What armor level are you at? Do you have a Vigor Rune?
Also use a staff with defensive upgrades. I can give you one that has +9 armor. There's things you can do besides level up that will give you a good ammount of protection. If your really having this much problems, then maybe you just shouldnt be trying to do it.
Put all your points into one field, Domination.
Use Empathy, and dont attack.
If he casts backfire on you, wait out the duration before you cast a spell.

To avoid the backfire put on you at the start, take hexbreaker with you, and apply it before you step on the 3rd stone. Then you have hexbreaker from the beginning. If the doppelganger casts backfire on you, this backfire is then wasted. So when you go in, you cast backfire as fast as you can, and keep an eye on your own hexbreaker. Once it disappears, cast hexbreaker on yourself again. If your timing is right, this should protect you from the doppelgangers attempts to backfire you.

It will work, it just takes proper timing. I went in with my level 20 Mesmer and had to do it about 10 times before I got the hexbreaker - backfire - phantasm - hexbreaker combo to finally work. I found that the hexbreaker saved me all the time from the first hex attack, but sometimes I did not get the backfire off in time, or sometimes the doppelganger didn't try using any spells when I had backfire on it. But finally for my last and successful attempt it worked. You need to keep trying. Failing one time doesn't mean the strategy won't work.
Why would you want to ascend at such a low level? You won't level up near 20 with the XP from the Doppelganger reward, and then you will be very low level for the following missions. I don't know about others, but I won't accept a party member in a group for a mission around Droknars that is less than level 20.

Unless they fixed the scrolls affecting the xp, then nvm.
dopple = 50,000 XP
XP times 3 (scrolls)= 150,000 XP
Lvl 20 = 140,000 XP
I used Illusion of weakness as well, I cast it before the battle started (it gave me something like 170 extra HP) then I hit the dopple with some skills, and he used Illusion of weakness when he was already hurt and the life lost from the cost of the skill KILLED HIM. I beat him in less than 10 seconds. DEFINATELY take illusion of weakness.

but yeah, why exactly are you trying to ascend at level 6? you would be useless in fow, uw, and the southern shiverpeaks.
if it's solely for the purpose of being able to say "i was able to ascend at such a low level!," then i would also suggest giving up. because the fact that you need to ask for people's advice takes away from the accomplishment.
don't get me wrong here. i'm not trying to discourage you if you really want to do it. but it should be an accomplishment that you handle all by yourself. asking people how to do it is just making them do the hard work for you. it would then be pointless.

still on a Starter Holy Rod :P
