Time to get New HDD?

The SMART value
-on the seek error rate keeps dipping to 100...and back to 200 >_>
-on the power on hours is 89
-the power cycle is 89

To top it all off there is a vacuum cleaner-like noise coming from it.

This is a Western Digital WDC WD400EB-11CPF0 (37 GB, IDE)

Evrerything else isn't overheating:
CPU 23 °C (73 °F)
GPU 41 °C (106 °F)
GPU Ambient 40 °C (104 °F)

I would check to see if it's still under warrenty for replacement, chances are if it's within 1 to 3 years (depends) I would. I would let tech support know it's extremly loud and it's never done it before. If it's not under warrenty, I would consider replacing it.

Now that I think about it, you may not even need to talk to a tech to get an RMA as long as the drive is under warrenty. I would call there tech support to see if the smart values are normal. Some drivers are actually very loud by nature.

Hmmm... I have a 120g Internal Western Digital HDD, and a 120g External Western Digital. On my model of the external, there is no power button (what idiots!), so to turn it off I have to unplug it, and after a while of being on it overheats and has high pitches screeches, but I dont really care, it works. MY Western Digital internal was said to overheat and catch on fire, but so far it is working fine. Chances are its an overheating western digital, or some other problem with THEM, so I would just send it back, they probably get so many send backs each day, they wont even ask you questions lol. But umm, try sending it back to them or look for a replacement.

My internal Maxtor messed up after only 3 years So the replacement I got was a 49.99 $ Western Digital, and MINE has been working fine. (origionally 110 $ without rebates. ) Also, in the box is a slip, and you send in a check for 15$, and they extend its warranty from 1 year to 3. If you are looking for a replacement I would check that out.

the 1 year warranty is only for RETAIL boxes while the OEM drives have 3/5 years depending on model.

since you are replacing it you just reuse the mounting screws and cable.

newegg had a 5 year warranty 250 gig for only 105.95 and a few bucks shipping. (should have gotten 2 of them)

Western Digital has an option where you pay them $20 last time I check to upgrade your warranty to 3 years. But your right 1 years is the industry standard. This is when you purchase your hard drive and there is a card in the package. At least there use to be.
