Ranger's secondary profession? Monks?
Grinler
I am level 9 Ranger/Monk. I am starting to wonder if this was a good choice for a ranger's secondar profession? I rarely use any monk skills except for the bane of smiting thing. I dont use any other skills.
Am I playing this profession wrong? Or were there other professions that I would have been better suited to pick?

R/Mo is great for leveling
You can switch second professions before ascension anyway

Monk is a great secondary profession!
I'm a level 9 Ranger/Monk too and have invested a lot into protective prayers. Shielding Hands is particularly useful when soloing

Interesting...must not be playing it right then. How do you switch second profssions?
Vynn
As far as I'm aware you can only switch 2nd profession once you reach level 20.
In pre-searing you can do missions an temporarily be granted X profession skills, ie talk to Mhenlo for the first time and he will give you temporarily monk skills, talk to the girl at the theater, and she will give you temporary Mesmer skills.
Once you decide and confirm that you want to choose a specific profession it is yours and can't be changed (untill you reach level 20, afaik.)

Am I playing this profession wrong? Or were there other professions that I would have been better suited to pick? There really is no wrong way to play a profession, and there is no "this secondary is better than that secondary". They all have their merits and flaws. This game is very balanced IMO and that is whats great about it. So far the main characters I have played was a Ranger/Pyromancer in the BWE and a Ranger/Warrior now. I love both.

Right now, I'm playing a Ranger/Warrior. Thing is, it's more of a defensive class pick, since you have to wait for them to close into melee range before YOU start carving their arrow filled hides with your shiney sword. But yeah, for ultimate ranged damage, go for Ranger/Elementalist, soloing, Ranger/Monk, and so on. They're all good, one of the things I like about this game.

R/mo with Judge's Insight = OH GOD WHERE DID MY EYE GO?
It's a good combo.
It's a good combo.

i'm a lvl 15 Ranger / Monk
it's an awesome combination... personally... i only use Monk for Smiting Prayers... cause of Judge's Insight... which is an awesome move when used with Ranger skillz

I created a ranger monk and deleted him after 12 levels and 2600 gold. I just wasn't happy with the damage he was doing. I made a ranger me and he does good damage and can stay alive.
I'm going to try and ranger Elementalist with specialty in fire, since you get some innate fire dmg and a lot of the ranger specials are fire based, combined with duel shot I think you can get some good damage out of it.

I think the Ranger fire dmg skills are based on Wilderness Survival, not Ele att.

Yep, that would be obvious as well... because otherwise if you picked anything else you would suck at all those skills...
But i think he means taht it mixes up good ...
Im a R/E... not too unhappy with it, though i still havent got any good elementalist skill exept for firestorm...(im lvl 12)
Im still doubting between lightning and fire elementary...
Lighting is cooler, has armor penetration.
Fire has other skills like firestorm which are totally awesome at high levels.
So im still doubting... but untill then i'll just beef up my Marksman and expertise (dont use the beastmastery and wilderness survival much).

I'm ranger/monk. I've dubbed my build the Smite Ranger, just to poke fun at an old DAOC issue.
I've got 10 smite/10 marksmanship/10 expertise, give or take a point here and there.
My pre-elite skills bar for PvE worked like this:
Penetrating Shot
Throw Dirt
Distracting Shot
Troll's Unguent
Balthazar's Aura
Smite
Judge's Insight
Rebirth
This build works great for my usually henchman-assisted exploits. Lately, I've been hunting elite skills, so I drop Unguent for a capture signet. On the ranger front, I've been playing around with Poison Arrow and Melandru's arrows. I really like Melandru's arrows and have been using it instead of Judge's insight. I only switch back to judge's on purely vs. undead adventures. Picked up marksman's wager, but it just doesn't make any sense to use now that it is elite and you can only have 1 elite.
Typical pull with henches works like this:
Judge's
Pull with penetrating
drop balthazar's aura on tank once he is mobbed
alternate smite and penetrating till mobs dead
If I get stuck in the mix myself, I
throw dirt
drop balthazar's on myself
renew judge's
alternate smite/regular bow shots
Spent an evening PvPing with this build, worked fairly well even with me not having much of a clue yet---hint: I had a great team. I'd balthazar tanks who were in the mix, or flank and balthazar myself next to their monk, throw dirt on the tanks who tried to peel me, then try to keep monk interrupted until he died. Replaced unguent with pin down for PvP. If I have to rely on unguent, I'm gonna die, especially since I have zero wilderness other than from a minor rune.
I've got barrage lust right now, but I'm starting to think it just won't be that important. Sure, it is going to hit multiples if they're bunched, but it won't hit very hard. Lol, if it didn't remove preparations, then I'd go insane. Flank the enemy, pop Melandru's, then start barraging their caster crew. Lots of pain, hehehe.

i am a palidin (warior/mo) and i find him to very powerful and i like him. The smiting prayers work really well will my frenzy. I love being able to kick the crap out stuff and heal myself very easily. Definiately a good choice.

Ranger / Monk I too have this build and am not really seeing how the monk powers are worth the lack of points in my ranger skills. The damage I get from the ranger powers with points in them increases my damage a huge amount. I don't really need healing if I have my points in the correct ranger areas. I am wondering if anyone has any other builds that are working for this combo?
Trueheart
I'm actually playing a Ranger/Monk with full stats in healing, and thus playing a Druid (healer).
Have 42+ Energy at level 16 with non-purple/gold gear, am healing and keep groups alive rather well, and mostly, am just loving the style of it.
I could roll a Monk, sure. But the whole Druid thing is a lot of fun. Armour and a pet if I want him around, and a bunch or regens and solid heals for 150HP+ etc.
Love it!!!

I have a 13 Ranger/Monk and I currently have 7 Expertise, 7 Marskmanship and 5 points I juggle between Healing and Wilderness Survival.
Rangers seem to be self sustained, and I rarely mix between Ranger and Monk skills, because Rangers have so many utility spells, so when there is another healer around I'd much rather load all of those, add Ressurect and I snare, interrupt, and maximize damage with Ignite Arrow and Dual Shot, and a pet.
I can play healer aswell, altho not very well in pvp, I keep healing to pve and missions. Moving those 5 points from Wilderness Survival to Healing Prayers I can heal just as well as a Monk with Healing Breeze, Vigorous Spirit and Orison of Healing, and I also have Dodge and Whirlwind Defense to keep me protected. The only downside to this build is that you can't really do both healing and enchantments at the same time, due to the limited mana pool. (with level 10 crafted armor I have 25 energy).
On that note, I'm wondering, how did you get all that energy Trueheart?

Let's see...
+11 Energy from Druid armour;
+10 Energy Healing Ankh;
+1 Energy when under 50% HP on Wand..
Not sure if there's any others.
Even if it's not the 'correct' build, meh, I dunna care, cos it looks cool and is great fun.
For PvP I do ok too, though sometime switch to all our DPS for that.
