Mo/?, looking for advice on a viable Monk for pvp/pve

Have just started a Monk character after noticing there seems to be less of them than other profs...though I have no idea what to take as a secondary any advice on secondary and/or a good build for pvp and pve (pvp moreso) would be greatly appreciated tried the monk sticky but still feel a bit unsure.

Monk/Mesmer, or a Monk/Ele seems to be pretty popular.

I'm not sure on Monks really, but a guildmate was using Monk / Necro and he delt out some pretty heavy damage around level 9 using a bow.

Something about a lot of buffs and drain spells that made his damage over the top.

You might consider Monk/Ranger as well. Rangers have quite a versatile skillset that can compliment a monks well.
