full marksmanship and wilderness survival, and place rest of the points in expertise, deal very nice damage.
Pets are unresponsive and in some situations, don't attack your targets right away, or get stuck behind objects, so decided to rely fully on my bow.

Willowisp I'd put more in Expertise and Marksmanship and then Wilderniss survival if I were you, because Expertise makes the skills cost less.. which is heaven, but you can always use refund points to try out both ways of course.

I'll be honest with you. I had a R/Me build in beta but swore I'd go R/Mo when the game came out. I love to do damage, and wish I had stayed R/Me as they can really dish it out.

I am only lvl 8 but I enjoy my ranger/mes combo. I have been putting points into exper/mark/wild sur/and illus magic. I havent looked at what to have scores at yet but I am pretty sure i am gonna build him as 11exp/9 illus/8 mark/8 wild sur. That doesnt count mask bonus which i can vary and runes. I have been doing every quest i can run across and picking up skills that way. Most of the time i run solo or with a healer henchman only. I havent had any problems yet.

Ranger/Mesmer for teh win!
