So You Think Those Chest Keys Are Worthless?

You may actually be right. But I wanted to test it anyway. I started with 200 Shiverpeak Keys...of which I have used 100 for this test(I will run another later but 200 chest runs would be far too many for a single night). Below you can find the results of my test. I have seperated the results into sections to make it a bit more evident the quality of the drops...

The Chests:

I used two chests for this. It appeared as though after repeated runs the chests would stop spawning and I found that using two chests made it possible to switch between two locations to keep the chests popping up.

The Purple Drops:

This is not all the purples that dropped. It is a compilation of all the purple drops that I deemed as being worth posting. There were a number of drops that dropped with no modifiers at all...and a few that dropped with absolute junk that wasn't even worth 100gold.

These are all the Gold Drops. I felt that even if the Golds weren't worth the time cropping and putting onto a single backdrop...you should atleast see the quality of some of the crap that comes out of these chests.

I personally believe that out of 100 runs I SHOULD have gotten more Superior Rune drops...but such is life...These are them.

The Unlocks:

This will be important for anyone interested in PvP. I have a good number of the items/upgrades already unlocked. This is simply a screenshot of what I unlocked in my 100 chest run. It's a pretty decent number of unlocks considering the rarity of what I have left to unlock.

These are the items that I still have in my inventory that I believe I could get more from personal sale than from the merchant. Most of what I got from the chests I sold to the merchant to save time. I'm sure someone with more time could make a bit more gold doing this if they were willing to sell more of the drops on the open market.

The Result and Afterthoughts

While I don't think this is a very good way to make money I don't believe it's intended purpose is a gold sink. I think it's intended purpose was to more quickly unlock weapon upgrades. As you can see I unlocked a pretty decent number of upgrades. However I did finish the test 14Plat short of what I invested...and I don't believe what I have left in my inventory will make up for that loss in investment capital.

100 Key Result


I do plan on completing this test by running 100 more chests...however I won't be doing it for a couple of nights. I will update this thread when I complete that portion.


Note: There were a number of times I spent a key and nothing came out of the chest. It was most certainly the rare occasion...but be aware that it did and most likely will happen to you at some point.

I came to a similar result after 40 keys. same % money loss, dame unlock chances...

I've been getting nothing but vendor trash focuses from chests.

I quit buying keys the day after the update. Out of 3 or 4 dozen chests I've gotten about 4 items worth keeping, or trying to sell. Everything else went to the merchant.

The best chest item I've received was a 29/29 domination staff with a 19% Death Magic recharge. Perfect for my level 9 mesmer/necro.

The first chest I saw get open, sadly not by me, spawned a gold Fellblade. I've been suckered into buying the keys for high end places ever since. I still get a good amount of good items, but the fun of just chest hunting is what gets me. And I've managed to not go bankrupt yet. In fact, I've seem to have increased my total gold with only selling to vendors. Gives me a little side quest when I'm bored
