remove the 1k skills trainer

this idea is ridiculous
1: makes it difficult to get skills for a new character
2: makes it difficult to change professions
i mean you start a new char, and you are like lv5 getting outta pre... HOW ARE YOU GOING TO GET 1k for a skill???????????????, i mean what if you are a w/mo, you dont start with breeze, its gonna be a while before you can scrap up the cash to buy it....

Yea, i dont like it.
Ive just started a new monk charachter (currently lvl 7), Im already up to 350gp per skill.
This means that i HAVE to keep going farming to be able to afford skills.
its fine to have a money sink if you HAVE the money to sink.

Lets see, common arguements
1. You don't need to have every skill on a pve character
2. Come back when you have more $$$ to spend
3. Short term it's more expensive, long term it's way cheaper if you plan to have 1 character with every skill in the game
4. Money is easy to earn later on when mobs drop 90+ gold each

1. It encourages intelligence. You do not need all the skills u have in your class to play. PvE, u do not need all, u need a couple.
2. Money is a weird concept in the game. Just play the game - somehow, the longer u play u eventually still get drops and can make back that cash u need.
3. DO THE QUESTS. If u need the skill badly, do the quests. If u want the short cut, pay for it.
Take it as a challenge - do quests to earn ur skills. its more rewarding (think blood & smoke)

Do not get all skills, just get the ones you want.
Do quests, there are lots of quests that give you skills instead of buying them.
I know it is too much to pay 1k for a skill but unless they change that we gonna have to live with it.
Good thing that I read the article about that update. I spent the weekend before the SF update getting all skills for my mesmer and warrior.
Too bad I was lacking skill points to get them for my Necro.
Now I get what I want only, unless I have money.
But yeah too bad for new players.

heh, right before that update, I spent 11 or so skill points on my ranger for nothing but cap's

Perhaps you don't know what quests are? Complaint Solved.
It's a gold sink, and it's doing its job.
Mr Wolfmaster
You guys are wrong in a way tho. You mentioned quests serveral times yet I've done all the quests with my Mo/N and I have none left! I used them all when I was a Mo/W. So now I'm stuck and I'm not about to spend 18k to get rid of all my skill points. Although if I ever do need necro skills I can just buy 1 or 2 so this doesn't work out so bad. However, exp is utterly pointless after level 20 yet they have all the scrolls and bonus missions. The way I see it if you spend time getting exp for skill points than you shouldn't have to spend a fortune redeeming them.
dargon
Like I said, money is easy to come by. With a 4 henchman party, my ranger can earn roughly 1.5 plat / hour, not including any cash earned from the sale of decent drops such a vigor runes etc
Phrozenflame
For general info..you start @ 50 gp.

Will I mention that I have 421 skills total on one guy and how this update is making an estimate price be cut into a 4th...
yeap only 35,000g left to spend on the last skills.
the milk shake how many times have you made the same statement about Skill prices?
Run the solo monk build like everyone else and sell the crap you find, via merchant or if its even remotely good to people.

2. Changing professions is not something you are forced into, or you have divine right. It is an option and something many games would not allow.

Also, when you change classes, you can still go back and do that class's specific quests for your new type to get some of the skills.
For example, you've just changed your secondary to warrior, good for you, now, go outside ascalon city, and do warmaster grasts quests to get a few skills, then go to piken and do .. um .. i think its pitney at piken, do his quests, then, move on to whoever the next warrior trainer is in the world. This gets you a number of your 'new' class's skills quickly and easily.

I think OP is just wanting to rush and get skills. My Me/Mo is level 16, and she has a ton of skills. Currently at Augury Rock. Her current price for skills if she were to buy? 200g.
Do. The. Quests. For. Skills. Not only do you get skills, you get quite a bit of exp, drops, gold, a chance at items/runes.

I dunnoe about you guys, but let me just ask a simple question - for buy only those necessary skills, how the hell would you know what are the necessary skills are the first time round, unless you've bought them to try before?
Furthermore, what am I to do if I want to experiment with builds? So basically I'm only restricted to skills from quests and probably a dozen other purchases before I run out of options and need to resort to farming if I'm poor? Even doing all the quests before embarking on a skill buying run leaves you with around 6 to 7 skills that hit the 1K mark to purchase - not exactly cheap if you don't farm.

sidepocket13
dumb question, if you unlock skills with faction for a pve char, those are unlocked universally right? not just for pvp??
Detis Zan
=P Um no... You unlock skills/upgrades/runes with faction you gained from PVP and only those things you unlock ARE FOR PVP.
Unlocking stuff IS NOT for the PvE Chracter only for the PvP character simply put.
I think the price is a little too high really.
Everyone says questing. So you mean as you make a new character do the quests and you'll get the skills. Yet if you played the game enough times through I must say it gets boring as hell to do the lame quests/storyline etc.
Even when you change your second profession you can do the quests again but I don't know who would do them again after going through all of that =P
In the end we have to just deal with it. Buy the skills or earn the money yes it's harder for the newer players but things happen.
(I would add something else but this is all of the top of my head)

Besides, it's not that hard to earn money. You can get a fair amount of materials and items to sell just by doing quests and missions. For buying something that stays with you permanently as well as unlocking something for PvP, it's hardly not worth it.
Believe
They made the skills at 1k a peice to push the fact that they want PvE to be a Team Thing. They want you to Complete Quests in order to get your skills instead of just buying them.

So without buying, I had around 100 skills - hardly a restricted skill set. When I tried new builds, I often had most if not all skills needed for it, and buying 1 or 2 skills to finish it didn't kill me.

I'd agree that money comes by relatively easily, but only if you farm/do areas/missions repeatedly though. I can't recall the exact details, but on my 2nd char through with little/no repeats, I was about 12K up by the time I hit Droknar's through the normal route, and skillpts were nearly at 1K. After spending on armor, by the time I hit RoF, I was left with around 5 to 6K to spend, which isn't much when skills cost ~1K and you've got 8 or 9 left, not including cap sigs.
To be perfectly honest, I'm fine with the prices per se, since once you start exploring/farming, experience tends to become the limiting factor rather than gold. But I'd much prefer it if all skills were available via quests - that way, buying a skill should then truly cost something. As it stands now though, having a high price is a flawed punishment since it also affects those who try for all skills negatively.
Chev of Hardass
um, my skills were costing me 1400 gold per skill (and rising) before the update, and I had already unlocked all of the skills for my 2 classes and started a nice collection of other skills.
Now, they cost 1000 gold and are not getting more expensive.
All I can say is, "when you grow up, you will understand."

There is one concept i seriously don't understand in an online game. And that is the community saying with all possible hatred "work for it". What is the problem? This is a fricking game... not some kind of replacement job.
If the way to achieve something is enjoyable... hell yes, it is making fun and you are making progress. But if you actually have to stop playing and start working just to get some skills learned on your character... something is going terribly wrong then. And these words are coming from someone who farms on a regular basis. It is boring. It simply, and downright is, fricking, unbelievable, monotonous, awful b o r i n g. It is something you can do when you just semideactivate your brain and just "flow". But it is no fun and i'm quite sure a lot of players feel the same.
So all you guys sitting here and stating "grow up" or "plan ahead" or "do all quests"... how many of you actually DID those things? The first one i'm quite sure most did not do yet. And yes, i'm speaking about maturity in this case. The second one... well the first time i played through the game there were no guides, no runners, people had no clues about missions and bonus. The builds we had were really terrible with some minor exceptions. But that was allright. Why? Because we could simply buy some other skills and switch.
If a new player now arrives... he gets a million guides thrown at his head and is expected to study them to their last line just to actually have fun playing? Once again, this concept is simply wrong. You should never have to study and plan BEFORE you enter a game. Though at the moment it is this way.
You must do all skillquests. Fine? Think about it. To actually know all skill quests you.. well sure you can just do them. But what about those in places far away from the normal route? Ooops... so you've allready got to look into online guides and have them partly spoil the quests. After you've done that... you play a bit and get bashed and flamed for bringing skill a over skill b. Well, you could change... but what into. Off to the study again. Breaking the game.. studying.. then looking as to which skill to buy.
GEEEZ. That is not fun at all. The way a GAME (for those folks that don't get it... G.A.M.E. and _NOT_ WORK) should be is to allow for an easy way in with lots of possibilities. And if you want to change something about your character, there shouldn't be thousands of barriers inbetween it.
Some folks really should consider coming down from their horse. You're not better than anyone of the new folks, yet you somehow think you'Ve got the right to bash those and force them into studying the game before they play it, so they don't "accidently" hit the skillbarrier.

I think you are forgetting that while the skills cost more moneywise, the XP cost is reduced.
I'm happy with this tradeoff. it still takes more time to get a skillpoint then to get the money.

I'm a new player in GW, about 2 months now.
I think the ratcheting price for purchasing skills is fine as it is and don't mind paying 1k for a skill if I think I can use it. I don't buy all the skills and try to do the skill quests when I can as the skills are worth more than the XP offered in most cases.
If you're starting a new character, then enjoy the journey and do the quests that provide skill rewards. If you don't like the journey or adventure, then why are you playing this game in the first place?
If you are changing your profession in the crystal desert missions, then again, enjoy the journey and take it slow. I have yet to do this option, but will eventually but saving coin for when that happens.
Common MISCONCEPTIONS of success in GW; especially if you read guru too much like me:
1. You have to have Drok armor and a perfect weapon to be successful.
2. You have to have the "perfect" skill set someone else designed to be successful.
3. You have to farm for hours and hours to be successful.
4. You have to be level 20 to be successful.
Here is the truth my friends. To be successful, you have to enjoy the journey. You guys are investing HOURS & HOURS of time playing this silly little game, and if you are not enjoying it, please invest your time in something you do enjoy. I enjoy playing GW for the art, imagination, players I meet that are cool, and the creativity the designers put into it. It isn't a perfect game, but right now I am enjoying the journey.
Flame away all if you disagree.

Then again, I planned ahead and built a farmer. I can get gold for skills, armor, runes, weapons (as if I cared anymore), and anything else that I feel I need.
So in my old age, over 850 hours, I have learned about how to build a character. I am almost ready to rebuild my first character, and fix my mistakes from when I was young.

I don't mind paying once for a skill, but what annoys me, if only slightly, is paying for the same skill on multiple characters.

Same here, I had an idea to aviod that for PvP, but I am starting to feel like PvE characters should have acced to account skills and unlocks, after Ascention (or beating the game, or whatever).
My dust covered suggestion
Perhaps, this is a good idea on that. Maybe not, maybe you can come up with a much better idea.

It still amazes me that people to this day don't realize that doing some of the quests will give you skills for free. If you're gonna be lazy, they're gonna make you pay for the convinience. Why don't you start complaining about having to pay a service fee for gettin cash from a closer ATM than your bank's? Not everything in life will be just handed to you. Get used to it. I'm not saying plan your whole character out ahead of time or do ALL the quests. Just that you can carry 8 skills. Chances are there are only around 20 that you actually use on a normal basis. Just do the quests for those or be careful how you spend the skill points and you won't be out so much gold in the long run. Common sense. All the skills have a description. Read. If you think you're gonna use the skill, get it. If not, don't waste your time till later when you can go back as a much higher level and rock the hell out of the quest. People need to stop throwing their hands in the air and screaming at things that just really are not anywhere near as bad as they are making them out to be. Calm down, relax, and have some fun. It's a game. There's no monthly fee. If it pisses you off that much, turn it off.
Plague
As far as unlocking skills go, PvP is the easiest way to go. Faction is simple to get these days. Unfortunately, unlocking a skill in PvP doesn't make it available for PvE.
If you're a PvE person, you'll be getting all your skills through quests, leaving only a few thousand gold worth of skills, not too bad, especially since it's only PvE.
Unfortunately, if you want to change professions and unlock all of those, you're screwed. Good luck with that.

Quit Highschool and quit your job... right =P
Getting the cash isn't as hard some people make it seem, you can easily sell unid gold items for cheap and what not but just playing the game and all the little crap items on the way.
If you read his post more closely you would see that he said do some the quest that offer the skills you NEED or want to try with. You don't -repeat- DON'T need every necro skill because some of them aren't really needed at all. I have almost every necro skill on my main necro and a lot of the skills I don't even use =P Look up skills you want, and do the quest to get them.. don't want to? Then buy some simple as that.
Don't type when you're mad because you make yourself look pretty bad =P
Trust me I've done all the quest like you.. and now I switched my secondary to monk.. And I haven't even bothered to get some skills simply because I prefer the Necro skills. Only monk skills I have is like..rebirth.
I see your point but you're a little overborad about the money deal =P It's not that hard to grab some cash. I did a run with a friend in SF and got 4 golds and 2 greens. I sold the gold alone for 10k after trying to sell for a 1/2 hour. And it was all unid stuff just cheap crap with high reqs.
Anyway moving on the 1k per skill over after 20 skill points is here. You can make money for the skills, and /or do specific quests (And it's not hard to know what quests has the skills you're looking for.) for your skills.. In honesty I haven't been "screwed" over by the prices at all and I game like crazy.

Don't type when you're mad because you make yourself look pretty bad =P Trust me I've done all the quest like you.. and now I switched my secondary to monk.. |

2. So you are saying things should be better for players with more $$$?
3. That's true, but it'd be much better if the price increment curve were the same as before, with it capping at 1p.
4. Not if you share with 7 other bozos.

If u need the skill badly, do the quests. If u want the short cut, pay for it. Take it as a challenge - do quests to earn ur skills. its more rewarding (think blood & smoke) |
2. Gold is essentially useless, but you really will kick yourself for not having the gold to capitalise on new items when it is cheap and demand isn't that great due to ignorance.
3. Where can I get meteor shower please? From a quest. I do not care about Captain Greywind and his rip off prices.
There you go.

But I hate trying to sell items to other players...Took me like 6 hours to sell this one bow...ugh..I guess I'm just not as lucky as other players...Anyway my apoligize you're right.

Yeah I was pretty lucky but I have yet sell the greens =P
I hate selling as well just takes patience and the right time and place.
Don't get all flustered about other people's posts that's all.
In the end it's just a game we all should enjoy and count the 'blessings' one could say.
Anyway don't sweat it.
